Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Treason

The snap of steel handcuffs echoed through the ballroom with brutal finality.

The two plainclothes NCIS agents twisted Julian’s arms behind his back. The metal ratcheted tight around his wrists. Julian let out a high-pitched, pathetic yelp as the agents forced him down into a semi-kneeling position to pat him down before the horrified eyes of San Diego's elite.

"Eleanor! Eleanor, you can't let them do this to me!" Julian screamed, thrashing against the agents' grip. "I'm your husband! Everything I did was for our estate! You're destroying our family!"

"You destroyed this family the moment you stole my credentials, Julian," I said, refusing to look down at him. "You didn't just betray your wife. You betrayed your country."

Special Agent Marcus Cole of NCIS stepped out from the formation of officers. He was a veteran investigator with twenty years in federal law enforcement, his face weathered and unreadable. He held a tablet in one hand and turned the screen toward Beatrice and Julian.

"Mr. Julian Sterling, as of 1900 hours, your accounts across JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, and Credit Suisse have been frozen under federal seizure orders," Agent Cole announced, his voice carrying effortlessly. "Furthermore, search teams at your residence in Coronado have recovered the unauthorized cryptographic hardware token registered to Captain Whitmore, found inside your private office safe beneath a false bottom."

Beatrice slumped against the edge of a dining table, knocking over a crystal champagne flute. It shattered on the marble, the golden liquid spilling across her designer shoes. "No... no, Arthur built that company from nothing... you can't take our money..."

"Your late husband was an honest contractor, Mrs. Sterling," Admiral Vance interjected, stepping beside Agent Cole. "Your son, however, has run it into financial ruin through reckless derivatives trading and offshore gambling debts in Macau."

A collective gasp went up from the Sterling family's table, where several cousins and board members were seated.

"Gambling debts?" Beatrice whispered, her head whipping toward Julian. "Julian... what is he talking about?"

Julian didn't answer. He buried his face against the carpet, sobbing hysterically.

"Over the last three years," Agent Cole continued relentlessly, "Mr. Sterling accumulated over twelve million dollars in personal debt to overseas syndicates. To satisfy those debts and maintain the facade of corporate profitability, he diverted naval maintenance funds into shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands. When the Defense Logistics Agency began auditing the quality of the ship repairs, he needed a scapegoat. A high-ranking officer whose digital signature could override automated supply-chain safety inspections."

Cole looked at me, a profound look of respect in his eyes.

"He used Captain Whitmore's credentials because her security clearance was high enough to bypass secondary audits without triggering immediate alerts. He calculated that if the fraud was ever discovered, the paper trail would lead directly to her, framing her for gross negligence and corruption while he liquidated the remaining assets and fled the jurisdiction."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

The full, horrifying scope of his malice hit me like a physical blow.

He hadn't just used me. He hadn't just stolen from me.

He had set me up to take the fall. If an engine failed at sea, if a warship lost power during a combat engagement and lives were lost, the digital signatures on the procurement approvals would have borne the name *Captain Eleanor Whitmore*.

I would have spent the rest of my life in the federal penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth, branded a traitor, while he walked away with millions.

I walked over to where Julian was pinned against the floor. The NCIS agents stepped back slightly, giving me room.

"Look at me, Julian," I commanded.

He slowly raised his tear-streaked face. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his aristocratic composure entirely obliterated.

"Was that the plan?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "If the Navy caught on, you were going to let me go to prison?"

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The sheer, suffocating guilt in his eyes was all the confession I needed.

"You coward," I whispered. "You pathetic, cowardly little man."
