Chapter 7 - The Offshore Ghost

Into the suite walked Chloe Vance.

She was alone. She wore a dramatic crimson mermaid-cut gown adorned with thousands of hand-sewn crystals that glittered under the suite’s chandelier. But her face was a canvas of pure, unadulterated misery. Her skin was ashen beneath her heavy makeup, her breathing shallow, her eyes darting nervously around the empty room like a prisoner awaiting execution.

She held an unlit cigarette in her trembling fingers, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor.

Suddenly, she stopped in front of the glass conference table.

Her eyes locked onto the wet bar.

There, sitting beside the tray of untouched crystal glasses, was Arthur Vance’s platinum signet ring.

Elena had placed it there deliberately.

Chloe gasped, a strangled sound catching in her throat. She stumbled backward, clutching her chest, staring at the ring as if it were a venomous viper coiled to strike.

"No..." Chloe whimpered, her voice shaking violently. "No, no, no... that’s not possible..."

She approached the wet bar with hesitant, terrified steps, reaching out a trembling hand. Just as her lacquered fingernails touched the platinum ring, a voice emerged from the shadows behind the drapery.

"It belonged to Dad, Chloe. Just like the watch you stole."

Chloe shrieked, whirling around, stumbling against the edge of the mahogany conference table.

Elena stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, removing her catering hairnet and letting her dark hair fall around her sharp, angular face. Her hazel eyes locked onto her sister with the terrible, cold authority of an avenging angel.

"E-Elena?!" Chloe choked out, her knees visibly trembling, her manicured hands clutching the edge of the glass table to keep from collapsing. "How... how did you get in here?! Security! SECURI—"

"Scream all you want, little sister," Elena said smoothly, taking three slow, measured steps forward. Her voice was terrifyingly calm, devoid of the rage she had displayed on the lawn in Oakridge. "The guards out there think I’m refilling Marcus’s San Pellegrino. And Marcus is downstairs, desperately trying to convince foreign investors that his company isn't bleeding to death."

Chloe backed away, her eyes wild with panic. "You're insane! If Marcus finds you here, he'll kill you! Do you hear me?! He’ll literally have his security throw you out of the window!"

"Marcus won't kill me, Chloe," Elena replied, a cold, mocking smile touching her lips. "Because Marcus is far too busy figuring out how to survive the next two hours."

Elena pulled a folded sheet of paper from her pocket and tossed it onto the glass table between them.

"Look at it, Chloe. Look at what your fiancé has prepared for you."

Chloe hesitated, her eyes darting between Elena’s unwavering stare and the document on the table. Slowly, driven by a morbid, irresistible dread, Chloe reached down and picked up the paper.

It was an international wire transfer manifest and an offshore corporate indemnity agreement, dated three days ago.

"What... what is this?" Chloe stammered, scanning the legal terms.

"That is Marcus’s escape hatch," Elena explained, her voice steady and clinical. "Marcus knows Julian Sterling pulled Apex Capital from the IPO. He knows he cannot pay the twelve million dollars he owes to Sovereign Meridian tonight. So, Marcus set up a private chartered flight departing from Rickenbacker International Airport at 11:00 PM tonight, bound for Dubai."

Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. "Dubai? We... we were supposed to fly to Paris next week for our wedding tasting..."

"You’re not going to Paris, Chloe. And you’re certainly not going to Dubai," Elena said, stepping closer until she stood right across the table. "Look at the signature line on the indemnity agreement, Chloe. Marcus transferred all two hundred and fifty million dollars of Sovereign Meridian’s high-risk mezzanine liability directly into *your* shell corporation: *C.V. Creative Media Holdings*."

Chloe’s eyes widened to dinner plates as she read the fine print.

> *"THE UNDERSIGNED, CHLOE A. VANCE, HEREBY ASSUMES FULL PERSONAL AND UNCONDITIONAL LIABILITY FOR ALL OUTSTANDING OBLIGATIONS INCURRED UNDER THE SOVEREIGN MERIDIAN CREDIT FACILITY..."*

"No..." Chloe gasped, the paper shaking violently in her grip. "No, Marcus wouldn't do this... He loves me! He said we were partners! He said we were building an empire together!"

"You were never his partner, Chloe. You were his human shield," Elena said, her voice dropping into a harsh, unforgiving whisper. "Just like I was four years ago. Marcus used me to sign the initial corporate loans, then manufactured the offshore evidence to send me to prison when the feds started sniffing around. And now, he’s doing the exact same thing to you."

Elena leaned in, her hazel eyes boring into Chloe’s soul.

"When Sovereign Meridian defaults Vance-Kane tonight, Victor Vance’s enforcers won't be looking for Marcus in Dubai. They will be looking for *you*. And when the federal prosecutors issue their warrants tomorrow morning for the missing pension funds, Marcus will be sipping champagne in a non-extradition country, while you sit in my old cell in Marysville."

Chloe dropped the paper. She sank onto the leather conference chair, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs. The glamorous, arrogant billionaire heiress had completely disintegrated, leaving behind the terrified, hollow shell of a girl who had traded her family for fool's gold.

"He lied to me..." Chloe wept hysterically, tears streaking her expensive mascara down her cheeks. "He told me Dad was going to leave everything to you... He told me Dad hated me, that Dad thought I was worthless... Marcus said that if we helped the feds take you down, we would run the company together... that we would finally be respected..."

Elena looked at her weeping sister. There was no joy in the sight, only a profound, hollow tragedy.

"Dad loved you, Chloe," Elena said softly, the words cutting deeper than any blade. "Dad kept a framed picture of you on his desk every single day of his life. He knew you were insecure, he knew you were desperate for approval, and he was trying to protect you from men like Marcus Kane. But you let your vanity blind you. You sold Dad out, you sold me out, and you handed his watch to a sociopath."

Chloe looked up, her face a mask of ruined makeup, snot, and raw despair.

"What do I do, Elena?" Chloe begged, reaching across the table, her trembling hands attempting to grab Elena’s sleeve. "Please... please help me! Marcus will destroy me! What do I do?!"

Elena pulled her arm away with cold, effortless grace.

"You have one chance to save yourself from spending the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary, Chloe."

Chloe nodded frantically, wiping her nose with the back of her diamond-encrusted hand. "Anything! I'll do anything! Just tell me!"

Elena pointed at the gold Patek Philippe watch on Chloe’s left wrist.

"Take off Dad’s watch," Elena commanded. "Take it off, place it on this table, and when you walk down to that ballroom with Marcus tonight... do not say a single word. When the truth hits the screen, you step away from him. If you try to warn him, if you make one single move to help him escape... I swear to you, Chloe, I will let Sovereign Meridian have you."

With shaking, frantic fingers, Chloe unbuckled the worn crocodile strap of the antique Patek Philippe.

She placed the heavy gold timepiece on the glass table, sliding it across to Elena.

Elena picked up the watch. The eighteen-karat gold felt cool against her skin, but as she held it, the weight of her father’s legacy, his love, and his enduring spirit seemed to rush through her veins, warming her soul.

She strapped the watch securely around her own left wrist. The ticking of the perpetual calendar was steady, flawless, and eternal.

"The time has come, Chloe," Elena whispered. "Now let's go downstairs and watch Marcus Kane die."
