Chapter 20 - The Seventh Name

Claire scrambled through the wet, mud-slicked drainage culvert, her knees tearing against jagged concrete, her lungs burning from the black smoke billowing behind her. Lily was crying now—a piercing, frantic wail that cut through the thunderclaps above.

She burst out of the ditch into the pouring rain of the overgrown cemetery, tumbling across the soaked grass between tilted slate headstones.

Behind her, St. Jude’s chapel was engulfed in a towering column of orange flame, the ancient stained-glass windows shattering outward in a cascade of glittering, burning shards.

There was no sign of Daniel.

Panting, drenched in mud and cold rainwater, Claire sheltered behind the massive granite mausoleum of a long-dead governor. Her hands shaking uncontrollably, she pulled the scorched ledger from her soaked overcoat to ensure the pages hadn't been ruined.

A sealed envelope fell from between the burnt leather pages, stamped with the red wax seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission and marked: *The True Heir - Final Allocation.*

Claire tore the wax open with her teeth, unfolding the heavy vellum document beneath the faint light of her phone screen.

Her eyes scanned the legal preamble down to the final seven lines of code.

Six names were listed as the engineered trusts. All six had been crossed out with red ink, marked *Deceased* or *Liquidated.*

The seventh name—the sole surviving entity entitled to the entirety of the three-billion-dollar offshore foundation, the child whose genetic code was designed from conception to unlock every vault in Zurich—was not Lily.

It was Claire.

Before Claire’s mind could even comprehend the horrifying impossibility of the document in her hands, the sharp, freezing click of a pistol hammer cocked directly behind her right ear.

A cold hand reached through the dark, resting heavily on her soaked shoulder.

"Welcome home, little sister," a quiet voice murmured from the shadows.
