Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Nursery

At three o'clock in the morning, the pediatric wing of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was wrapped in a quiet, sterile calm. The only sound in Room 412 was the rhythmic, reassuring beep of the vital signs monitor tracking baby Oliver’s steady heartbeat.

Emily Vance sat in a padded vinyl armchair beside the crib, refusing to sleep. Her dark hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she wore a borrowed hospital fleece over her scrubs. Her eyes never left the sleeping child. Even though the doctors had confirmed Oliver was out of danger, the memory of seeing him sinking beneath the turquoise water of the pool still replayed in her mind like a recurring nightmare.

The door to the private room pushed open quietly. Daniel Sterling stepped inside, carrying two warm cups of tea from the hospital cafeteria. The exhaustion on his face was etched deep around his eyes, but his posture was firm, resolute.

"You should get some rest, Emily," Daniel said softly, setting a cup on the bedside table. "I’ve arranged a private suite for you down the hall."

Emily shook her head gently. "I can't, Mr. Sterling. Every time I close my eyes, I see the water. I need to be right here when he wakes up."

Daniel pulled up a chair beside her, looking down at his son. Oliver's cheeks had regained their rosy color, his chest rising and falling in deep, restful sleep.

"The doctors told me what was in his blood, Emily," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "They found a heart medication called Digoxin. Victoria was poisoning his formula."

Emily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Dear God... That’s why he was getting so sick! Mr. Sterling, for the past three weeks, Mrs. Sterling insisted that I only use the pre-mixed formula tins kept in her private pantry. She told me the pediatrician had prescribed a special European organic brand for his digestion. She told me that if I ever used any other formula, I would be fired immediately."

"It wasn't organic formula," Daniel said bitterly. "It was poison."

Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but then a sudden thought struck her. She grabbed Daniel's arm, her expression turning urgent. "Mr. Sterling, wait. There’s something else. Two days ago, while I was restocking the nursery linen closet, Mrs. Sterling came in unexpectedly. She was talking on speakerphone with someone. She thought I was on my lunch break."

Daniel leaned in, every instinct on high alert. "Did you hear who it was?"

"She called him Julian," Emily whispered. "She said, *'Julian, the baby's fever broke again. The maid is feeding him too much water and diluting the mixture. We need to speed this up before Daniel finishes the audit on the foundation.'* And the man on the other end laughed. He had a deep, aristocratic voice. He said, *'Don't worry, my dear. Once the trust reverts, Daniel won't live long enough to finish any audit.'*"

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "Julian Croft."

"Is that your lawyer?" Emily asked, seeing the lethal shift in Daniel's eyes.

"He's been my personal attorney for seven years," Daniel whispered, the betrayal striking him like a physical blow. "He drafted my will. He structured Elena’s estate. He handled the acquisition of my first patents."

Daniel stood up, his jaw clenched tight. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying clarity. Julian wasn't just Victoria’s legal counsel; he was the mastermind behind the entire operation. He had placed Victoria in Daniel's path after Elena's murder, orchestrated their whirlwind courtship, drafted the predatory clauses in the family trust, and was now preparing to eliminate both Daniel and Oliver to claim the Sterling fortune for himself.

Just then, Daniel’s phone vibrated. It was a text message from Marcus Kane:

*Sir, Julian Croft just left the Malibu precinct. He’s heading toward your residence in Malibu right now under the guise of an emergency legal consultation. He doesn't know we've decrypted the Cayman accounts linking him to Camilla Reyes.*

Daniel looked down at Emily, then at his sleeping son. The fear that had paralyzed him earlier was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.

"Emily," Daniel said calmly. "I have two armed security details stationed outside this door. Marcus has placed Cedars-Sinai under twenty-four-hour biometric lockdown. No one enters this floor without my direct clearance."

"Where are you going, Mr. Sterling?" Emily asked, sensing the dangerous fire in his eyes.

May you like

"I’m going home," Daniel replied, pulling his coat on. "My lawyer wants an emergency consultation about my family's future. It would be rude of me to keep him waiting."
