Chapter 3 - The Guardian’s Shield

The heavy oak front doors of Mitchell Manor were thrown wide, and within seconds, the marble foyer was flooded with federal agents in tactical gear, their boots tracking rain and mud across Margaret’s pristine white floors. The flashing red and blue emergency beacons painted the ornate gilded moldings in rhythmic, violent flashes.
Paramedics from the military medical detachment rushed inside, carrying a collapsible titanium stretcher and specialized diagnostic equipment.
“Ethan… the baby…” Olivia sobbed against his chest, her fingernails digging through his uniform into the muscle beneath. She was hyperventilating, her pulse thumping wildly like a trapped bird against his ribs. “Ethan, she gave me… she gave me that tea this morning! Oh God, please, the baby!”
“Stand easy, Livvy, look at me!” Ethan’s voice cut through her spiraling panic, sharp and commanding, yet vibrating with unconditional safety. He cupped her tear-streaked face in both hands, forcing her hazel eyes to meet his. “Look at my eyes. I had our tactical support team swap the delivery van’s supply three weeks ago. The teas you’ve been drinking were organic chamomile and prenatal nutrients. Thorne was feeding her fake reports. Our child is safe. Do you hear me? You and our baby are completely safe.”
Olivia stared at him, the crushing terror that had suffocated her for months suddenly fracturing. A ragged, weeping breath escaped her lips as she collapsed against his shoulder, her tears wetting his insignia. “You knew… you were protecting us the whole time…”
“I was fighting my way back to you every single second,” Ethan whispered, kissing her temple.
Two military paramedics, a male captain and a female sergeant with the 10th Mountain Division Medical Battalion, knelt beside them with utmost reverence.
“Captain Mitchell, sir, let us take her,” the female medic said gently. “We have an advanced mobile care unit outside. We need to monitor fetal heart tones and administer IV fluids immediately. She’s severely dehydrated.”
Ethan didn't let go. He scooped Olivia into his arms effortlessly, rising from the floor as if she weighed nothing at all. He ignored the frantic shouts echoing behind him, where federal agents were already pinning Jason against the grand staircase, reading him his Miranda rights while the boy wailed like an infant.
“ETHAN! DON'T YOU DARE WALK OUT THAT DOOR!” Margaret’s screech tore through the chaos. A female U.S. Marshal was currently restraining her, forcing Margaret’s arms behind her back as cold steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists. “I am your mother! You are a Mitchell! If you ruin me, you ruin our family name! You will be a pariah in this city!”
Ethan stopped at the threshold of the manor. The cold autumn rain misted against his face, but he felt only fire. He slowly turned his head, casting a final glance over his shoulder at the matriarch who had ruled this house with an iron fist of cruelty.
“The Mitchell name was built on honor and service by my father,” Ethan said, his voice carrying over the blare of sirens and the roar of the wind. “You turned it into a crime syndicate and an torture chamber. Tomorrow morning, Margaret, the world will finally see you for what you are: not royalty, but a felon.”
He walked out into the downpour, shielding Olivia with his body and his broad-brimmed patrol jacket as he carried her down the sweeping marble steps.
The medical transport was an armored, climate-controlled mobile intensive care unit. Ethan gently laid Olivia onto the padded examination bed. The female medic immediately placed a fetal Doppler monitor against Olivia’s abdomen.
For ten agonized seconds, the only sound inside the vehicle was the hum of the engine and Ethan’s ragged breath. He held Olivia’s cold hand tightly between his own, his jaw locked, his eyes fixed on the small speaker.
Then, through the static, a sound emerged.
*Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.*
Fast, strong, and unmistakably vibrant. The heartbeat of their unborn daughter.
Olivia let out a choked sob, tears spilling freely across her cheeks, and Ethan finally allowed his head to bow, resting his forehead against her hand, his shoulders shaking with silent, profound relief.
“Fetal heart rate is one hundred and forty-two beats per minute,” the medic announced with a broad, reassuring smile. “Strong, rhythmic, and fully responsive. The baby is an absolute fighter, Captain. Just like her parents.”
“She’s okay…” Olivia wept, her fingers curling around Ethan’s. “Ethan, our little girl is okay…”
“She’s perfect,” Ethan whispered, kissing Olivia’s bruised knuckles. “And she will never spend a single second of her life inside that house.”
Behind them, the medical unit’s heavy rear doors were sealed shut, locking out the flashing lights, the cold rain, and the ruined legacy of Mitchell Manor. As the armored ambulance pulled away, Ethan watched through the reinforced glass window as Margaret Mitchell was pushed into the back of a federal cruiser, her head ducked, her expensive high-society life dissolving into the dark, wet night.
But Ethan knew this was only the first skirmish. Margaret’s corrupt network went deep, stretching through high-end corporate boards, offshore banking havens, and the crooked corridors of Manhattan’s elite legal firms. She had allies who had profited off her illicit empire for decades.
Ethan sat back beside his wife, pulling a secure satellite phone from his tactical pocket. He dialed a direct line to the Pentagon’s Defense Legal Services Agency.

“General Vance,” Ethan said the moment the call connected. “This is Captain Mitchell. The target is in federal custody. Initiate Operation Clean Sweep. Freeze every single asset tied to Mitchell Defense Aerospace, and subpoena every member of the board of directors before sunrise. I want the entire machine dismantled.”
