Chapter 5 - The Raid on Suite 1402

At 11:28 PM, the fourteenth floor of the St. Regis Hotel was cloaked in heavy, suffocating silence. The thick, custom-woven carpets muffled the footsteps of eight heavily armed officers from the Boston Police Department’s Special Operations Unit. Dressed in tactical black body armor, with suppressed carbines held in the low-ready position, they stacked tightly against the wall flanking Suite 1402.
Inside the suite, two men sat across from each other at a glass dining table.
Victor Thorne, a fifty-two-year-old former antiquities dealer turned high-end fencing operative for Eastern European criminal networks, checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that concealed a customized SIG Sauer P226 in an Italian leather shoulder holster.
Across from him sat a younger, broad-shouldered man named Roman, whose neck bore the faded ink of Russian prison tattoos. On the table between them sat an open aluminum briefcase lined with high-density foam, designed specifically for the transport of unmounted gemstones and antique jewelry.
"He's late," Roman said in a low, gravelly accent. "The idiot Vance was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago. The reception downstairs ended in an ambulance and three squad cars."
Thorne picked up a crystal tumbler of sparkling water, his expression unimpressed. "Preston Vance is an incompetent degenerate. If he botched the delivery, his mother still controls the trust bonds. Either we get the emerald tonight, or we take the deed to their Cape Cod compound. Either way, his debt will be settled before sunrise."
"And if he talked to the police?" Roman asked, his hand drifting casually toward his jacket lapel.
"Preston doesn't have the stomach for prison," Thorne said smoothly. "He knows what happens to men who owe our employers. He’ll show up. He has nowhere else to run."
At that precise moment, the heavy oak door of Suite 1402 erupted inward with a deafening crack.
A flashbang grenade arced through the doorway, detonating with a blinding burst of white light and a concussive roar that shattered the panoramic bay windows overlooking Boston Harbor.
"POLICE! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!"
Tactical officers flooded the room like a tidal wave of black steel. Roman lunged toward his weapon, but before his fingers could clear leather, two non-lethal rubber composite rounds struck him squarely in the chest, throwing him violently backward across the glass table. The table shattered under his weight in an explosion of tempered shards.
Thorne, recognizing the futility of resistance, instantly raised his hands into the air, his face illuminated by the dancing red laser dots targeting his chest.
"Down on the floor! Face down! DO IT NOW!"
Within forty-five seconds, both men were pinned, disarmed, and secured in heavy-duty flex-cuffs.
Detective Vance stepped into the smoke-filled room, stepping over the shattered glass. He looked down at Victor Thorne, who lay flat against the plush carpet, breathing heavily.
"Victor Thorne," Vance said, pulling a laminated photo from his pocket and comparing it to the man's face. "Interpol Red Notice for wire fraud, money laundering, and illegal trafficking of cultural artifacts. Welcome back to Massachusetts, Victor."
Thorne didn't speak. His cold, gray eyes stared impassively at the floorboards.
"You were waiting on a package from Preston Vance," Vance continued, nudging the empty aluminum transport case with the toe of his combat boot. "A green stone with eight carats of history. I’m afraid delivery has been permanently canceled. But don't worry—Preston and his mother are already downstairs waiting for the transport van. You’ll have plenty of time to catch up in the holding pens at Charles Street Jail."
Vance keyed his tactical radio. "Command, this is Vance. Suite 1402 is secure. Two high-value targets in custody. Recovered encrypted satellite phones and transport hardware. Send the crime scene techs up."
"Copy that, Detective," the radio crackled back. "The District Attorney just arrived on scene on the ground floor. She’s requesting an immediate briefing with Mrs. Evelyn Carter."

Vance took a deep breath, looking out through the blown-out window at the sparkling lights of the city skyline below. The Vance family’s reign of deceit, manipulation, and aristocratic cruelty had finally met its end.
