Chapter 10 - THE HEARING

The shareholder hearing convened in a glass conference tower overlooking the Potomac, where the Whitmore name gleamed above the reception desk in letters Adrian had once thought indestructible. Outside, reporters waited behind temporary barriers, eager for a confrontation between cousins whose family businesses employed thousands of people and whose private dispute had become a public investigation.
Adrian had agreed to a special meeting under the supervision of independent directors, determined that any decision about the merger be based on verified financial risks rather than the performance of family unity. He brought Samuel Price, Thomas Keene, and an outside forensic accountant whose presentation would expose transactions the company had avoided discussing for years.
Marcus entered surrounded by lawyers and advisers, looking thinner than at the birthday party but still wearing the confident smile that had reassured creditors through repeated losses. He shook hands with directors, asked about their children, and appeared untroubled by the police investigation, a performance Adrian might once have interpreted as proof of innocence.
The audit presentation began with the housing portfolio, showing that several properties had been pledged as collateral for loans whose proceeds were transferred through consulting companies. The financial analyst explained that the same companies billed the foundation for community programs that either did not exist or were delivered at a fraction of the invoiced value.
Marcus argued that some invoices reflected bundled services and criticized the audit for failing to account for temporary pandemic-era disruptions. The accountant answered with vendor records, contemporaneous emails, and testimony from program managers, identifying precisely which conclusions were confirmed and which remained disputed.
The room grew quiet when the analyst displayed scholarship accounts whose withdrawals coincided with payments to Harbor Vale. A director who had served on the foundation's education committee asked how anyone could justify draining money designated for grieving families, and Marcus replied that the transfers had been part of an internal liquidity arrangement approved by advisers.
Samuel produced the trust's authentic restrictions, explaining that neither Adrian nor Marcus could redirect Oliver's voting interest without independent approval. He then described the forged amendment and the system history that showed the decisive changes occurring after Eleanor's death, stopping short of identifying an author until the criminal investigation established one.
Marcus rose to protest that the hearing was becoming a trial conducted without due process. Adrian agreed that no one should be declared guilty by a boardroom vote, then asked the directors to make the narrow decision actually before them: whether a company under investigation should transfer its most valuable assets through a merger before independent oversight was complete.
Several directors looked down at their papers, aware that rejecting the merger might trigger lenders' demands. Adrian placed an independently reviewed financing proposal before them, offering a temporary bridge funded by his personal equity and negotiated with conditions intended to protect employees and creditors from reckless delay.
The proposal cost him something real, including the possibility of losing a controlling stake if the company could not stabilize. He told the board that he would not ask other people to absorb risks he refused to bear himself, and for once his family's wealth felt less like a shield than a responsibility he had avoided.
While the directors debated, Detective Bennett and her team interviewed the temporary audio installer who had worked in the ballroom gallery. The installer said he had received a late-night call from Celia's office ordering him to route a private transmitter through a guest communications channel, an unusual request he documented because it conflicted with the event contract.
He supplied his original work order and a photograph taken to prove that the unauthorized transmitter had been installed according to written instructions. The image showed a cable ending near the gallery's service desk, where a small receiver could have been operated without attracting attention from guests below.
A separate visitor log showed Marcus's aide entering that gallery shortly before Maya knocked over the cake. Investigators confirmed the timing with video from a distant camera, though the footage did not show who spoke through the transmitter or whether the aide understood its purpose.
At the hearing Marcus received a message and abruptly requested an adjournment, arguing that new information required consultation with counsel. The chair permitted a short recess, during which Adrian found his cousin standing alone by a floor-to-ceiling window, staring at the city with an expression stripped of its usual polish.
“You think I wanted this?” Marcus asked without turning around, though Adrian had not accused him of anything aloud. Adrian replied that he wanted to know why the family had hidden debts, forged documents, and allowed a dangerous intruder near Oliver, and that he would not confuse financial panic with an excuse for harming a child.
Marcus said he had spent years keeping lenders from dismantling the Whitmore businesses while Adrian played the visionary and received the praise. He claimed Eleanor's trust had made refinancing nearly impossible, then stopped himself as if he suddenly heard how closely his resentment approached an admission of motive.
Adrian asked whether Marcus had known Nolan Pike would be at the party, and Marcus turned away rather than answer. Their silence ended when Samuel entered to say the directors were ready to vote, and both men walked back into the room with the distant sound of reporters calling questions from the street.
The board voted to suspend merger negotiations, appoint an independent restructuring committee, and refer all relevant financial findings to the appropriate authorities. Marcus was placed on administrative leave from executive duties pending review, a decision that did not presume guilt but removed his ability to alter records or direct the company's response.

Afterward a courier delivered a sealed note to Adrian's temporary office, addressed in block letters and accompanied by a photocopy of an old foundation audit. The note said that Marcus was not the person who had first proposed using Oliver's allergy, a claim Adrian recognized might be true, manipulative, or intended to fracture the investigation.
At the bottom was a date six weeks before the party and the name of a private meeting venue. It was the same afternoon Elena remembered seeing a silver car waiting outside the estate while Vanessa and Celia argued near the service gate, a detail she had dismissed then because she had no reason to believe a child's birthday was being planned as a crime.
