Chapter 6 - Into the Lion’s Den

The morning of the Vance-Kane Annual Anniversary Gala arrived under a blanket of heavy, slate-gray clouds that hung low over the Columbus skyline.

In the basement workshop of Evelyn’s home, Daniel Cross had transformed the ping-pong table into an operations center. Spread across the surface were security badges, a floor plan of the Columbus Grand Hotel’s subterranean service tunnels, and three specialized micro-transceivers disguised as catering pins.

Elena stood before a full-length mirror, examining her reflection.

The oversized trench coat and worn denim were gone. In their place, she wore a pristine black banquet server's uniform: tailored black trousers, a crisp white button-down shirt, a black silk vest, and her hair pinned tightly into a severe, professional bun beneath a discreet catering hairnet.

With light makeup designed to subtly alter the contours of her face and non-prescription spectacles framing her eyes, she was invisible. In high-end hospitality, banquet servers were treated as mobile furniture—looked past, never looked at.

"Remember," Daniel said, handing her a miniaturized thumb drive no larger than a postage stamp. "The hotel’s private executive suite is on the fourth floor, Suite 402. That’s where Marcus has set up his temporary holding office for the underwriting contracts and the corporate servers controlling the gala’s digital presentation."

Elena took the drive, slipping it into the inner lining of her vest. "What’s loaded on this?"

"Arthur’s original server logs, the certified copy of the irrevocable trust amendment, and the decrypted Gateway 7 override files," Daniel explained, his fingers tapping rapidly on his keyboard. "The gala’s main presentation is scheduled for 9:30 PM. Marcus plans to broadcast a promotional video celebrating twenty-five years of Vance Logistics, followed by his live keynote address to the remaining private investors."

Elena’s eyes flashed with fierce intelligence. "And if I plug this drive into the master AV terminal in Suite 402?"

"It will deploy an automatic script that hijacks the ballroom’s main fiber-optic feed," Daniel said, a sinister grin spreading across his face. "The moment Marcus hits the remote clicker on stage to play his promotional video... the ballroom’s fifty-foot LED screens won't show his corporate propaganda. They will broadcast his forged signatures, his offshore banking ledgers, and the audio recording of him threatening to send Chloe to prison."

Elena turned toward Evelyn, who was sitting quietly in the corner, holding a small velvet jewelry box.

"Evelyn, are you sure you’re ready for this?" Elena asked softly. "Once the presentation goes live, there will be no turning back. Marcus will be destroyed, but the Vance name will be dragged through the mud of national scandal."

Evelyn opened the velvet box. Inside rested Arthur Vance’s personal signet ring, crafted of heavy platinum and bearing the Vance family crest: a soaring falcon clutching an anchor.

"Your father never cared about the prestige of the name, Elena," Evelyn said, placing the ring into Elena’s palm. "He cared about the honor behind it. Marcus and Chloe turned your father's life work into a criminal enterprise. Tear it down, child. Burn their kingdom to ash, and rebuild it with clean hands."

Elena closed her fingers around the cool platinum ring, slipping it onto her right pinky finger.

"I will," Elena promised.

Two hours later, Elena entered the loading dock of the Columbus Grand Hotel through the subterranean delivery bay. The air smelled of diesel exhaust, industrial dishwashing detergent, and roasting prime rib. Hundreds of staff members were moving in a frantic, coordinated dance—florists carrying towering arrangements of white lilies, sommeliers uncorking cases of vintage champagne, and security guards with earpieces checking delivery manifests.

Elena kept her head down, carrying a crate of polished crystal wine glasses. She swiped a forged magnetic service badge against the employee elevator scanner. The light blinked green, and the elevator doors slid open.

She rode the elevator to the fourth floor, stepping out into a carpeted corridor lined with gold-framed oil paintings.

Suite 402 was at the end of the hall, guarded by two private security contractors wearing black suits and earpieces.

Elena took a deep, steadying breath, feeling the phantom weight of her four years in prison hardening her resolve. She adjusted her tray of wine glasses, pasted a polite, deferential server's smile onto her face, and walked directly toward the guards.

"Excuse me, gentlemen," Elena said, her voice pitched higher, adopting a cheerful Midwestern lilt. "Mr. Kane requested a fresh bottle of San Pellegrino and crystal stemware for his private study before the VIP reception begins."

The larger of the two guards stepped forward, his eyes scanning her up and down with routine suspicion. He reached for his handheld metal detector. "Hold out your arms, please."

Elena raised her arms without hesitation. The magnetic wand swept across her body, buzzing softly over her belt buckle. Daniel had specifically chosen ceramic and plastic components for the thumb drive; it cleared the scanner without a sound.

"Check her badge," the second guard muttered, checking his watch. "Mr. Kane is already in a foul mood today. If we hold up his water, he’ll have our heads."

The first guard swiped her forged catering badge against his mobile reader. The screen flashed: *APPROVED - BANQUET SERVICES LEVEL 2*.

"Go ahead," the guard grunted, stepping aside and unlocking the suite door with a master keycard. "Make it quick. Mr. Kane and his fiancée will be up here in twenty minutes to review the final presentation files."

"Thank you, sir," Elena said with a polite nod.

She stepped inside Suite 402. The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind her, cutting off the noise of the corridor.

The suite was vast, opulent, and suffocatingly quiet. On a massive glass conference table in the center of the room sat Marcus Kane’s corporate terminal: an ultra-secure, custom-built workstation connected directly to the hotel’s high-speed fiber-optic AV backbone.

Elena set her tray of glasses down on the wet bar and moved to the terminal with feline grace.

Her fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard. As Arthur’s former Chief Operating Officer, she knew Marcus’s corporate network protocols better than anyone alive. She bypassed the initial screen lock using an administrative backdoor Arthur had personally integrated into the company's core architecture a decade ago.

The system unlocked.

Displayed on the desktop was the master presentation file: *VANCE_KANE_25TH_ANNIVERSARY_FINAL.MP4*.

Elena pulled the miniaturized thumb drive from her silk vest and slotted it into the terminal’s rear USB-C port.

A black command terminal opened, lines of green code scrolling furiously across the glass monitor:

*INITIALIZING PAYLOAD INJECTION...*

*TARGET: MAIN_BALLROOM_AV_FEED_01*

*STATUS: OVERWRITING MASTER TIMELINE... 34%... 68%...*

Suddenly, the electronic lock on the suite door chirped.

Elena froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The door handle turned.

Elena ripped the thumb drive from the port as the confirmation message flashed—*INJECTION COMPLETE: BROADCAST SCHEDULED FOR 21:30*—and vanished behind the heavy silk draperies framing the panoramic corner window just as the double doors swung open.
