Chapter 7 - No Heaven for Wolves

The gun battle had degenerated into a brutal, claustrophobic war of attrition amid the smoke and shadows.

Salvatore was bleeding from a shrapnel wound to his shoulder, but he held the perimeter, his submachine gun barking in short, controlled bursts to keep the remaining two contractors pinned behind a forklift.

Julian moved through the smoke like a wraith. His suit was coated in soot and drywall dust, but his movements were methodical, deadly, and entirely focused on the center of the room.

Leo was still tied to the chair, coughing violently, the concussive blasts from the gunfire causing him to hyperventilate.

“Leo!” Julian shouted, dropping behind a concrete pillar twenty feet from the boy.

“Julian!” Leo choked out, his vision swimming. “Behind you—!”

Julian spun, raising his Kimber just as a contractor lunged from the shadows with a tactical combat knife. The blade slashed through the wool of Julian’s sleeve, carving a shallow red line across his forearm. Julian didn't flinch. He grabbed the man’s wrist, twisted it until the bone snapped with a sickening pop, drove his elbow into the man’s throat, and fired a single round upward through the base of the contractor’s skull.

The man collapsed in a limp heap.

Suddenly, a loud blast ripped through the air.

A heavy spray of buckshot slammed into the concrete pillar right above Julian’s head, showering him in stone dust and pulverized cement.

Sterling stepped out from behind the steel pipes, his face twisted in a feral, desperate grimace. The federal agent was out of moves, out of backup, and out of time. He racked the shotgun again, leveling the barrel directly at Leo’s head from ten feet away.

“DROP THE WEAPON, VANCE!” Sterling shrieked, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. “Drop it, or I paint this entire wall with the kid’s brains!”

Julian froze.

He slowly lowered the Kimber 1911. His gray eyes locked onto Sterling’s wild, sweat-drenched face.

“You kill the boy, Sterling, and you will spend the next three weeks wishing you had died in this warehouse,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all panic.

“Shut up! SHUT UP!” Sterling screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. “You think you won? I have the encryptor! I have Dominic’s files! Even if you kill me, the secondary servers will wipe your empire out by sunrise! You’re nothing, Vance! You’re just a low-life mobster who got lucky with a Wall Street portfolio!”

“Maybe,” Julian said quietly. He took a slow, deliberate half-step forward. “But I don't abandon my family.”

“He isn't your family!” Sterling roared. “He’s a pawn! And Norah is a fool who gave her life for a man who doesn't have a soul!”

“You’re wrong, Agent Sterling,” a clear, ice-cold voice echoed from the darkness behind him.

Sterling’s eyes widened in horror.

From the shadow of a rusted container near the river entrance, Norah Bennett stepped into the dim light.

She was holding Salvatore’s backup weapon—a matte-black Glock 19—leveled in a steady, two-handed grip directly at the back of Sterling’s head. Her trench coat was torn, her hair was a tangled mess, but her hands were as steady as surgical steel.

“Norah...?” Leo gasped from the chair, tears cutting through the grime on his face.

Sterling began to pivot the heavy shotgun toward her, his face contorting in panic. “You—how did you get here? You’re under federal custody!”

“I was,” Norah whispered, her eyes narrowing into cold slits of pure, unadulterated hatred. “Until your dirty operation fell apart. Put the gun down, Sterling. Or I swear to God, I won’t aim for your vest.”

Sterling’s brain fractured under the weight of the impossible standoff. To his front stood Julian Vance, a legendary butcher waiting for the slightest opening. Behind him stood the secretary he had tried to break, holding a pistol with the cold precision of an assassin.

In a split second of pure, suicidal madness, Sterling made his choice.

He swung the barrel toward Norah.

*BANG.*

Norah didn't hesitate. She squeezed the trigger.

The 9mm round tore through Sterling’s right shoulder, spinning him violently around. The shotgun blasted harmlessly into the ceiling, raining sparks and rusted iron down upon the floor.

Before Sterling could recover, Julian was on him.

Julian crossed the ten feet of distance like a striking panther. He grabbed the barrel of the shotgun, ripped it from Sterling’s shattered grip, and struck the federal agent across the jaw with the heavy steel receiver.

Sterling hit the concrete floor with a concussive thud, blood spraying from his broken nose. Julian planted a heavy boot on Sterling’s chest, pressing down until the agent’s ribs began to groan under the immense pressure. Julian leveled his Kimber directly between Sterling’s eyes.

“Wait,” Norah’s voice cut through the haze of violence.

Julian paused, his finger resting on the trigger, breathing heavily. He looked up at her.

Norah walked forward, lowered her pistol, and dropped to her knees beside her brother. She ripped the ropes away with trembling fingers, pulling Leo into her arms. Leo sobbed into her shoulder, clutching her like a drowning child as he gasped for air.

“Sal!” Julian shouted without taking his eyes off Sterling. “Get the kid’s inhaler from the SUV! Get a medic in here now!”

Salvatore rushed forward, scooping the weak young man into his arms and carrying him out toward the waiting medical van.

Now, only the three of them remained in the center of the ruined warehouse.

Julian looked down at the bleeding, broken agent beneath his boot. Then, he looked at Norah.

“Do you want him dead?” Julian asked her simply. It was an honest question. If she said yes, he would pull the trigger without a second thought.

Norah stood up slowly. She looked down at Marcus Sterling, the man who had terrified her, threatened her brother, and tried to destroy the only man she had ever loved.

“Death is too easy for him,” Norah said, her voice steady, cold, and profoundly powerful. “Give him to the Department of Justice. Give them the unredacted files of his bank accounts in the Bahamas, the surveillance footage of him breaking into Leo’s apartment, and his private communications with Dominic. Let him spend the next forty years in ADX Florence sharing a wall with the men he used to hunt.”

Julian studied her for a moment. A faint, dark smile touched his lips.

“As my secretary commands,” Julian murmured.

He brought the butt of his heavy pistol down across Sterling’s temple, knocking the corrupt agent into merciful, black oblivion.
