Chapter 6 - Retribution in the Kitchen

The sharp, deafening *crack* of Mark's Glock shattered the kitchen air.

The mercenary aiming at Johnson dropped instantly, clutching his shattered kneecap, his weapon clattering across the marble floor.

"MARK!" Victoria shrieked, ducking behind the kitchen island.

The second mercenary spun, bringing his submachine gun up, but Mark was already moving. He fired three rapid shots into the man's tactical vest. The kinetic impact slammed the gunman backward into the granite countertop, knocking the wind from his lungs and sending his weapon spinning out of reach.

Dr. Hayes dropped his medical briefcase, screaming, and scrambled backward toward the shattered patio doors.

"Johnson! Get Lily down to the basement! NOW!" Mark yelled, advancing through the smoke, his gun leveled steadily at the island where Victoria was hiding.

Agent Johnson didn't waste a second. He scooped Lily into his arms, shielding her tiny head with his broad chest, and sprinted through the corridor, vanishing down the stairs into the fortified subterranean vault.

"Daddy!" Lily’s scream echoed down the hall, but it was safe now—she was behind two feet of reinforced steel with Frank.

Mark stood alone in the center of the kitchen. The fallen mercenaries were incapacitated, groaning on the floor. Outside, the wailing sirens of twenty police interceptors tore through the night, their blue and red lights flashing across the high ceiling through the shattered glass doors.

"Come out, Victoria," Mark said. His voice was deathly low. "It’s over."

Behind the island, a slow, bitter laughter began to rise.

Victoria stood up slowly, her hands raised, but her face was twisted into a grotesque mask of hatred and defiance. Blood smeared across her cheek from a glass cut, her blonde hair hung in wild clumps, and her eyes burned with sociopathic fury.

"You think you’ve won, Mark?" she spat, venom dripping from every syllable. "You think you're the hero of this story?"

"I think you’re a parasite who is going to spend the rest of her miserable life in a maximum-security federal facility," Mark said, not lowering his weapon an inch.

"You fool!" she screamed, taking a step closer, completely unbothered by the gun aimed at her chest. "Look at yourself! You were so obsessed with your software empire, your hedge funds, your board meetings, that you didn't even notice your own wife was missing from her grave! I lived in this house for two years, sleeping in your bed, spending your money, and you never questioned a single thing!"

Mark’s jaw tightened, the truth of her words stinging more than any bullet could. "Why? Why Eleanor? Why Lily?"

"Because she had everything I deserved!" Victoria raged, tears of raw jealousy finally breaking through. "We grew up together! Eleanor was the heiress to the Kensington railroad fortune! She got the Ivy League pedigree! She got the perfect family! She got *you*! And what did I get? Leftovers! Handouts! Pity!"

She pointed violently toward the basement stairs.

"I didn't kill her because killing her would have put the trust into probate for ten years! The trustees required her physical biometric signature or a direct legal transfer to an approved guardian on Lily’s eighth birthday! I kept her alive just long enough to drain every last cent! And once tomorrow passed... I was going to turn off that IV, pave over that cellar floor, and take Lily to Monaco where you would never see her again!"

"You're sick," Mark whispered.

"I’m ambitious!" she screamed. "And you—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the front entrance doors of the mansion were breached with a deafening crash.

"POLICE! STATE TACTICAL TEAM! NOBODY MOVE! WEAPONS ON THE GROUND!"

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers poured into the kitchen, laser sights painting the walls, their weapons locking onto Victoria and the fallen gunmen.

Mark slowly decocked his weapon, dropped it onto the counter, and raised his hands. "I'm Mark Vance. Property owner. Suspects are contained. The victim is in the sub-basement with my security chief. We need trauma medics down there immediately."

Victoria looked around at the wall of black tactical gear, the flashing crimson lights reflecting off the broken glass, and the cold, unyielding eyes of the man she had tried to destroy.

For the first time, she realized there was no escape. No Swiss account. No private jet. No millions.

Only a cold, empty cell.
