Chapter 8 - Turnabout

Julian walked to the head of the table. He didn't take an empty seat. He stopped directly behind Marcus Drake, resting his bandaged hands on the leather back of Drake’s executive chair. The sheer physical presence of the younger man made the silver-haired mogul visibly flinch.

“Julian,” Drake managed to stammer, his arrogant smirk struggling to reform. “You can’t just storm a closed board meeting with federal agents. This is a gross violation of corporate protocol! You are currently being investigated for felony assault!”

“Am I?” Julian asked softly.

He glanced at the Deputy Director of the FBI, who stepped forward and tossed a heavy, red-tabbed dossier onto the center of the glass table.

“Marcus Drake, Bianca Rossi,” the Deputy Director stated in a flat, clinical tone. “At 4:00 AM this morning, United States Federal Magistrates signed seventeen arrest warrants for wire fraud, corporate espionage, attempted murder, and the first-degree premeditated murder of Arthur Vance and Clara Vance.”

A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the air out of the boardroom.

“This is absurd!” Bianca shrieked, jumping to her feet, completely forgetting her neck brace and her injured wrist. “Julian is delusional! He’s using his wealth to fabricate charges! Look at me! Look at what he did to me last night!”

“Let’s look at last night, shall we?” Julian murmured.

Julian tapped his tablet. The giant projector screen flickered, instantly replacing Drake’s doctored video with the raw, unedited, ultra-high-definition feed retrieved directly from the server Camille had tried to wipe.

The boardroom watched in absolute, horrified silence as Bianca Rossi, screaming like a rabid animal, swung the heavy oak cane with full force into the shoulder of the recently operated Evelyn Vance, sending her crashing into the banquet table.

Then came the audio:

*“You miserable, meddling parasite! I told you to stay in your room!”*

Then came Chloe running across the floor with the note, and Julian catching the stick mid-air. The entire calculated setup was exposed in excruciating, high-definition reality.

Several board members turned their heads away in pure disgust, glaring at Bianca with open revulsion.

“You sick, twisted bitch,” whispered Arthur Pendelton, the very board member who had seconded Drake’s motion, hurriedly scooting his chair as far away from Bianca as humanly possible.

“That’s only the beginning,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, rhythmic cadence. He gestured to Evelyn.

Evelyn Vance leaned forward in her wheelchair, her voice steady and clear through the room’s microphones. “For three weeks, this woman kept me prisoner in my own home. She withheld my heart medication. She threatened the life of my granddaughter. And last night, with the assistance of my daughter Camille, she administered a lethal dose of digitalis to induce cardiac arrest.”

Evelyn pointed a trembling, accusatory finger directly at Bianca. “You took my husband, Bianca. You took my daughter-in-law. But you will not take my son.”

Bianca’s chest heaved. Her carefully curated facade collapsed entirely. She backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, her eyes darting like a trapped animal’s.

“You have no proof of any of that!” Drake snarled, slamming his fist on the table. “You have a family squabble caught on tape! That doesn't link me to Clara Vance’s accident! It doesn't link me to Arthur’s death! My corporate standing is untouchable!”

Julian smiled. It was a cold, terrifying smile that sent a shiver down Drake’s spine.

Julian reached into his suit jacket and produced the contents of the Blue Box. He laid the titanium flash drive and the original banking manifests directly in front of Drake.

“Three hundred and twenty million dollars routed from Drake Maritime’s subsidiary in Zurich to Camille’s shell companies,” Julian whispered. “Signed by your personal digital signature. And on this drive is the forensic vehicle diagnostic from Clara’s vehicle. It logs the exact time the brake lines were tampered with, alongside the security footage from the charity gala’s valet parking.”

Julian leaned down until his mouth was inches from Drake’s ear.

“Clara knew, Drake. She preserved the evidence before you could silence her. She left the Blue Box for me. And last night, Camille broke under federal interrogation. She didn't just confess to the embezzlement, Drake. She gave up your personal offshore servers, your private safe in the Bahamas, and the audio recordings of you instructing Bianca to finish what she started with my father.”

Drake’s face transformed from pale white to an ashen, sickly gray. His hands began to shake uncontrollably. He looked around the room, but the board members who had once bowed to his influence were now looking at him as if he were a leper.

“Federal agents,” the SDNY Deputy Director barked. “Take them into custody.”
