Chapter 13 - Bloodline on Paper

The air in the room felt instantly thin. Claire looked from the court filing to Daniel’s haunted eyes. The pieces of an unspeakable puzzle were beginning to interlock with horrifying precision.

"Daniel, what does this mean?" Claire’s voice was barely a breath.

"It means my mother didn't marry into an empire," Daniel said, his fists clenching until the knuckles split white. "She married into an assignment. The Bennett family line ended biologically when my father was rendered sterile by childhood scarlet fever. My grandfather paid Bellweather thirty million dollars to procure an infant whose true lineage was wiped from every public registry on earth."

He pointed a trembling finger at the birth record contained within the judicial petition. The birth weight, the hospital room number, the attending physician—everything mirrored Daniel’s own certified birth certificate, except for one catastrophic detail.

The biological mother listed on the sealed original document was not Evelyn Bennett.

It was Sarah Vance. The older sister of Samuel’s uncle—the very accountant who had spent three years in federal prison for attempting to expose the company’s internal transfers.

Samuel leaped out of his chair, nearly knocking his mug to the floor. "That’s impossible! My aunt Sarah supposedly died in a car wreck in Maine in 1997!"

"She didn't die," Daniel answered, his voice cracking with an agonizing mixture of grief and revelation. "She was paid ten million dollars, forced to surrender her newborn son, and threatened with life imprisonment on falsified wire-fraud charges if she ever stepped foot on the eastern seaboard again."

Claire stood frozen, her gaze darting between Daniel and Samuel. The resemblance had always been subtle—the same sharp bridge of the nose, the identical slate-gray tint in the iris that everyone had dismissed as an eerie coincidence of New England breeding.

They weren't business rivals. They were blood cousins.
