Chapter 9 - THE CONFESSION WITH A MISSING NAME

Nolan Pike sat in the interview room wearing plain detention clothes and staring at a cup of water he had not touched. His attorney explained that Nolan intended to provide truthful information about his work for a private security consultant, but the detective made clear that any legal benefit would depend on verification rather than dramatic promises.
Nolan admitted that he had used a false catering badge and entered the restricted kitchen, then claimed he had been instructed to add a substance from a sealed packet to a particular section of frosting. He said he believed it would cause Oliver to become briefly ill, creating a public emergency that would make Adrian cancel the merger meeting scheduled for the following week.
Claire asked why he continued after seeing the child's name and an allergy warning posted at the preparation station. Nolan looked away and said the person who recruited him had assured him the substance was harmless, a claim that did little to explain his decision to conceal it inside food intended for a child.
His account contained details investigators had not released, including the position of the frosting tub and the time when the kitchen staff changed stations. He described Maya watching him from near the cold room and admitted smiling to make her go away, a recollection so coldly casual that Claire felt her hands tighten beneath the table.
Nolan said he received instructions through a masked messaging service and money through a courier linked to Harbor Vale Advisory. He had seen his contact only twice in person, both times inside a rented office where the blinds remained closed and he was told not to use his phone.
When shown photographs of Marcus, Vanessa, and Celia, Nolan refused to identify any of them as the person who gave the final order. He did recognize Celia's employee, a man named Evan Dorsey, as someone who had delivered the false staff badge, but he insisted he had never met the ultimate client.
Claire did not assume his ignorance was genuine, and she asked about his sudden attempt to flee after the cake fell. Nolan replied that a hidden earpiece had carried a voice telling him to leave immediately, contradicting his earlier statement that all instructions had been delivered before the party.
Investigators recovered an earpiece from his belongings, and a specialist began tracing the associated device and short-range communication records. The new detail suggested that someone nearby had been monitoring events in real time, possibly a guest, employee, or security operative with access to the ballroom.
Adrian heard a carefully summarized version of the interview and fought the urge to demand Nolan's name from the attorney handling the case. The man had watched Oliver lift his fork, and no explanation about debts or deception could erase the choice to act despite the danger visible in front of him.
Oliver was attending therapy when Adrian received the update, drawing a picture of the birthday ballroom from a child's height. He had colored the huge cake bright green instead of white, and the therapist told Adrian not to interpret the picture as evidence but to recognize that Oliver was trying to give shape to a frightening memory.
At home, Adrian asked whether his son wanted to talk about the cake, and Oliver said he wanted to know why someone would hurt a child who had never done anything to them. Adrian admitted that he did not have an answer that would make the act reasonable, because some adults made cruel choices for reasons children could not and should not have to understand.
Maya and Oliver met at a small neighborhood playground on a sunny afternoon, with Elena and Adrian seated nearby and no cameras present. They argued briefly over whose turn it was on the swings, then apologized and continued playing, a wonderfully ordinary conflict that made their parents exchange a relieved glance.
Elena told Adrian that Maya had started sleeping through most nights, though she still asked whether the cake man knew where they lived. Adrian said investigators were addressing the threats, then acknowledged that his ability to employ guards would never replace the peace Elena wanted for her child.
Their conversation shifted to Eleanor's scholarship fund, and Elena spoke about her father, who had been injured in a poorly supervised project long before Adrian led the company. She had grown up hearing that wealthy owners never remembered workers' names, but Eleanor had written a personal letter to the family after the accident and funded Elena's first year of community college.
Adrian realized how little he knew about the consequences of the companies whose earnings he could recite without looking at a balance sheet. He asked Elena if she would help the external review panel understand how assistance programs failed the people they were meant to serve, and she agreed only after confirming that beneficiaries would have genuine voting representation.
Later that day, investigators arrested Evan Dorsey on allegations concerning fraudulent badges and evidence tampering. Evan requested counsel immediately, but a notebook seized under warrant contained a partial contact number that matched an account used to communicate with Nolan before the birthday party.
The notebook also contained a list of times when Marcus and Celia had meetings, with several entries marked by a small triangle. Claire compared the triangles with payment dates and found a pattern, yet she needed a witness willing to connect those meetings directly to the plot against Oliver.
Vanessa recognized the triangle when shown a legally obtained copy of the notebook. She said Marcus used the mark to identify transactions requiring her signature before outside trustees could review them, a detail that exposed how thoroughly he had trained family members to treat secrecy as routine business procedure.
Samuel warned Adrian that the foundation could face criminal and civil consequences extending far beyond the attempted poisoning. Instead of seeking a confidential settlement to protect the family name, Adrian authorized an independent remediation program and instructed counsel to cooperate with lawful investigators while preserving everyone's right to a fair process.

On the evening before a scheduled shareholders' hearing, Claire received the earpiece analysis, which showed a connection to a wireless transmitter hidden near the ballroom's upper gallery. That transmitter had been removed after the chaos, but an installer log associated it with temporary audio equipment ordered for the birthday party under a name Adrian knew well.
The request had been approved by Margaret Ellis, though the vendor had substituted equipment at the last minute on authorization from Marcus's events office. Adrian stared at the overlapping permissions and wondered whether the next revelation would finally identify the planner or merely uncover another person whom the planner had used.
