Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Dynasty

While Arthur and Logan Vance were being processed into the basement holding cells of the Fort Meade Provost Marshal's headquarters, chaos had erupted at the Vance ancestral estate in Potomac, Maryland.
The sprawling, four-story colonial mansion stood on eight acres of private, gated woodland. For fifty years, this house had been the epicenter of military aristocracy. It was where four-star generals drank scotch by the limestone fireplace, where defense contractors negotiated multi-million-dollar drone deals over golf weekends, and where Eleanor Vance held her annual charity galas for "fallen soldiers' families"—events that were ninety percent vanity and ten percent photo opportunities.
Now, Eleanor Vance stood in the center of the grand foyer, her manicured fingers trembling so violently she dropped her smartphone onto the polished Italian marble.
"Pick it up, Chloe! Pick it up right now!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria.
Chloe, her younger daughter, was on her knees, desperately gathering papers from the desk in Arthur’s home office. "Mom! Senator Higgins isn't answering! His chief of staff said he’s in an emergency executive session and not taking calls! The line went dead!"
"Try Admiral Ross! Try Secretary Miller!" Eleanor screamed, pacing frantically across the oriental rug. "Someone has to stop this! That vile little guttersnipe has somehow manipulated Holloway! She forged those documents! She's trying to ruin us! Do you hear me?! She’s a jealous, psychotic orphan!"
Suddenly, the massive double oak doors of the foyer shuddered.
*THUD! THUD! THUD!*
"Federal agents! Open the door!" a booming voice amplified by a megaphone cut through the double-paned glass.
Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "They wouldn't dare. This is private property! This is the home of a flag officer!"
Before she could finish her sentence, a hydraulic breaching ram shattered the master deadbolts with a deafening CRACK!
The double doors flew open. A dozen federal marshals in tactical armor, flanked by agents from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), swarmed into the foyer with shotguns and assault rifles raised.
"Down on the floor! Both of you! Hands where we can see them!" the lead agent barked, flashing a gold badge.
"How dare you?!" Eleanor screeched, backing away toward the curved staircase. "Do you know who lives here?! My husband is Brigadier General Arthur Vance! I will have your badges by midnight! Get out of my house!"
"Ma'am, get down on your knees, or we will take you to the ground!" an agent yelled, stepping forward with zip-cuffs.
From the shattered doorway, a solitary figure walked into the foyer.
The agents immediately parted, lowering their weapons slightly in deference.
It was Victoria.
She was still dressed in her dark field uniform, a combat belt strapped to her waist, her hair pulled back into a severe, utilitarian ponytail. In her hand, she held an electronic tablet displaying a live financial dashboard.
"Hello, Eleanor," Victoria said mildly, her boots echoing on the marble floor. "Chloe. Nice to see you looking so active."
Chloe burst into tears, huddling against the base of the staircase. "Victoria... please! We didn't do anything! We didn't know about Dad's business! You know me, we went shopping together!"
"We went shopping together because your father ordered me to carry your bags, Chloe," Victoria said evenly. "And while I was carrying your bags, you were bragging to your sorority sisters on speakerphone about how your brother had married a 'docile house-pet' who would never touch the Vance inheritance."
Victoria tapped the tablet screen twice.
"Speaking of inheritance... this house was purchased in 2018 using funds from a dummy corporation called 'Vanguard Logistics LLC.' That LLC was funded entirely through diverted Pentagon transport subsidies meant for armored vehicle maintenance in Iraq. In twenty minutes, this entire property is being seized under the Federal Asset Forfeiture Act."
"You lie!" Eleanor spat, her eyes wild with aristocratic rage. "This is our family home! My grandfather built this estate! You can't take it! You’re nothing! A nobody! Logan only married you out of pity because you had no family, no money, and no future!"
Victoria walked over to the grand piano, picking up a silver-framed photograph of Logan in his pristine dress uniform. She looked at it for a long second, then tilted her fingers.
The frame slipped, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred pieces.
"Logan didn't marry me out of pity, Eleanor," Victoria said, stepping over the broken glass. "Logan married me because I made myself the perfect target. I needed to know how deep the rot went. I needed to see which politicians were coming to your Christmas parties, which foreign attachés were slipping brown envelopes into Arthur’s humidor, and how much of our country’s defense secrets your family was willing to sell to keep your silver polished."
Victoria stopped in front of Eleanor. The older woman tried to hold her head high, but she was trembling so violently that her knees buckled, forcing her to sink onto the bottom step of the staircase.
"Your jewelry," Victoria said softly.
"What?" Eleanor gasped.
"Take it off," Victoria commanded. "The diamond necklace. The Cartier watch. The platinum earrings. Every single piece was purchased through Arthur’s private Swiss account. It's government property now."
"I won't! You can't humiliate me like this!"
Two female federal marshals immediately stepped forward, grabbing Eleanor’s wrists with professional detachment. Within thirty seconds, the pearls, the diamonds, and the platinum rings were stripped from her skin and sealed in clear evidence bags.
"Victoria... please," Chloe sobbed, clinging to her mother’s dress. "Where are we supposed to go? We don't have anywhere else!"
Victoria looked down at them with eyes as cold as a frozen lake.
"There’s a women’s shelter four blocks from the Navy Yard," Victoria said. "Arthur used to vote against funding it every budget cycle. I suggest you walk quickly before it gets dark."

She turned on her heel and walked out of the ruined mansion, the sound of Eleanor’s frantic wails fading beneath the heavy drone of federal evidence trucks pulling into the driveway.
