Chapter 15 - The Ambush in the Ash

Claire slammed the key into the customized USB-interface chassis beneath the main terminal.
The console screamed.
A high-pitched operational chime echoed off the damp walls as lines of emerald-green diagnostic code cascaded down the center monitor at blinding speed.
`DECRYPTION KEY ACCEPTED: WHITMORE_OMEGA_LEDGER.`
`SYSTEM INITIALIZING UNRESTRICTED ACCESS.`
`REMOTE IP LOCATED: GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - CHALET VANCE.`
"Marcus!" Claire shouted, her fingers flying over the mechanical keyboard with the desperate speed of someone fighting for air. "He's not just using his own accounts! Eleanor Vance co-signed the liquidation of the restitution fund! Her private foundation received twenty million of the stolen forty!"
"Download it to the flash drive!" Marcus yelled, pivoting toward the blast door. His instincts flared half a second before the concrete around the doorframe exploded into dust and lead.
*THWIP-THWIP-THWIP.*
Suppressed automatic fire chewed through the rusted iron of the hatch.
"Down!" Marcus bellowed, tackling Vanessa and Evelyn to the floor behind a reinforced server cabinet. Sparks rained over them like blinding meteors as high-caliber rounds perforated the steel casings, severing cooling lines and filling the bunker with acrid, white chemical smoke.
"They weren't just monitoring the feeds!" Marcus shouted over the din, returning fire through the gap in the doorway with three controlled, deafening double-taps. "Eleanor had a wet-work team pre-staged in the neighborhood! They knew we were coming here!"
"How much time do you need, Claire?!" Vanessa screamed from beneath Marcus’s protective arm, shielding Evelyn’s head with her hands.
"Forty seconds!" Claire yelled back. A bullet struck the concrete inches above her head, showering her hair with stinging grit. She didn't duck. Her hand stayed clamped on the transfer drive. "The download is at sixty-five percent! If I pull the key now, the partition corrupts and we have no proof to clear Evelyn!"
Through the smoke, a figure clad in black tactical gear and a night-vision respirator stepped through the breached hatch, his carbine leveled directly at Claire’s chest.
There was no time for Marcus to aim around the server bank.
There was no time for Vanessa to scream.
Evelyn Morgan moved.
The fragile, broken woman who had spent two decades trembling at shadows rose from the floor with a terrifying, primal screech. She lunged forward, not like a victim, but like a mother whose child was about to be butchered. She threw herself onto the mercenary’s gun barrel, driving the weapon downward just as the trigger was pulled.
The bullet tore through the concrete between Claire’s feet.
The mercenary swung his elbow back, striking Evelyn across the cheek and sending her crashing into the side of the terminal. But that single second was all Marcus Reed needed.
A single 9mm round caught the mercenary in the side of his neck. The man dropped like a cut marionette, his rifle clattering against the metal decking.
`DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. FILE ENCRYPTION PURGED.`
Claire yanked the drive from the slot. She didn't look at the dead man on the floor. She dropped to her knees beside Evelyn, whose pale skin was already swelling with a deep purple bruise along her jawline.
"Mom... Mom, stay with me!" Claire choked out, tears finally breaking through her barricade.
Evelyn opened one cloudy, tear-streaked eye. She reached up with a bloodied hand and touched Claire’s cheek.
"The fire didn't take us, Cee-Cee," Evelyn whispered, a faint, triumphant smile parting her cracked lips. "We took the ledger."
"More incoming!" Marcus shouted, reloading his sidearm with a swift, fluid slap of his palm. "We can't hold this room! The ventilation shaft behind the server racks leads to the old drainage culvert running out to the river! Move! NOW!"
Vanessa grabbed Evelyn under the arms, helping Marcus lift her onto his shoulders. Claire took the lead, gripping the dead mercenary’s discarded carbine, racking the charging handle with a sharp, metallic clatter that proved the maid from the Grand Meridian was gone forever.
"Vanessa," Claire said, her voice dropping into an icy, unshakable calm.
May you like
"I'm right behind you," Vanessa replied, her knuckles bleeding, her gown shredded, her eyes burning with an unholy fire. "Lead the way, sister."
