Chapter 2 - The Wooden Box on the Truck

The truck is returned to the service court and secured while Evelyn

reviews estate records. The wooden box is not forced open because

Sofia’s old inventory identifies it as personal property transferred to

the Sofia DeLuca Memorial Trust after her death.

Luca is a beneficiary of the trust but not the sole person authorized to

dispose of its contents. His younger sister Isabella, currently living

in California, is co-beneficiary and must be notified.

Victoria becomes furious that lawyers are involved and says she was

merely clearing old storage before moving into the mansion after the

wedding. Luca tells her they had never agreed that she would move into

the estate permanently, much less remove his mother’s belongings.

The removal list includes gowns, correspondence, framed photographs,

jewelry boxes listed as empty, several art portfolios, and the locked

wooden box. Some items belong to the trust, while others belong

personally to Luca or Isabella.

The electronic approval attached to the mover’s order originated from an

event-management account Luca allowed Victoria to use for engagement

vendors. His typed name appears beneath the authorization, but there is

no secure signature or separate confirmation.

That distinction prevents Luca from immediately calling it forgery. The

question is whether Victoria knowingly represented that she had

authority she did not possess.

Isabella joins by video call and reacts strongly when she sees the

damaged wedding dress. She says their mother specifically preserved the

gown because the lace came from Sofia’s own mother, making the

alteration especially painful.

Isabella also recognizes the wooden box. Sofia called it the cedar

archive and once told both children it contained papers they should

review together if anyone ever tried to turn family history into a

business asset.

Victoria hears the phrase ‘business asset’ and abruptly asks to speak to

Luca alone. Luca refuses because the dispute now involves Isabella’s

property interests too.

For the first time, Victoria looks less worried about the dress than

about what Sofia documented years before Victoria ever entered the

family. Isabella had always distrusted the phrase ’future Mrs.

DeLuca’ because relatives used it as though marriage automatically

transferred a whole institution. She liked Victoria before the incident

but had repeatedly asked Luca whether they had discussed property and

business boundaries.

Luca had laughed those questions away as unromantic. Now he understood

romance did not become stronger when practical questions were forbidden.

The cedar box forced those conversations too late. He promised himself

that no future relationship would depend on ambiguity being mistaken for

trust.

The family gradually learned that preservation required more than

locking valuable objects behind doors. It required clear ownership,

documented permission, professional care, and the willingness to say no

even to people they loved.

Luca also learned that boundaries were not accusations. They were

instructions that allowed trust to exist without depending on

assumptions.

Every time the archive gained another record, the mystery around Sofia’s

legacy became smaller and her actual work became clearer. That was the

opposite of secrecy.

By the end, the most valuable thing inside the cedar box was not money.

It was enough documentation to let Sofia continue speaking for herself.
