Chapter 5 - A Matriarch’s Desperation

"Arrest her instead!"

The shriek tore from Beatrice Sterling's throat like the cry of a wounded vulture. She lunged forward, pushing past a startled naval aide, her manicured claws reaching for Admiral Vance's lapels.

"Arrest Eleanor! She knew! A wife always knows what her husband is doing! She orchestrated this whole thing to destroy my son because she hated me! She’s jealous of our bloodline! She came from nothing—her father was a broken-down shipyard mechanic!"

Two armed shore patrolmen stepped in, their heavy tactical gloves catching Beatrice’s wrists before she could make contact with the Admiral. They forced her back, holding her arms pinned behind her.

"Mrs. Sterling," Admiral Vance said, not even flinching. "I would advise you to cease speaking before you add assaulting a flag officer to your list of charges."

"My list?" Beatrice screeched, her voice cracking into madness. "I am a civilian! You have no authority over me! I don't answer to the military! Call Senator Davis! Call him right now! He had dinner at my estate last Tuesday! He will have all of your stars stripped by sunrise!"

Agent Cole stepped up, pulling a second sheet of paper from his folder.

"Senator Davis was briefed by the Department of Justice three hours ago, Mrs. Sterling," Cole said coolly. "In fact, he was the one who signed off on the emergency committee approval for the unsealing of the corporate wiretaps."

Beatrice’s face went completely slack. "Wiretaps?"

"Did you really believe your son acted alone?" Cole asked, raising an eyebrow. "Every single authorization for the transfer of fraudulent funds from Sterling Maritime into offshore accounts required a dual signature. Julian’s was the first. The second signature belonged to the primary shareholder and chairman of the board."

Cole held the document in front of Beatrice’s face.

"Your signature, Mrs. Sterling. You authorized thirty-seven separate payments to counterfeit parts distributors in Shenzhen. We have twelve recorded phone conversations of you personally instructing corporate accountants to destroy the material testing logs."

The ballroom erupted. Guests who had spent decades catering to Beatrice Sterling recoiled in absolute horror. Socialites leaned away as if she carried a deadly contagion.

The proud, arrogant matriarch who had spent her life judging the lineage, manners, and pedigree of everyone around her was exposed as nothing more than a common corporate criminal.

"No..." Beatrice stammered, her knees finally giving out completely. She sank to the floor, her lavish satin gown billowing around her like a deflated parachute. "No, Julian told me... Julian said it was just creative accounting... he said everyone in defense contracting did it..."

"Not in my Navy, ma'am," Admiral Vance said with chilling finality.

The provost marshal signaled to two female military police officers waiting near the perimeter. "Take Mrs. Sterling into custody. Hand her over to the federal marshals waiting in the lobby."

As the officers lifted Beatrice from the floor, she looked at me one last time. There was no arrogance left in her eyes. No condescension. Only the raw, pathetic terror of a woman whose entire world had turned to dust in less than fifteen minutes.

"Eleanor..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "Help me. Please. You're family."

I adjusted the gold stripes on my cuffs, looking down at her with the cold detachment of a commander assessing spent ammunition.

"You made it very clear when I walked into this room, Beatrice," I said, "that I don't belong to your family. And you certainly do not belong in mine."

May you like

The officers marched her down the central aisle. The entire assembly of eight hundred guests parted silently, watching the great Beatrice Sterling dragged out in disgrace, her sobs echoing faintly as the grand double doors closed behind her.
