Chapter 8 - The Midnight Raid on Vance Industries

While Richard Vance sat in maximum security awaiting his court-martial, the fallout from his treasonous enterprise was far from over.
At 02:00 hours the following morning, a convoy of unmarked black tactical SUVs sped through the rain-slicked streets of McLean, Virginia, pulling up in front of the glittering glass tower of Vance Defense Logistics.
General Bradley sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, holding a heavily redacted federal warrant issued under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Beside him in the rear seat sat Elena, wearing tactical fatigues and carrying a specialized Department of Defense decryption drive.
"We have reports that Marcus’s loyalists inside the building are attempting a catastrophic data wipe," Bradley said, checking his service sidearm. "If those servers go offline before we secure the financial ledgers, Richard’s offshore syndicate partners will disappear into the wind."
"They won't get the chance," Elena said, her voice cold and focused. "I know the architecture of the server vault. My mother had the blueprints drawn up before she died. She built an air-gapped backup system that Richard never knew about."
"Move in," Bradley ordered over the radio.
Thirty heavily armed Federal Marshals and CID special agents breached the glass doors of the headquarters, their flashlights cutting through the darkened lobby. The building's private security team, realizing the authority of the federal raid, immediately laid down their weapons and raised their hands.
Elena led the tactical team through the maze of marble hallways, down into the subterranean levels where the company’s primary data center was located.
As they reached the heavy blast doors of the server room, the alarm system was already flashing a harsh, pulsing red.
**SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED: 4 MINUTES REMAINING.**
Through the reinforced observation glass, Elena saw three corporate technicians frantically typing on the master terminals, feeding physical hard drives into an industrial degausser that destroyed magnetic data with powerful electromagnetic pulses.
"Breach the door!" Elena commanded.
A tactical officer placed an explosive breaching charge against the door frame. "Fire in the hole!"
A sharp, controlled detonation blew the heavy lock from the wall. The tactical team flooded the room with weapons raised. "Federal agents! Step away from the terminals! Get on the ground! Now!"
The technicians immediately hit the floor, trembling in terror.
Elena sprinted past them toward the master terminal. The countdown was flashing on the main screen: **62 SECONDS UNTIL COMPLETE WIPE.**
She pulled the titanium decryption drive from her vest and shoved it into the maintenance port beneath the console. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the standard corporate firewalls using a string of alphanumeric codes she had memorized from her mother's personal journals years ago.
"Come on," Elena muttered through gritted teeth. "Come on, Mom."
**AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED: WELCOME, DR. ELEANOR VANCE.**
**PURGE OVERRIDDEN. DATA ARCHIVED TO SECURE DEFENSE CLOUD.**
The red flashing lights instantly turned to a calm, steady green.
General Bradley stepped up beside her, looking at the thousands of unencrypted files populating the screen. "Did we get it?"
Elena scrolled through the directories. Her eyes widened as she realized the true scale of what they had just uncovered.
It wasn't just the Sholur Gorge ambush.
The files contained forty years of illegal transactions: unauthorized weapons sales to sanctioned regimes in the Middle East, sabotaged equipment contracts that had led to the deaths of dozens of other service members across multiple combat zones, and a comprehensive list of high-ranking government officials who had received hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes to keep the Vance empire protected from oversight.
"This isn't just a corporate scandal," Elena whispered, looking at Bradley with a mixture of horror and awe. "This is the entire foundation of their business. They were never defense contractors, General. They were war profiteers masquerading as patriots."

Bradley placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. "And you just cut the head off the snake, Captain."
