Chapter 4 - The Vultures Circle

The third-floor executive suite of Blackwood Manor was a sanctuary of silence, far removed from the tense, paranoid atmosphere choking the lower levels. Clara closed the heavy oak door behind her and locked it, letting out a long, ragged exhale that shook her entire frame.
She stripped off the damp bathrobe, took a quick, scalding-hot shower to wash away the smell of chlorinated lake water, and dressed in a tailored charcoal pantsuit she kept in the suite for corporate emergencies. She pulled her hair back into a sleek, professional bun. In the bathroom mirror, her reflection looked exhausted, with dark shadows under her eyes and bruised knees from scraping against the bottom of the pool.
Yet beneath the physical toll was an icy, focused resolve.
Clara Vance had grown up in an environment where survival meant staying two moves ahead. Her father had been a municipal dockworker who spent his life being discarded by powerful men in expensive suits. When Clara landed the job with Arthur Blackwood, she had promised herself she would never be intimidated by wealth. Arthur had respected that quality in her above all else. In a world full of sycophants who lied to him, Clara had always told him the brutal, unvarnished truth.
She unlocked the small biometric wall safe behind the suite's wardrobe and retrieved the item Arthur had requested: the black leather-bound ledger.
This was not a financial ledger. It was Arthur’s private journal of internal assets, confidential account numbers, and, most importantly, the handwritten draft of his newest codicil.
Clara held the book tightly against her chest and made her way down the dimly lit hallway toward the east wing, where Arthur’s private master study was located.
As she turned the corner near the grand portrait gallery, she heard muffled, furious voices coming from the library. Clara paused in the shadows of the velvet curtains, her breath held.
"You’re an idiot, Julian! An absolute, reckless idiot!" Evelyn’s voice hissed through the cracked mahogany doors.
"Me?! Why are you looking at me?!" Julian’s voice cracked with panic. "I didn't touch his damn chair! I was terrified he was going to look at the offshore accounts from the Singapore subsidiary! If he audits those books tomorrow morning, Carter, I’m ruined! I owe twelve million to the syndicate in Macau!"
"Keep your voice down!" Carter’s cold baritone cut in like a scalpel. "The entire house is wired with microphones, you fool. Do you think Arthur hasn't bugged his own estate?"
"We are running out of time," Evelyn whispered, her tone venomous. "Arthur was supposed to sign the final revision of the Blackwood Family Trust tomorrow at nine o'clock. If that document is executed, the charitable foundation takes control of sixty percent of the voting shares. We will be reduced to minority shareholders with zero operational authority! Everything our father built, handed over to a board of trustees run by outside bureaucrats!"
"And who do you think is slated to chair that foundation?" Carter asked, his voice dripping with malice. "The secretary."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot straight down Clara’s spine.
*Chair of the foundation?*
Arthur had never told her this. She knew he was restructuring his estate, but she had assumed her role would simply be administrative management. If Arthur intended to place her in charge of the foundation that controlled sixty percent of Blackwood Global Logistics, it meant he had effectively positioned Clara as the ultimate gatekeeper to the family's multi-billion-dollar empire.
And it painted a massive, glowing target directly on her back.
"She’s a nobody," Evelyn spat. "A stray dog he picked up off the street because she didn't flatter him. We should have had her removed months ago."
"It doesn't matter now," Carter replied, his voice chillingly pragmatic. "Arthur survived the water. That means plan A is dead. But Arthur is fragile. His heart took a massive shock tonight. Dr. Vance has him on beta-blockers and digitalis. If he experiences another… acute medical event before morning, the revised will remains unsigned. The original 2018 trust will stand. And Evelyn retains full power of attorney."
"What are you saying, Carter?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.
"I’m saying nobody sleeps tonight," Carter said coldly. "And before the sun comes up, this family will be secured. Permanently."
Clara took a slow, silent step backward, her pulse hammering in her ears. She slipped past the heavy curtains, turned the corner, and quickened her pace toward Arthur’s study.
The plunge into the pool was not an isolated act of desperation.
May you like
It was merely the opening move of an active, ongoing assassination attempt.
