Chapter 3 - Blood Money and Broken Promises

The rain outside intensified, hammering against the leaded library windows like a barrage of small stones. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocating. Chloe remained on the floor, her designer dress ruined, mascara running in dark rivers down her hollowed cheeks. The arrogance that had sustained her for decades had completely evaporated, replaced by the jagged, erratic panic of a trapped animal.

Damian stood behind the mahogany desk, stone-faced. In front of him, the contents of the safe were laid out in chronological order. He had brought Elena back into the library after the estate physician arrived to tend to her wounds. Elena now sat in a wingback leather chair, her shoulder tightly bound and a sterile white bandage taped over her brow.

"Start from the beginning, Elena," Damian said quietly, his voice dangerously even. "How did you find this?"

Elena took a slow, painful breath, her hand resting on the brown leather folder. "Two weeks ago, Frank Higgins came to my community clinic. He didn't come for medicine, Damian. He came because he was being evicted from his home."

Damian looked up, his jaw clenching. "Frank? He gave Dad thirty-five years of his life."

"He gave your father everything," Elena said, her voice trembling with emotion. "Ten years ago, when the company was collapsing, Frank sold his late wife’s jewelry and took a second mortgage to put up $150,000. He told me the other thirty workers did the same. Your father had signed a handwritten covenant on Vance Global letterhead, promising them that when the restructuring succeeded, their equity would guarantee them pensions for life."

Elena tapped the yellowed documents.

"Three months ago, Frank went to Vance Global's corporate headquarters to ask about his retirement dividends. He was seventy-one years old, Damian. His knees are gone, his lungs are damaged from working the shipyards. He was met at the front desk by corporate security and a team of lawyers representing *Aegis Holdings*. They told him his agreement was null and void—that he had signed a release of claims eight years ago."

"He never signed a release," Damian stated, looking over at Chloe.

"Of course he didn't!" Elena's eyes flashed with anger. "Frank showed me the paperwork they sent him. It was a forgery. A crude, digital reproduction of his signature. Frank knew Sarah had been an auditor before she married you. He didn't know Sarah was dead... he’d been living isolated in New Jersey. When he found out what happened to Sarah, he broke down crying in my clinic. He said, *'Miss Elena, your sister was the only one who ever listened to us. A week before she died, she told me she was going to fix it.'*"

Elena looked straight at Chloe, who refused to meet her gaze, staring blankly at the Persian rug.

"I started digging," Elena continued, turning to Damian. "I didn't tell you because... God help me, Damian, I didn't know who to trust. Vance Global is an empire. You were always away, expanding into Europe and Asia, building the fleet. Meanwhile, Chloe was running the domestic holding trusts. I used Sarah’s old encrypted cloud backup that she had left on an external hard drive at my apartment years ago. It had an algorithmic key that matched the brass key."

"Where did you get the physical key?" Damian asked, glancing at the small piece of metal on the desk.

"Sarah mailed it to me," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Three days before the hit-and-run. It came in a padded envelope with no return address, just a note: *'If anything happens to me, Elena, look behind the 1894 atlas. Don't let Chloe find it.'* I was so overwhelmed with grief after Sarah died... I locked the key in my safety deposit box and tried to forget. I thought it was paranoia. But when Frank came to me... I knew."

Elena touched her bruised shoulder, wincing. "I came here today when I knew you were flying back. I thought I could slip in, get the documents from the library vault while Chloe was supposed to be at the Met Gala, and hand them directly to you. But Chloe had canceled her plans. She was waiting for me."

"Because Kane warned me!" Chloe suddenly spat out from the floor, her head jerking upward. "Marcus Kane monitors the digital registries! The moment Elena accessed Sarah’s old offshore trust files, an alert tripped at Kane's firm! Did you really think you could outsmart high-tier corporate counsel, Elena? You're a nurse! A pathetic, low-income clinic worker!"

Damian moved around the desk with alarming speed. He grabbed Chloe by the lapels of her torn blouse, lifting her several inches off the floor until her toes barely brushed the carpet.

"Marcus Kane," Damian growled, his face inches from hers. "The senior partner at Kane & Sterling. Our chief external legal counsel."

"He’s not just our counsel, Damian," Chloe sneered, a twisted, desperate smile stretching across her bloody lips. "He's the architect! Who do you think created the Aegis shell company? Who do you think orchestrated the offshore buyouts? Dad was soft! He wanted to treat common laborers like family! Kane showed me the reality: thirty-one workers holding 15% equity meant billions of dollars leaving our family's control over fifty years. Billions!"

"It wasn't our money to keep!" Damian roared, shaking her violently. "They saved the company! Without their money, Vance Global would have been liquidated by creditors before I even graduated business school! Dad made a promise!"

"Dad is dead!" Chloe screamed back. "And Sarah is dead! And if you don't burn those files right now, Damian, Vance Global will be dead by sunrise!"

Damian dropped her unceremoniously back onto the floor. "What are you talking about?"

Chloe laughed—a hollow, hysterical sound that sent shivers down Elena’s spine. "You think Kane and I just kept that money in a bank account? We leveraged the Aegis assets to secure a $2.4 billion hostile takeover bid for Pacific Maritime. The final funding closes tomorrow at 9:00 AM on Wall Street. If the federal authorities sniff even a hint of fraud in the Aegis ledger, the secondary lenders will trigger the default covenants! Vance Global will be forced into immediate bankruptcy! You will lose every ship, every port, every penny!"

Chloe leaned forward, her eyes wide, pleading now. "Don't you see, Damian? We are in too deep! If I go down, the empire goes down with me! Sarah died for nothing if you throw it all away now! We have to bury this!"

Damian stared at his sister, disgusted by the sheer depth of her rot.

"Sarah didn't die for an empire, Chloe," Damian said, his voice deadly cold. "She died because she had a soul. Something you clearly sold a long time ago."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a direct, private line.

"Who are you calling?" Chloe gasped, scrambling backward. "Damian, who are you calling?!"

Damian waited two rings before the line clicked.

"Director Miller," Damian said into the receiver. "This is Damian Vance. I need the FBI Financial Crimes Division, the SEC Enforcement Task Force, and the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit at my residence in thirty minutes. I have Marcus Kane's financial ledgers, the Aegis fraud records, and the physical evidence of my wife’s murder."

May you like

Chloe shrieked, throwing her hands over her ears as Damian continued to speak into the phone, sealing her fate with every cold, precise word.
