Chapter 8 - The Legal Ambush

The courtyard went deathly quiet.

Arthur Pendelton froze, his hand still holding the state court order in mid-air. The two high-priced corporate attorneys behind Victoria exchanged panicked glances and immediately took three steps backward, distancing themselves from their client.

Victoria’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, uncomprehending bewilderment.

A tall, sharp-featured man with graying temples walked toward the terrace. He wore a tailored suit beneath his tactical jacket and held a gold federal badge in his hand.

"Victoria Vance?" the man asked, his voice crisp and authoritative.

"Who... who are you?" Victoria stammered, pulling her camel-hair coat tighter around herself. "What is the meaning of this? This is a civil property dispute! Federal agents have no jurisdiction here!"

"I am Special Agent Marcus Vance, Financial Crimes Division, Richmond Field Office," the man said, showing his credentials. "And you know damn well who I am, Victoria. We shared Thanksgiving dinner at this very house ten years ago."

Victoria gasped. "Marcus? What... what are you doing here? This is ridiculous! Did David call you to settle a personal grudge?"

"David didn't call me to settle a grudge, Victoria," Agent Vance replied coldly. "David delivered a secure courier package to our field office at five o'clock this morning. A package containing certified bank audits, offshore account routing numbers, and digital audio recordings that corroborate an ongoing grand jury investigation our division opened six months ago."

Arthur Pendelton took a step back, frantically trying to close his briefcase. "Agent Vance, my client has not been formally indicted—"

"Save it, Arthur," Marcus Vance cut in, his eyes locking onto the attorney. "We also have copies of the fraudulent probate filings you submitted to the county registrar, bearing forged signatures of the late Sarah Vance-Miller. You might want to call your own criminal defense attorney right now, Arthur, because your law license is about to be the least of your concerns."

Pendelton’s face turned the color of chalk. He dropped his briefcase onto the hood of the Mercedes, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't close the latches.

"No... no, this is impossible!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking into hysteria. "Sarah was sick! Those records are fabricated! David fabricated them to steal my inheritance!"

"The records were compiled by Harrison & Cole, Victoria," David spoke from the top of the terrace, his voice cutting through her panic like a broadsword. "The most respected forensic accounting firm on the Eastern Seaboard. Every single wire transfer from the estate account to the shell company in Grand Cayman was authorized using your private IP address at 4400 Millstone Road. Every single dollar you stole was tracked."

David walked down the stone steps, stopping five feet from the woman who had terrorized his daughter.

"You stole $1.8 million from a dying woman’s estate," David said, his voice brimming with cold fury. "You tried to blackmail her on her deathbed. And when that failed, you attacked a seven-year-old orphan because she had the audacity to sit at her mother’s table."

Victoria looked frantically at Deputy Miller. "Miller! Do something! Arrest him! He's threatening me!"

Deputy Miller took two steps back and shook his head, holding his hands up. "This is a federal matter now, Miss Vance. I don't have authority here."

Agent Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and grand larceny," Agent Vance recited, grabbing her arm.

"Get your hands off me!" Victoria shrieked, thrashing against his grip. Her designer sunglasses flew off her face, shattering against the cobblestones. "Do you know who I am? I am a Vance! My family built this city! You can't put handcuffs on me!"

May you like

"Turn around," Marcus ordered without a shred of sympathy, twisting her arms behind her back and snapping the steel cuffs onto her wrists with a sharp, echoing click. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
