Chapter 8 - The Paper Fortress

At 8:45 AM, fifteen minutes before the financial markets opened, Julian walked through the towering bronze doors of Crestview Capital on Wall Street.

He was not wearing his tailored corporate suit. He wore the same blood-stained dress shirt from the previous night, his bruised jaw exposed to the sterile fluorescent lights of the private banking atrium. Beside him walked Arthur Vance’s lifelong corporate counsel, Harold Sterling—an eighty-two-year-old legal titan who had drafted the original Vance family trusts four decades prior.

The receptionist at the marble desk stood up immediately, her rehearsed corporate smile faltering at the sight of Julian’s battered face.

"Mr. Vance... we weren't expecting you this morning. Your sister and your mother are currently in the executive conference suite with Mr. Crestview."

"I know," Julian said, his voice cold and flat as a razor. "Don't announce us."

Julian and Sterling bypassed the security turnstiles using Sterling’s emeritus board pass. They walked down the quiet, carpeted corridor lined with expensive modern art until they reached the frosted glass doors of Suite 1400.

Through the glass, the muffled sound of Evelyn’s cultured, haughty voice was clearly audible:

*"...the paperwork is completely in order, Richard. Julian’s violent episode last night has left him completely incapable of managing these assets. The court filing will be rubber-stamped by Judge Thornton by noon. You must execute the offshore transfer to Zurich now, before the hospital records complicate the estate’s liquidity."*

Julian didn't knock. He planted his boot against the center seam of the double doors and shoved them open with a deafening thud.

The scene inside froze instantly.

Evelyn Vance sat at the head of the long mahogany table, dressed in an immaculate cream cashmere coat, her gold rings catching the morning light. Across from her sat Megan, wearing dark sunglasses to hide the swelling on her cheek, an open leather folder before her. Standing beside them was Richard Crestview, the senior managing partner, his pen hovering over a three-page wire authorization document.

Megan gasped, half-rising from her leather chair, her hands flying to her throat. "Julian?!"

Evelyn didn't flinch. Her aristocratic poise remained intact, though the color instantly drained from her lips. She stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her coat, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"Julian," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with venomous condescension. "How dare you interrupt this meeting? You should be in a psychiatric evaluation after what you did to your sister last night. Richard, call building security immediately. My son is mentally unstable."

"Sit down, Evelyn," Harold Sterling’s raspy, ancient voice cut through the room like a bullwhip.

Richard Crestview stopped reaching for the intercom, his eyes going wide as he recognized the elderly lawyer. "Harold? What is the meaning of this?"

"The meaning, Richard," Sterling said, stepping forward and dropping a heavy, red-wax-sealed envelope onto the mahogany table, "is that you are about to participate in grand larceny, wire fraud, and an act of corporate treason that will see your license revoked by the SEC before lunchtime."

Megan’s hands began to tremble. "Richard, don't listen to them! The conservatorship petition is already filed! Julian pushed his wife down the stairs! He attacked me!"

Julian walked forward slowly, his heavy steps measured, stopping directly across the table from his sister. He didn't yell. He didn't raise his hand. He simply reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a portable tablet, and laid it flat on the wood.

He pressed play.

The 4K footage filled the room with crystal-clear audio and video. Evelyn watching in horror as the screen displayed Megan deliberately shoving me from behind. Then the enhanced audio boomed from the tablet speakers:

*"Evelyn. It’s done. The girl went down hard. Call Bradley and tell him to submit the affidavit now... Execute the Crestview wire before noon."*

Richard Crestview backed away from the table as if it were on fire, his hands raised in the air. "My God... Evelyn, what is this?!"

"It’s an edited deepfake!" Megan shrieked, her voice turning high and hysterical. "He manufactured it! He’s trying to frame me! Mom, tell him!"

Evelyn’s composure finally cracked. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. She looked at her son—really looked at him—and saw that the boy who had spent thirty years desperate for her approval was completely, utterly dead.

"The police have already searched the hallway, Evelyn," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of chilling finality. "They found the vial of succinylcholine you dropped in the umbrella stand. Dr. Bradley was arrested at his clinic twenty minutes ago. He broke under interrogation in less than five minutes. He gave them the encrypted text messages between you and Megan detailing the entire plan."

Megan collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, her breath coming in ragged, hyperventilating sobs. "No... no, no, no..."

Evelyn slowly sank back into her seat, her haughty posture crumbling inward, her hands trembling so violently that her gold bracelets rattled against the table.

"Julian..." Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking, trying to summon the old, manipulative warmth she had used on him since he was a child. "Julian, my darling... you don't understand. Everything I did... I did it to protect this family. Your father was so hard on Megan... he was going to leave her with nothing... she made mistakes, yes, but she’s your sister! Blood must protect blood!"

Julian leaned down, resting both palms on the mahogany table, bringing his face inches from his mother’s.

"My blood," Julian whispered, each word cold as an Arctic winter, "is currently in Room 412 of St. Jude’s Hospital, fighting for his life because you shoved his mother down a flight of stairs. You aren't my family, Evelyn. You are just two thieves who ran out of time."

He turned to Harold Sterling. "Harold. Execute the codicil."

Sterling reached across the table, took the wire authorization form from beneath Richard Crestview’s trembling hand, and tore it in half with a crisp, final *rip*.

"By the authority of the Arthur Vance 1994 Testamentary Trust," Sterling announced, "Megan Vance and Evelyn Vance are hereby stripped of all beneficiary standing, executive titles, and corporate allowances. Their personal accounts tied to Vance Holdings are frozen under an emergency civil freeze order."

At that precise moment, the frosted double doors of Suite 1400 swung open once more.

Detective Miller walked in, flanked by four uniformed NYPD officers, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"Megan Vance. Evelyn Vance," Miller announced, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his vest. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, and grand larceny. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."
