Chapter 13 - Bloodline of Sand

The chief deputy, a burly man with graying hair who had known the Vance family for twenty years, looked distinctly uncomfortable as he presented the red-stamped legal documents to Julian.
"Mr. Vance, under the expedited forfeiture statute authorized by the Delaware Court of Chancery, you have two hours to gather personal essentials. Commercial property, vehicles registered to Vance Holding Corp, and all real estate fixtures are now under custodial receivership."
"Two hours?" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward with her fingernails bared like claws. "This is my home! My ancestors were buried in the parish down the road before this woman's family even owned shoes!"
The deputy caught Victoria’s wrists firmly, guiding her back with practiced detachment. "Mrs. Vance, do not make this difficult. If you resist, I will take you into custody for criminal assault based on the pool terrace footage."
"Footage?" Julian echoed, his face turning paper-white.
Clara smiled faintly. "Did you really think Arthur and I agreed to this high-society circus without precautions? The caterers, Julian. Four of the auxiliary bartenders were members of Sterling Global Security. Every angle of that terrace was captured in 4K resolution. The shove. The snicker from your mother. And your hesitation."
Clara stepped closer to Julian, leaning over the mahogany table until she was just inches from him.
"Evelyn didn't just inherit our money, Julian. She inherited her father’s memory. Arthur started with a wrench in a shipyard in Baltimore. He spent twenty years being treated like dirt by men who wore suits paid for by their fathers. He swore his daughter would never be trapped in a family that confused arrogance with breeding."
"I didn't push him!" Julian pleaded, tears finally leaking from the corners of his eyes, cutting tracks through the dust and sweat on his cheeks. "My mother acts out of control, you know how she is! She has been neurotic since my father died! Clara, please, let me speak to Evelyn. Let me see her for five minutes. If I can just look into her eyes, she will understand!"
"Evelyn is on an aircraft to Zurich," Clara replied cleanly. "She is currently reallocating the thirty-million-dollar endowment she had set aside for your clean-energy laboratory. It will now be donated to the Baltimore Maritime Apprenticeship Fund. In her father's name."
Victoria collapsed into an armchair, clutching her chest, breathing in ragged, shallow gasps. "Julian... my jewelry safe. The safe in the master suite. Get the diamonds. Get the family heirlooms."
One of the men with Clara opened his metal briefcase and produced an electronic tablet.
"Every item in the master suite safe was inventoried when Vance Capital restructured its mezzanine financing in 2021," the man stated without emotion. "The heirlooms were sold to a private trust in Liechtenstein two years ago to keep your yacht operational, Mrs. Vance. The only items currently in that safe are costume replicas. The real stones are already in Miss Sterling’s family vault."
Victoria turned to her son, horror contorting her features. "Julian? What is he talking about? My emeralds? My mother’s sapphire choker?"
Julian couldn't look her in the eye. He stared down at his bare feet, his wedding dress shoes discarded by the door. "We needed the cash, Mother. Three years ago. You wanted to host the Monaco Grand Prix party. You said we had to look solvent."

Clara turned around and walked toward the grand doorway. "Two hours, Julian. The locks will be changed at 4:00 AM sharp."
