Chapter 2 - The Sound of Venom

The voice blasting through the high-end Bose speakers was undeniably Chloe Vance’s, but stripped of the delicate, breathy lilt she used when addressing society charity boards or whispering sweet nothings into Marcus’s ear. This voice was raspy, sharp, and soaked in raw, unfiltered malice.

*"—God, Julian, stop stressing! Marcus is an absolute spineless idiot. I’ve had him wrapped around my finger since the third week we started dating."*

A synchronized wave of horrified gasps rippled through the rows of guests. Chloe froze on the marble altar. The color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her skin looking like wet chalk. Her hands shook so violently that the gold microphone slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the marble stones with a dull thud.

The audio recording continued without mercy. The sound of a lighter clicking, followed by an exhale of smoke, came through the speakers with horrifying clarity.

Julian’s recorded voice replied through the system: *"Yeah, well, he’s an idiot who happens to control eighty million dollars in trust assets. But his old man isn't stupid, Chloe. David Sterling has been looking at our family’s books. What happens if he forces Marcus to sign a real ironclad prenup before the ceremony?"*

*"He won’t,"* Chloe’s recorded laugh crackled through the speakers, cold and dripping with condescension. *"Because I made Marcus replace his family’s corporate lawyers with my guy, Bradley. The prenup Marcus thinks he’s signing gives him full autonomy over his marital assets. The real document we’re sliding into the signing folder assigns full power of attorney to me the second we hit the registry. Once that ring is on his finger, I own him. We’ll drain the offshore dividend accounts within forty-eight hours to cover your debt to the Castiglione cartel."*

In the third row, three prominent corporate attorneys dropped their programs. Marcus Sterling looked as if someone had driven a wooden stake directly through his chest. He staggered back until his shoulder hit the floral archway, crushing white roses beneath his weight.

"No..." Marcus breathed, his voice barely a squeak. "Chloe... that’s... that’s not..."

David stood beside the DJ booth, his eyes blazing, watching the slaughter. He didn't say a word. He let the tape speak.

Julian’s recorded voice spoke again: *"And what about the old lady? Eleanor won't let Marcus just hand over the family foundation. She manages the philanthropic trust."*

A vile, dismissive sneer could be heard in Chloe’s voice. *"Eleanor? That pathetic, sentimental simpleton? Please. After the wedding, we isolate her completely. I’ve already spoken to Dr. Harrison at Greenbriar Manor. A few staged falls, a couple of documented 'memory lapses' that we whisper into Marcus’s ear, and we have her legally declared incompetent by Christmas. Once the old hag is locked away in private memory care, David will be too broken to fight us. We bleed them dry, Julian. Every single cent."*

The audio cut out with a sharp click.

Dead silence descended upon the five hundred guests.

The afternoon breeze suddenly felt like an arctic gale. Nobody moved. Nobody coughed. The society ladies who had spent the last two hours gossiping about floral arrangements now stared at the bride with sheer, unadulterated revulsion. The Vance family’s prestigious façade had just been peeled away like rotting wallpaper, exposing the greedy, criminal parasites underneath.

Chloe stood on the altar, her chest heaving violently beneath her ten-thousand-dollar French lace bodice. Her carefully constructed universe was crashing down around her ears.

"It’s an AI fake!" Chloe suddenly shrieked, her voice turning completely hysterical. She lunged forward, nearly tripping on her own cathedral-length train as she pointed an accusatory finger at David. "David generated that! It’s a deepfake! He hates me because I come from old money and he’s just a ruthless, self-made thug! Marcus, look at me! Marcus! You know me! You know my heart! Tell them it’s fake!"

She threw her arms toward Marcus, trying to grab his hands.

Marcus flinched away violently, his face white, his eyes wide and hollow. "You... you were going to put my mother in an institution?"

"Marcus, baby, it’s a lie! It’s not real!" Chloe cried, crocodile tears instantly welling in her eyes, her manipulative switch flipping instantly from rage to victimhood. "Someone hacked my phone! They used voice synthesizers! I love your mother! I would never, ever hurt Eleanor!"

From her seat in the front row, Eleanor slowly raised her head. The black mud was drying on her cheeks. The silver embroidery of her handmade lilies was ruined forever. She looked at Chloe—not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying pity.

"You laughed, Chloe," Eleanor said softly. Her voice wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the vineyard, it cut deeper than any scream. "When Julian shoved me into the dirt, you didn't look surprised. You laughed. And you told me I was a clumsy old cow."

Julian Vance’s face turned scarlet. Realizing the financial scam was dead, the arrogant brat retreated to raw, petulant violence.

"She fell, you stupid old bitch!" Julian snarled, stepping down the altar steps toward Eleanor with his fists clenched. "You tripped over your own damn feet because you’re a senile, pathetic—"

He never finished the sentence.

David Sterling closed the distance across the grass in three monstrous strides. Before Julian could even raise an arm, David’s left hand shot out like an iron clamp, grabbing the younger man by the throat and slamming him violently backward against the stone balustrade of the terrace.

The sound of the impact rattled the stone.

"Say another word to my wife," David whispered, his face inches from Julian’s terrified, bulging eyes, "and they will be identifying your dental records from the bottom of the lake."

"Dad! Stop! Stop it!" Marcus yelled, finally breaking out of his paralysis, stumbling down the stairs. "Dad, don't kill him!"

David released Julian with a shove of utter disgust. The younger man crumpled to his knees on the stone, coughing, clutching his bruised windpipe, all of his arrogant bravado instantly reduced to trembling cowardice.

David turned to his son, his eyes like burning coals.

"You're worried about him?" David’s voice shook with pure disappointment. "Your mother is covered in dirt and blood, Marcus. Your bride-to-be just laid out her five-year plan to rob you blind and put your mother in a padded room. And you are worried about the coward who shoved her?"

Marcus froze, looking between his furious father, his bruised mother, and the frantic, snarling woman he was supposed to marry in twelve minutes.

"Dad... I didn't know..." Marcus choked out, tears finally breaking past his eyes. "I swear to God, I didn't know!"

"Of course you didn't know," David said, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet, devastating contempt. "Because you were too weak to look. But the recording isn't the only thing I brought to this wedding, Marcus. Not by a long shot."

David reached into his suit jacket once more, pulling out a thick, manila envelope bound with heavy red security tape.

"Call your security, Chloe," David said coldly. "Because the police are already at the front gates."
