Chapter 7 - The Unseen Shadow

Richard Vance stood up from the defense table, ignoring his attorney’s frantic attempts to pull him back down by his jacket.

"You're all hypocrites!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing with manic intensity through the courtroom. "Every single one of you sitting in this room! You wear your medals and you talk about honor, but who do you think builds the weapons you fight with? Who do you think keeps the engines running? Me! Men like me!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Thorne barked, slamming his gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendant!"

Two armed military police officers moved toward Richard, but he gripped the edge of the defense table, leaning forward toward the gallery.

"I built this nation's defense infrastructure!" Richard roared, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "The Department of Defense came to me when their own supply chains failed! They asked me to fix their problems! And when a contract goes bad, when a mission gets complicated, you expect me to take the loss? You expect the Vance family to go bankrupt for a bunch of farm boys from Ohio?"

He pointed directly at Elena, his face contorted into pure, unfiltered hatred. "She was my property! Everything she is, I created! I gave her the education, I gave her the connections, and I gave her the very armor that failed her! If I decided her life was worth more as an insurance payout, that was my right as the head of this family!"

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Spectators stood on their chairs, screaming curses at the defense table. Several combat veterans in the back row had to be physically held back by security personnel as they tried to storm the bar.

The two MPs seized Richard’s arms, twisting them behind his back and forcing him down onto the table. Even with his face mashed against the wood, Richard continued to scream, spitting saliva onto the documents.

"You haven't won anything, Elena! Do you hear me? Even if you lock me away, the company belongs to the shadow syndicates now! They will hunt you down! You will never sleep peacefully again! You will always be looking over your shoulder for what I left behind!"

"Remove the defendant from this courtroom immediately!" Judge Thorne thundered, his face pale with rage. "This preliminary hearing is concluded! The court finds overwhelming probable cause! The defendant will be held without bail pending a general court-martial for capital treason and murder!"

As the MPs dragged Richard through the side security door, his boots kicking violently against the linoleum, Elena finally stood up.

She didn't scream. She didn't cry.

She walked out from behind the prosecution table and strode into the center of the courtroom. She looked at the gallery, meeting the tear-filled eyes of Maria Ramirez, the elderly parents of Sergeant Miller, and the families who had carried the burden of unresolved grief for eighteen long months.

Elena raised her right hand to the brim of her service cap and rendered a slow, perfect, and unbroken hand salute to the families.

Maria Ramirez stood up, holding her infant daughter, and returned the gesture with a tearful nod of gratitude.
