Chapter 18 - The Mask Falls

"Turn it off!" Eleanor shrieked, lunging toward Claire with her manicured hands hooked into claws. "Turn the screens off! Cut the power!"

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't step back. When Eleanor reached for the tablet, Claire caught her wrist with a grip forged through ten years of lifting laundry crates and scrubbing industrial machinery. She twisted Eleanor’s arm back with cold, effortless precision, forcing the aristocratic matriarch down onto one knee before her own donors.

"You told the press my mother belonged in a cage," Claire whispered into Eleanor’s ear, loud enough for the open podium microphone to broadcast every syllable to five million television viewers. "You told the city she was a thief. Look at the screen, Eleanor. Tell the governor which one of us is the criminal."

"You little gutter rat," Eleanor hissed through clenched teeth, her face purpling with rage, her diamond necklace shaking against her withered throat. "You think this matters? You think a few lines of code will destroy us? We *own* this state! The courts belong to me! Charles will be back in this country with an army of corporate attorneys before the banks open on Monday!"

"He won't make it to Monday," Marcus said, stepping onto the stage from the wings.

He didn't pull his gun. He held up a satellite phone connected directly to Interpol’s Federal Command Desk in Lyon.

"Swiss Federal Police raided Chalet Vance fifteen minutes ago," Marcus said, his voice ringing through the cavernous hall like a funeral bell. "Charles Whitmore was arrested attempting to board a private helicopter at Geneva International. They seized two million in bearer bonds, four diplomatic passports, and his encrypted communications server. He’s already in custody, Eleanor. And he sang your name to the prosecutors before the handcuffs were fully clicked."

Thomas Vance backed away from the stage, his face the color of skim milk. He turned to flee toward the service exits, only to find three heavily armed agents from the state Attorney General’s Special Crimes Division blocking the marble archway.

"Step away from the exits, Mr. Vance," the lead agent said, his badge gleaming in the overhead lights. "Hands where we can see them."

Vanessa walked down the grand staircase, step by slow, deliberate step. The eight hundred guests parted before her like the Red Sea, shrinking back from the woman in the maid’s dress as if her poverty were contagious.

She walked up onto the stage and stood beside Claire.

Together, the two sisters looked down at Eleanor Vance, who was now kneeling on the marble floor, her velvet gown trailing in spilled wine, her pearls hanging loose, her empire crumbling around her ears in front of the television cameras she had invited to witness her triumph.

Vanessa reached down, caught the heavy diamond necklace around Eleanor’s throat, and with a single, sharp yank, snapped the platinum wire.

Diamonds scattered across the stage like hail, bouncing off the polished marble, rolling into the front row of seats.

"That's for Margaret," Vanessa whispered.
