Chapter 11 - VANESSA’S LETTER

Vanessa did not contact Grace for eight years.
Court order first.
Then choice.
At twelve, Grace received no letters.
At sixteen, Vanessa’s attorney asked Richard if Vanessa could send one.
Richard wanted no.
Grace’s therapist asked:
“Does Grace get to decide?”
Yes.
Grace knew broad story.
She chose to receive.
Vanessa wrote:
I sprayed you because I wanted your father to react. I told myself the foam would not seriously hurt you. That did not make it safe. I used your fear as a tool.
Specific.
Then:
I was having an affair with Derek. Martin wanted a corporate delay. I wanted leverage in my marriage. Those are adult explanations, not excuses.
Then:
You did nothing to cause it.
Grace stopped.
“Did she love me?”
Richard:
“I don’t know.”
“Did she ever?”
“I think she cared sometimes. What she did was still wrong.”
Grace read later.
Vanessa admitted jealousy of Amelia.
resentment of Grace.
greed.
fear Richard would divorce her.
desire for enhanced settlement.
No request forgiveness.
Final:
If you never want to hear from me again, I will respect that.
Grace kept letter in therapist office initially.
At eighteen, took copy.
No response.
At twenty-three, she requested mediated meeting.
Why?
Questions.
Vanessa had completed sentence, probation, and worked in nonprofit event planning? Could seem redemption. Let's say administrative job unrelated to children or security.
She had remarried? Maybe no need.
Meeting.
Grace:
“Did you know camera was there?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Martin was watching?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he wanted to use Dad’s reaction?”
“Yes.”
“Did you want me hurt?”
“No.”
“You sprayed my face.”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
“So answer again.”
“I did not want permanent injury. I was willing to hurt and terrify you. That is still harm.”
Better.
“Why did you laugh?” Actually Derek laughed, Vanessa furious. Fine.
“Why was Derek there?”
“Because he installed device and was supposed to provoke your father.”
“Were you going to leave Dad?”
“I thought I might after the settlement.”
“Did you love him?”
“Yes. And I betrayed him.”
No simplification.
Grace:
“Do you expect relationship?”
“No.”
Meeting ends no hug.
Grace says:
“I don’t want contact.”
Vanessa respects.
Finite answers.
No more villain.
Derek never requests contact.
Martin no.
Thomas no.
Grace no curiosity about them.
The twelfth chapter would follow Richard’s second marriage and boundaries.
He had to avoid turning every future partner into potential Vanessa.
Security alone cannot replace trust.
He met Sarah Monroe, museum curator.
She had no interest corporate wealth.
But Richard’s test was not “does she want money?”
It was whether he could disclose his fear and allow a relationship without secret surveillance of his own.
He nearly made mistake:
asked security to run excessive background check beyond consent.
Marcus challenged.
Richard canceled.
Growth.
Let's write.
The mediated meeting was arranged only after Grace requested it. Vanessa’s attorney did not contact Grace directly, and Richard did not sit in the room. Grace had her own therapist and counsel available, then decided what she wanted to ask.
That structure turned an encounter that once would have been controlled by adults into one controlled by Grace.
