Chapter 13 - The Frozen Warning

The private security team moved with clinical precision, but Claire refused to stay confined behind the reinforced glass of the master suite. She marched down the gravel driveway, flanking Daniel, while two armed guards kept their weapons drawn at low ready. The sun beat down mercilessly, turning the crushed stone beneath their boots into a shimmering heat haze.

In the center of the turning circle sat an industrial-grade, stainless-steel medical transport cooler. It was the exact type used by organ procurement teams to transport living tissue between trauma centers. Painted across the brushed metal in dripping, blood-red stencil was a single name:

*ARTHUR VANCE.*

"Claire, stay back," Daniel commanded, raising an arm to block her path. "The local bomb disposal unit is en route from Portland. We don't know what’s inside."

"It's not an explosive," Claire said, her voice eerily hollow. She pointed a trembling finger toward the bottom edge of the container. A thin trail of condensation mixed with cold, vaporous frost was leaking out into the gravel. "Explosives don't run on liquid nitrogen cooling coils. That’s a surgical cryo-tank."

She didn't wait for Daniel’s permission. Ignoring the security guard’s warning shout, Claire strode forward, knelt beside the freezing container, and snapped the dual stainless-steel latches.

A hiss of pressurized white vapor hissed outward, smelling sharply of sterile dry ice and synthetic preservative.

Inside, resting on a bed of blue thermal packs, was not a severed limb or a grotesque threat of violence. It was something far more terrifying in its calculating precision.

Nestled in the center of the frost lay an unsealed manila envelope labeled *ST. JUDE’S OBSTETRICS — ARCHIVED RECORDS (LEVEL 4 RESTRICTED)*. Beneath the envelope rested an antique silver baby rattle—the exact heirloom that had belonged to the Vance family for four generations, an item Ryan had claimed was lost in a bank vault fire three years prior.

Tied to the rattle with surgical twine was a laminated patient identification bracelet.

Claire picked it up with shaking fingers. Her vision swam as she read the printed text:

*PATIENT: BABY BOY STERLING-VANCE*

*DOB: [REDACTED]*

*STATUS: DONOR HARVEST COMPLETE*

*AUTHORIZED BY: DR. E. REED / R. VANCE*

*LOCATION: ST. JUDE'S SUB-BASEMENT LAB B-2*

"This isn't an old record," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as Daniel knelt beside her, his face draining of all color. "Look at the barcode timestamp at the bottom, Daniel. Look at the date."

Daniel grabbed the laminated band, his eyes scanning the microscopic thermal print. "It was generated yesterday. At 11:42 PM."

"Arthur was born in the main maternity theater on the third floor," Claire said, rising to her feet as a wave of nausea rocked her equilibrium. "Margaret swore to me on her mother's grave that every single falsified document, every shadow file Ryan had created, was seized by the FBI during the dawn raid. So what is Sub-Basement Lab B-2?"

Daniel reached into the cooler, pulling out the thick manila envelope. He broke the wax seal and slid out a stack of high-resolution ultrasound scans.

As he flipped through the glossy thermal paper, a folded piece of stationery slipped from between the pages and drifted onto the gravel. Claire snatched it up.

Written in elegant, black fountain-pen ink was a handwritten note from Evelyn Reed:

*Did you really believe the legal system could dismantle an operation that has funded the most powerful dynasties on the Eastern seaboard for thirty years, Claire? Ryan was merely the public face—an arrogant boy who spent money he didn't earn. You took his freedom, but you failed to check the foundation beneath the hospital.*

*Arthur was never just a son to Ryan. He was a match. A 99.8% human leukocyte antigen match for someone who pays ten million dollars a year to stay alive.*

*Pack your bags, darling. Bring the boy to the Old Port docks in Portland tonight before midnight. If you contact the marshals, the medical annex in Westchester will suffer a tragic oxygen supply failure. Ryan will die in his bed... and with him, the location of the other children you think you saved.*

May you like

*Tick-tock, Mother.*
