Chapter 38 - The Crossfire in the Stacks

The basement archives became an echoing kill zone.
Heavy-caliber rounds pulverized centuries-old masonry, filling the damp air with choking clouds of limestone dust and shredded parchment. The high-pitched crack of supersonic rifle fire reverberated off the vaulted ceiling like rolling thunder.
Daniel didn't wait to see who was shooting at whom. He scooped Lily into his arms, using the massive cast-iron card catalog cabinets as temporary cover.
"Ramirez!" Daniel yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. "Who is on the roof?"
"Homeland!" Ramirez shouted back from behind a concrete pillar, returning fire through the blown-out window with three rapid shots from his service pistol. "Miller isn't cleaning up the Trust, Daniel! Miller works for the federal receivership! They don't want the ledger buried—they want to seize it to blackmail the entire state legislature!"
A flashbang detonated at the top of the stairwell, cascading white light and sonic fury down the steps.
Tactical boots pounded down the stairs. Two federal operators in gray combat uniforms entered the vault, their suppressed rifles raised in tight firing position.
Daniel leaned around the end of the iron cabinet, brought up the captured carbine, and fired a controlled burst. The rounds caught the lead operator in the chest plate, staggering him backward. The second operator fired back, the rounds chipping concrete inches from Daniel’s skull.
Ramirez lunged from behind his pillar, catching the second operative in a violent flank, tackling him to the floor and discharging his sidearm point-blank through the man's neck guard.
Ramirez staggered to his feet, blood spattered across his trench coat. He looked at Daniel, his breathing ragged.
"The utility tunnels," Ramirez gasped, pointing toward a heavy iron grate behind the boiler in the back of the room. "They connect to the old municipal steam network. It leads directly beneath the county courthouse. It's the only way out that Miller hasn't cordoned off."
Daniel hesitated, his weapon still aimed directly at Ramirez’s chest. "Why should I trust you?"
Ramirez looked down at Lily. A bitter, broken smile touched his lips.
"Because Rachel made me promise that if the day ever came where the truth got out... I would make sure Lily survived it." Ramirez pulled a ring of brass master keys from his coat and threw them at Daniel’s feet. "Go, Daniel. I’ll hold the stairwell."
From the top of the stairs, the cold, amplified voice of Agent Miller cut through the haze:
*"Detective Ramirez. Step down. The Department of Justice has officially authorized maximum force. Hand over the girl and the archive materials."*
Ramirez picked up a discarded tactical rifle from the floor. He glanced back at Daniel one last time.
"Get to Terminal Four, Daniel. Tell them the truth about my father. Tell them everything."
Ramirez stepped into the open hallway, raising his weapon toward the staircase, firing into the incoming wave of black-clad tactical units.
"Go!" Ramirez screamed.

Daniel jammed the master key into the iron grate, ripped the door open, pulled Lily into the pitch-black steam tunnel, and slammed the steel door shut behind them just as a storm of automatic fire ripped through the archive vault.
