Chapter 4 - The First Tremor

By seven o'clock that evening, the grand driveway of Sterling Crest Manor was supposed to be a glowing corridor of luxury sedans, sports cars, and society elite arriving for the Annual Midsummer Sterling Gala.
Instead, it was a battleground.
Evelyn Sterling stood in the grand foyer, her face heavily caked in foundation to cover the dark red bruise blooming across her left cheek. Her diamonds clinked nervously against her neck as she screamed at the head of the catering staff.
"You cannot pack up the food!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the high limestone walls. "The invitations were sent to two hundred of the most prominent families in the tri-state area! The Mayor is attending! You will serve the dinner, and you will be paid on Monday!"
The head caterer, a burly French-American man who had dealt with erratic billionaires for three decades, didn't even blink. He checked his tablet and signaled to his crew, who were actively wheeling large silver chafing dishes back out to their refrigerated trucks.
"Mrs. Sterling," the caterer said, his voice dripping with icy professionalism. "Our contract states clearly: payment must be verified four hours prior to service. Your corporate guarantee was terminated by Apex Sovereign Capital at four-thirty. I called their legal office directly. A gentleman named Mr. Pendelton informed me that any attempt to charge services to their accounts would be treated as wire fraud."
The caterer stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "I have twenty staff members to pay. Unless you have eighty thousand dollars in cash or a certified cashier's check right now, we are leaving. Immediately."
"Eighty thousand?!" Evelyn gasped, grabbing the banister for support. "For cold cuts and champagne?!"
"High-grade filet mignon, Beluga caviar, and vintage Krug, madam. Things you clearly cannot afford." The caterer signaled his men. "Pack it all up. Leave the ice sculptures; they’ll melt by morning anyway."
"Wait! Julian!" Evelyn screamed hysterically, turning toward the parlor. "Julian, write him a personal check! Write it from your investment fund!"
Julian stumbled out of the parlor, his tie undone, his hair disheveled, holding a half-empty glass of whiskey. His eyes were bloodshot, staring wildly at his mother.
"There is no investment fund, Mother!" Julian barked, his voice cracking in absolute panic. "Don’t you understand? Apex didn't just freeze the trust! They filed an emergency injunction! My personal accounts... my brokerage accounts... even my debit card for five dollars at the gas station—everything is locked! The bank says I’m under federal compliance review!"
Victoria ran down the curved staircase, sobbing hysterically, waving her phone. "Mother! The boutique in Manhattan just canceled my Paris Fashion Week fitting! They said my deposit was refunded and my account is terminated! And look out the window! LOOK OUT THE DAMN WINDOW!"
Evelyn rushed to the tall foyer windows and pulled back the heavy silk drapes.
Outside, the grand wrought-iron gates were wide open. But it wasn't the guests arriving.
Three massive, heavy-duty commercial flatbed recovery trucks from Manhattan Prestige Towing were idling in the circular driveway, their amber lights flashing against the stately facade of the mansion. Men in high-visibility vests were already hooking steel cables to Julian’s metallic blue Aston Martin and Evelyn’s custom pearl-white Bentley.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Evelyn shrieked, running out onto the grand portico into the cool evening air. "Stop that! That car was a gift from my son! Stop touching my property!"
The lead recovery agent, a stone-faced man with a clipboard, walked toward her, holding out a sheaf of laminated documents.
"Mrs. Evelyn Sterling?" he asked neutrally.
"Yes! And I am calling the governor this instant!"
"Go right ahead, ma'am," the agent said, handing her the papers. "These vehicles are registered to Sovereign Fleet Management, a subsidiary of Apex Sovereign. The primary lessee has terminated the corporate vehicle program effective immediately due to breach of conduct and non-payment. We have court-certified recovery orders signed by the state magistrate two hours ago."
"Breach of conduct?!" Evelyn screamed, her face contorting in madness. "I am Evelyn Sterling! My husband built this town!"
"Ma'am, I don't care if your husband built the moon," the agent replied coldly. "You don't own these cars. You never did. Winch them up, boys!"
The high-pitched whine of hydraulic winches tore through the peaceful Greenwich evening. The Aston Martin groaned as its tires dragged across the gravel, pulled upward onto the tilted flatbed.
At that exact moment, the first set of headlights from the arriving gala guests turned into the long driveway.
It was Judge Harold Vance (no relation to Elena, but a lifelong social rival of the Sterlings) and his wife, driving their vintage Rolls-Royce. The car crawled to a halt behind the flashing tow trucks, its headlights illuminating Evelyn Sterling standing on her porch in a silk robe, covered in grease from the afternoon, screaming like a lunatic while her luxury fleet was dragged away like cheap scrap metal.
More cars began to pile up behind the Judge—wealthy neighbors, country club patrons, Wall Street titans. All of them rolled down their tinted windows, their faces lit by the glow of the amber recovery lights.
Whispers erupted instantly.
"Is that... are they repossessing her Bentley?"
"Look at her face! Is she bleeding?"
"Where is the catering tent? Why are the gates open?"
Victoria stood in the doorway, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "We’re ruined. We’re utterly, completely ruined."
Julian collapsed onto the stone steps, dropping his whiskey glass, which shattered into a hundred sparkling pieces against the gravel.
Evelyn stood frozen under the glaring headlights of her peers, the icy reality finally penetrating her thick skull. Elena had not made an empty threat. Elena had not thrown an emotional tantrum.
Elena was systematically, clinically stripping them naked before the entire world.
May you like
And the nightmare had only just begun.
