Chapter 5 - Whispers in Silk and Gold

The temperature inside the carriage house seemed to plummet ten degrees. Christian’s eyes narrowed, his gaze shifting sharply from Julian to Evelyn.

“What is he talking about, Evelyn?” Christian demanded, his voice losing its mocking cadence and sharpening into an ugly edge. “What Manhattan office?”

Evelyn backed away until her spine hit the reinforced glass wall of a server rack. Her breathing was rapid and shallow, her fingers clawing at the tattered silk of her designer gown. The haughty confidence that had sustained her during her confrontation with Maria Vance was entirely gone, replaced by the cornered terror of a double agent who had been caught by both sides.

“Evelyn,” Christian barked, taking an aggressive step toward her before a guard's rifle butt blocked his path. “Answer me! You told me you were at the bridal salon having your veil fitted yesterday afternoon!”

“She wasn't at the bridal salon,” Julian said, his voice calm, steady, and devastating. He walked over to the military laptop and tapped the spacebar once. The crimson screen minimized, revealing a background process running beneath the Aethelgard Protocol.

Julian pointed at a secondary script running in the command terminal.

“Christian, you spent five years hiding in Central America, planning this grand return,” Julian continued, circling the table like a predator observing two wounded animals in a pit. “You thought you recruited the perfect insider. A beautiful, ambitious young woman who could infiltrate my life, gain access to my private keys, and help you execute the transfer. But you forgot one crucial detail about people like Evelyn.”

Julian stopped right in front of Evelyn, looking down into her terrified eyes.

“A woman who will sell out an innocent family like the Vances for a percentage of an equity fund… will sell out anyone.”

Julian tapped a key on his phone, and the terminal monitor split into two windows. On the right side appeared a certified legal document bearing the official seal of Goldman & Rothschild Private Wealth Management.

At the top of the page, in bold lettering, was an agreement titled: **[AMENDED BENEFICIARY ASSIGNMENT: AETHELGARD EQUITY HOLDINGS]**.

Christian’s face twisted into an expression of raw disbelief. He leaned closer to the monitor, his eyes scanning the lines of legal text with frantic speed.

“No…” Christian muttered, his voice cracking. “No, that’s impossible.”

“It’s very possible,” Julian said coldly. “Yesterday afternoon, Evelyn visited Goldman & Rothschild. She utilized the administrative override tokens you provided her to access the Aethelgard parent trust. And using a forged signature—this time, *your* signature, Christian—she reassigned the sole beneficiary payout address.”

Julian turned to look at Christian’s pale, trembling face.

“The moment that clock hits midnight, Christian, two billion dollars won't be routing to your Cayman shell corporations. It will be routed directly to an offshore private account registered under the maiden name of Evelyn’s mother in Zurich. You weren't going to get half the empire, Christian. You were going to be left holding the smoking gun, penniless, while she boarded a private jet to Switzerland under a diplomatic passport.”

“YOU BITCH!”

Christian’s roar shook the walls of the bunker. He lunged at Evelyn with murderous fury, his hands outstretched to strangle her. The two tactical guards moved instantly, tackling Christian to the concrete floor. The impact was brutal; his head slammed against the hard surface, and his scotch glass, which he had carried all the way from the ballroom, finally shattered beneath his ribs.

“GET OFF ME!” Christian shrieked, thrashing against the guards like a rabid dog, his eyes bloodshot, veins bulging along his neck. “EVELYN, YOU VILE WHORE! I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING! I PULLED YOU OUT OF DEBT! I GAVE YOU THE KEYS TO THE STERLING EMPIRE!”

Evelyn slid down against the server rack, burying her face in her hands, weeping hysterically.

“I had to!” she screamed, her voice shrill and broken. “You were going to kill me, Christian! I know who you are! You killed that auditor in Belize, and you were going to eliminate me the second the money cleared! I had to protect myself!”

“You greedy parasite!” Christian spat, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead onto the gray floor. “I will skin you alive! I will tear your life apart!”

Julian watched the spectacle with absolute detachment. There was no joy on his face, no triumph. Only the cold, weary realization of how cheap human life could become when measured against a ledger of billions.

He looked down at his watch.

**[TIME REMAINING: 19 MINUTES, 42 SECONDS]**

“Are you two finished?” Julian asked quietly.

The icy authority in his voice silenced both of them. Christian lay pinned to the floor, panting heavily, glare fixed on Evelyn with murderous hatred. Evelyn trembled in the corner, her makeup completely ruined, looking less like a billionaire's bride and more like a ruined convict awaiting sentencing.

Julian walked back over to the central console.

“Now that we have established that both of you are treasonous, greedy sociopaths who deserve each other,” Julian said, pulling a custom, encrypted flash drive from his own pocket, “let’s talk about what happens next.”

Julian looked down at Christian.

“You said earlier that if I touched this terminal without the cipher, the transfer would execute automatically and purge the logs. But that was based on the assumption that you were the only one who understood the Aethelgard network architecture.”

Julian inserted his drive into the secondary USB port on the terminal.

The red progress bar froze.

Christian’s eyes widened. “What… what did you just do?”

“Who do you think built the original banking protocols that Aethelgard was running on, Christian?” Julian asked, a faint, terrifying smirk appearing on his lips. “You stole the blueprint from our father’s server five years ago. But our father didn't write that code. I did.”
