Chapter 6 - The Golden Boy’s Arrival

Ten minutes later, the rain showed no signs of stopping, but outside the glass doors of The Gilded Bean, a sleek, black Maybach pulled smoothly against the curb.

A young man stepped out under a massive umbrella held by his private chauffeur. Julian Sterling was twenty-eight years old, the epitome of Ivy League privilege, dressed in a bespoke charcoal cashmere overcoat, handmade Italian leather shoes, and wearing a Rolex that gleamed even under the dreary grey skies. His hair was meticulously styled, his posture oozing effortless entitlement.

He glanced at the 'Closed' sign on the café door, an arrogant smirk curling on his lips. He straightened his silk tie, took a deep, dramatic breath, and adjusted his expression into one of frantic, breathless concern. He was preparing for the performance of his life.

Julian pushed through the revolving doors.

"Brenda!" Julian called out in a voice vibrating with rehearsed anguish. "Brenda, thank God! The police radio reported an elderly woman matching my grandmother’s description was seen near this block—she’s had a terrible psychotic break, she’s lost, she’s—"

Julian froze.

The door swung shut behind him with a heavy, final *thud*.

The café was not empty.

At the center table, sitting beneath the warm glow of an Edison bulb, sat Eleanor Sterling. She was still wearing Clara’s oversized navy-blue thrift coat, sipping steaming peppermint tea from a pristine white porcelain cup. Standing beside her was Clara, holding a silver tray, her expression solemn.

To the left stood Arthur Cross, his legal team, and four armed members of the Sterling executive protection detail.

And on the floor, kneeling in handcuffs with mascara streaming down her coffee-stained face, was Brenda Holloway.

Julian’s face turned an astonishing shade of ash grey. The rehearsed panic died in his throat, replaced by a suffocating, paralyzing horror.

"G-Grandmother?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a high, prepubescent squeak. "You're... you're safe. Thank God! I was looking everywhere for you—"

"Save your breath, Julian," Eleanor said without looking up from her tea. Her voice was remarkably steady, devoid of the grandfatherly affection she had showered upon him for almost three decades. "You look ridiculous when you lie. You always have. You inherited your father’s cowardice and your mother’s lack of imagination."

Julian’s eyes darted wildly across the room. He looked at Arthur Cross, who glared back with open, predatory disgust. He looked at Brenda, who looked away, unable to meet his eyes.

"Arthur, what is the meaning of this?" Julian tried to pivot, his voice turning shrill and indignant. "Why is my grandmother sitting in rags in a locked café? Why are there armed men here? As the vice-chair of the Sterling Trust, I demand—"

"You are no longer the vice-chair of anything, Julian," Arthur interrupted coldly. "At 12:15 PM, utilizing emergency executive authority under Article 9 of the family charter, Mrs. Sterling stripped you of all corporate titles, revoked your power of attorney, frozen your trust accounts, and terminated your access to every family estate."

"You can't do that!" Julian shouted, taking a frantic step forward. Instantly, two security officers stepped into his path, their hands resting firmly on their concealed holsters. "I have rights! I am a Sterling! Everything you have belongs to me!"

"Nothing belongs to a matricide," Eleanor said, finally setting down her cup with a gentle, terrifying *clink*.
