Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Neon Corridor

Two days later, the storm had finally broken outside, leaving the city washed in gray, overcast light.

Claire sat in a private, heavily guarded room on the hospital’s executive VIP floor. The entrance was secured by two off-duty police officers hired privately by Daniel. The room was warm, filled with bouquets of fresh white lilies and pastel-colored baby blankets sent by her extended family and friends.

A heavy knock sounded on the wooden door. Daniel opened it, stepping aside as Head Nurse Margaret entered.

Margaret carried a physical manila envelope—the official, fully audited, certified paper medical record of Claire’s pregnancy.

"It’s done, Claire," Margaret said, placing the file gently into Claire’s lap. "The State Department of Health and the Federal Medical Fraud Division have concluded their on-site audit. Every unauthorized entry has been purged from the system. Your maternal rights are legally unassailable. Your blood typing has been permanently locked under maximum biometric security: O-Negative. And your baby is officially registered under your maiden name: *Arthur Vance Junior.*"

Claire ran her fingers over the embossed hospital seal on the folder. A heavy tear slipped from her eye, splashing against the cardstock. "Thank you, Margaret. You saved my life. You saved my son’s life."

"I was just doing my job, Claire," Margaret replied, her voice soft with genuine warmth. "A hospital should be a sanctuary. When people like Vanessa Cole and Ryan Vance turn it into a crime scene, they disgrace everything we stand for."

"How is the baby, Claire?" Daniel asked, walking over and placing a warm hand on his sister's shoulder.

"The doctor ran a full stress test this morning," Claire smiled through her tears, placing her palm against her rounded belly. "He’s doing incredible. The contractions have completely subsided. Dr. Hayes says we can carry him all the way to thirty-eight weeks without any complications."

Suddenly, Claire’s private phone, resting on the bedside table, began to vibrate.

The screen displayed an incoming call from a correctional facility number: *METROPOLITAN DETENTION CENTER - COLLECT CALL.*

Daniel frowned, moving to pick up the phone. "I’ll decline it."

"No," Claire said firmly, reaching out to stop him. "Give it to me, Daniel."

"Claire, you don't need to hear his voice," Daniel warned gently. "The DA told us he’s facing thirty-five years to life without parole. The paper trail Vanessa handed over was airtight."

"I know," Claire said. "I want to hear it."

Claire took the phone, swiped the screen, and brought it to her ear. She pressed the automated button to accept the collect call charges.

"Claire?"

Ryan’s voice came through the receiver, but it was unrecognizable. The polished, charismatic, arrogant tone was utterly pulverized. He sounded raspy, broken, and terrified. In the background, the hollow clang of prison gates and the shouting of inmates echoed over the line.

"Claire, please don't hang up," Ryan begged, his breath ragged. "Please, God, don't hang up."

"I'm listening, Ryan," Claire said, her voice devoid of any warmth, anger, or pity. It was the voice of a judge addressing a condemned man.

"Claire... they have me in administrative segregation," Ryan wept openly, his voice trembling with pathetic terror. "They’re treating me like a monster. The bail was set at five million dollars in cash—I don't have it! The syndicates in Miami found out where I am... they’ve put a bounty on me inside this facility, Claire! I won't survive thirty days in here!"

"You should have thought about that before you borrowed from criminals to fund your vanity, Ryan."

"Claire, I was desperate!" he sobbed. "I made a terrible mistake! I was sick in the head! But we were married, Claire! We loved each other! Remember Maui? Remember our vows on the beach? You swore to stand by me for better or for worse!"

Claire looked down at the pale-blue medical file resting on her lap. She looked at the sonogram picture tucked inside the transparent sleeve—a tiny, perfect human face resting peacefully inside her womb, unaware of the monstrous treachery that had almost extinguished his life.

"I promised to stand by my husband, Ryan," Claire said, each word deliberate, sharp, and final. "Not the monster who forged my death warrant while I was sleeping. Not the coward who struck his pregnant wife to protect the woman helping him steal our child."

"Claire, please! Just use the trust fund to post my bail! Just get me into private home confinement! I’ll sign whatever you want! I’ll sign over every asset, every car, the house—everything! Just don't leave me to die in here!"

Claire drew a deep, cleansing breath. For the first time in seven months, her chest felt completely light. The suffocating weight, the anxiety, the inexplicable coldness that had crept through her marriage—it was all gone.

"Goodbye, Ryan," Claire said quietly. "May God have more mercy on your soul than you had on ours."

May you like

She tapped the red icon, ending the call.
