Chapter 5 - The Sister's Audacity

The next morning, Elena drove David's old backup sedan to a quiet, upscale organic market in downtown Scarsdale. She needed groceries, but more importantly, she needed to see how closely she was being monitored.
She kept her baseball cap pulled low, dark sunglasses shielding her bruised eyes. As she pushed her shopping cart down the dairy aisle, a sharp, familiar tap hit her shoulder.
Elena spun around.
Chloe stood there, clad in an immaculate camel-hair trench coat, holding a $9 iced matcha latte. Behind her, lingering near the end of the aisle, stood a burly man in an ill-fitting dark suit with an earpiece—Arthur’s private head of security, Victor Vance (no relation to David).
"Fancy meeting you here," Chloe said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. "I thought you were busy having a nervous breakdown in the dark."
Elena stared at her younger sister, seeing her for the first time without the rose-tinted lens of sisterhood. Chloe was empty. A beautiful, polished, narcissistic shell incapable of empathy.
"What do you want, Chloe?" Elena said, her tone flat and devoid of emotion.
Chloe took a delicate sip through her green straw. "Daddy told me what happened yesterday. He didn't tell me what was on that little flash drive, but he was furious. He stayed up all night in his study pacing holes in the Persian rug."
Chloe stepped closer, lowering her voice, her eyes sparkling with malicious triumph.
"I’m here to give you one last sisterly warning, El. Daddy has already drafted the emergency conservatorship petition. He has two board-certified psychiatrists on the family payroll ready to sign affidavits stating you are clinically depressed, suicidal, and experiencing severe persecutory delusions following the deaths of David and the kids."
Elena’s jaw tightened. "He wouldn't dare."
"Oh, he already did!" Chloe giggled, a chilling, childlike sound. "The petition gets filed with the county probate judge tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Judge Hastings plays golf with Daddy every Sunday at Winged Foot. By tomorrow afternoon, Daddy will have legal guardianship over you and total power of attorney over all your assets. Including this house."
Chloe reached out and tapped the rim of Elena’s shopping cart with her French-manicured fingernail.
"Daddy promised me your house as my wedding gift, Elena. Liam and I have already hired an interior designer. We’re turning Leo’s nursery into my walk-in shoe closet, and Maya’s bedroom is going to be Liam’s private cigar lounge. So here’s the deal: you hand over that black USB drive to Victor right now, you sign the voluntary deed transfer, and Daddy will let you live in a nice, quiet private clinic in Vermont with an unlimited supply of Xanax."
Chloe tilted her head, her smile turning razor-sharp.
"Or you refuse, and Daddy will have Victor throw you into a locked psych ward where nobody will ever hear you scream again. What’s it going to be, big sister?"
Elena looked past Chloe at Victor, who crossed his beefy arms, daring her to make a scene.
In the past, Elena would have dissolved into tears. She would have pleaded for mercy, begged Chloe to remember the times they shared as little girls building pillow forts in their attic.
Instead, Elena leaned in close to Chloe’s ear.
"Do you know what David found before he died, Chloe?" Elena whispered softly, her breath warm against her sister’s cheek.
Chloe’s triumphant smile wavered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"He found the wire transfers for your lavish lifestyle," Elena murmured with deadly precision. "The $200,000 Cartier necklace you wore to your birthday dinner. The $50,000-a-month trust fund allowance. The down payment on Liam’s hedge fund partnership. Every single penny was stolen from retired factory workers and laundered through shell companies tied to human trafficking rings."
Chloe recoiled, her face flushing crimson. "You’re lying! Daddy earns his money!"
"And when that black drive goes public," Elena continued, stepping forward as Chloe instinctively took a step back, "the federal government won't just seize Dad’s assets. They will seize your engagement ring. They will seize your designer clothes. They will freeze your bank accounts down to the last copper penny. You will be penniless, Chloe. Liam will dump you within forty-eight hours because his family only wants your father’s dirty money. You will be completely alone, disgraced, and unemployable."
"Shut up!" Chloe hissed, her voice cracking with sudden panic. "Victor! Grab her!"
Victor stepped forward aggressively, reaching inside his suit coat.
Elena didn't blink. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and pointed the active camera directly at Victor’s face. A red recording light blinked steadily.
"Go ahead, Victor," Elena said loudly, loud enough to attract the attention of four nearby suburban mothers pushing strollers. "Assault a grieving widow in broad daylight on 4K video. Let’s see how your probation officer feels about an aggravated felony assault charge on a public live-stream."
Victor froze. He cursed under his breath, took a step back, and shook his head at Chloe. "Not here, Miss Sterling. Too many witnesses."
Chloe’s hands were shaking so hard she spilled matcha latte across her immaculate coat. "You’re dead, Elena! You hear me?! You’re dead!"
May you like
Elena calmly turned her cart around, left it in the center of the aisle, and walked out the glass doors without looking back.
