Chapter 5 - The Midnight Wire

Julian rushed forward, slamming his fists onto the conference table. "What did you say?!"

"Check your phone, darling," Vanessa purred, tilting her head with chilling amusement. "Midnight was the deadline. The board authorized the emergency liquidity release yesterday based on the corporate resolutions you signed during our Christmas dinner in Aspen. Or did you forget what was buried inside those eighty pages of holiday tax filings?"

Julian violently yanked his smartphone from his tuxedo pocket. His thumb flew across the screen, accessing the Vance International executive portal.

His face turned gray. His knees buckled, and he collapsed back into the leather chair, staring at the glowing screen in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

"Two hundred and forty million dollars..." Julian gasped, his voice barely a squeak. "The reserve liquidity accounts... they’re zeroed out. Transferred to an offshore holding entity named *Ares Capital LLC*."

"Ares Capital is registered to Dominic Vance and Victor Cross," Vanessa said calmly, smoothing down her ruined satin skirt as if she were discussing a minor stock dividend over brunch. "By the time the banks open on Tuesday after the holiday, that money will be split into seventeen cryptocurrency wash accounts across three continents. Vance International is insolvent, Julian. You are the CEO of a bankrupt husk."

"You monster," I breathed, rising to my feet, my fingernails digging into the palms of my hands until I drew blood. "Arthur built that company with forty years of sweat and sacrifice. He treated your father like a brother before Victor tried to embezzle from our medical supply division!"

"Arthur was a hypocrite who thought he was God!" Vanessa snapped, her composure finally cracking into pure, unfiltered hatred. "He thought he could crush my family and walk away unscathed! My father spent ten years in federal prison because Arthur wouldn't falsify an audit report! Ten years! My mother died alone in a rented apartment while you two were drinking vintage wine in the Hamptons!"

"Your father was a thief, Vanessa!" I yelled back, stepping toe-to-toe with her. "And you are nothing more than a common murderer!"

"Call me whatever you want, Eleanor," Vanessa sneered, stepping toward the door. "The money is gone. Arthur is dead. And within forty-eight hours, the board will remove Julian, file for Chapter 11, and Dominic will buy back the Vance assets for pennies on the dollar. You have a thumb drive and a bottle of spilled wine. I have the entire Vance fortune."

She reached for the brass handle of the lounge door.

"Don't turn that handle, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, his voice entirely unbothered.

Vanessa paused, turning back with a haughty glare. "What are you going to do, Miller? Arrest me for broken glass? You haven't even tested that vial. My lawyer, Bradley Sterling, will have me out of holding before the sun comes up."

"Bradley Sterling won't be answering your calls tonight, Vanessa," a new voice echoed from the hallway outside.

The double doors swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a tailored navy pantsuit, flanked by two armed federal agents wearing jackets emblazoned with the letters **FBI**.

"Special Agent Sarah Chen, Financial Crimes and Counter-Terrorism Division," the woman announced, flashing a gold badge. "Vanessa Cross Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate grand larceny, and interstate distribution of regulated chemical weapons."

Vanessa's sneer froze on her face. Her hand dropped from the door handle.

"Federal... chemical weapons?" Vanessa stuttered.

"Thallium sulfate is classified as a Schedule 1 toxic chemical agent under federal homeland security guidelines," Agent Chen said coldly, stepping into the room while her agents advanced with stainless steel handcuffs. "Did you really think Arthur Vance only left one bottle behind?"

I stared at Agent Chen, completely stunned. Julian looked up from his phone, bewildered.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Arthur... Arthur contacted the FBI?"

Agent Chen looked at me with deep, professional respect. "Mrs. Vance, three weeks before your husband passed, he didn't just hide evidence in a wine bottle. He walked into our field office in lower Manhattan. He knew his body was shutting down. He knew he couldn't survive the poisoning. But he also knew that if he tipped his hand, Victor Cross and Dominic Vance would go underground and Julian would be targeted next."

Julian choked back a sob. "Dad... Dad knew he was dying, and he didn't run? He stayed to protect me?"

"Your father laid a three-year trap, Mr. Vance," Agent Chen revealed, turning her sharp gaze onto Vanessa. "He allowed the conspiracy to play out. He signed the corporate bylaws that allowed the emergency liquidity transfer to Ares Capital—because every single dollar of that two hundred and forty million was marked with federal electronic tracer algorithms."

Vanessa backed away until she hit the corner of the wall, trapped. "No... no, that's impossible. Dominic's hackers verified the routing codes!"

"Dominic's hackers were working with undercover FBI cyber operatives out of the Boston bureau," Agent Chen said with a devastating smile. "The moment that midnight transfer was executed five minutes ago, Ares Capital's offshore accounts were frozen by the Cayman Monetary Authority under an emergency federal warrant. Dominic Vance was arrested in his villa in St. Thomas twenty minutes ago."

Vanessa’s knees gave out. She slid down the wall, her expensive crimson dress collapsing around her like a puddle of fresh blood, her blond hair matted with cake and champagne.

"And as for your father, Victor Cross," Agent Chen added, motioning for her agents to step forward. "He was intercepted at JFK Airport forty-five minutes ago trying to board a private jet to Dubai."
