Chapter 15 - The Voice Through the Floorboards

Daniel returned home that night with a cold, vibrating fury. He checked every baseboard, every junction box, every air vent in the house he had spent five years rehabilitating. The hidden cameras found by police years ago had been removed and logged as court evidence, but Daniel had never checked the attic crawlspace above the children’s bedrooms.
While Margaret read Noah a bedtime story downstairs, Daniel climbed the fold-down ladder into the dark, insulated attic. The air was dry and smelled of aged pine and fiberglass.
Armed with an industrial inspection flashlight, he traced the old telephone wires along the joists. Tucked deep beneath a layer of blown insulation near the master chimney stack, he found it: a hardwired auxiliary server, its tiny green LED still blinking faintly in the dark. It had been tapped directly into the home’s main junction box, drawing unmetered power for over half a decade.
It wasn't dead. It was still recording ambient audio through an auxiliary microphone wired into the central heating duct.
Daniel’s blood turned to sulfuric acid. Harold hadn't stopped watching. Even after Daniel regained custody, even after Harold moved across the country, the Chicago IP address had pinged this box three times a week.
Daniel knelt in the fiberglass dust, took out his phone, and plugged the diagnostic cable directly into the auxiliary unit’s maintenance port, using the software Sarah Lin had provided him an hour earlier.
The terminal screen on his phone flickered. A file transfer was in progress.
A high-resolution photograph taken through the kitchen window two days ago was queued for transmission. It showed Lily sitting at the breakfast island, writing in her notebook.
Beside the image file was a text draft, addressed to an offshore attorney in the Cayman Islands:
*Subject: Vance Minor Child Trust - Execution of Incompetence Clause.*

*Status: Daniel Vance remains emotionally unstable. The grandmother is aging. We trigger the secondary audit next week. Ensure the child welfare petition is ready for filing in Hartford court on Monday morning.*
Harold wasn't just observing. He was preparing to strike again. He was going to use Daniel’s past criminal negligence conviction—the very record Harold had manufactured—to take Lily away forever.
