Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The grand concourse of the Palmer House was an opulent relic of 19th-century luxury, with twenty-foot ceilings covered in hand-painted mythological frescoes, crystal chandeliers casting warm golden light over crimson carpets, and marble pillars lining the walls.

Now, it looked like a staging ground for an execution.

Standing at the double mahogany doors of the Red Lacquer Room was Sofia Moretti. She wore an elegant, floor-length emerald dress that accentuated her striking resemblance to Dante, but her eyes were wild, dilated with fury and panic.

Beside her stood Sergei Kozlov, the head of the Chicago Russian Bratva. Kozlov was a massive, bear-like man in his early fifties, his shaved head covered in Orthodox prison tattoos, his cold gray eyes assessing Dante like a piece of meat on a butcher's hook.

Behind them stood Special Agent Carter, a tall, gaunt man in an expensive Brooks Brothers overcoat with a gold FBI shield clipped to his lapel, surrounded by six private contractors wearing black balaclavas and holding short-barreled submachine guns.

“Dante,” Sofia said, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. “You always were too arrogant to die quietly.”

Dante stepped out of the freight elevator, his Kimber held down at his side. He didn't raise the weapon. Behind him, Victor stood guard over Elena, who was slumped against the elevator doorframe, her fingers resting secretly inside the small pocket of her jacket where she kept a backup encrypted USB drive containing the federal wire transfers.

“You look nervous, little sister,” Dante said, walking slowly down the center of the crimson carpet, completely ignoring the eight rifle barrels tracking his chest. “Did the Swiss bank call you? Did you check your balances before you invited Sergei to your coronation?”

Sofia’s jaw clenched so hard a tendon jumped in her neck. “What did you do?”

“I took back what belongs to our father,” Dante said. He stopped twenty feet from the group, his posture straight, commanding, completely devoid of fear. “You sold Leo to Carter like a stray dog. You had him gunned down in Cicero because he found out you were skimming forty million dollars from our legitimate ports to buy Kozlov’s synthetic fentanyl lines.”

Sergei Kozlov turned his heavy head toward Sofia, his thick Russian accent dripping with cold suspicion. “Sofia. What is your brother talking about? The funds for the port transaction were supposed to clear fifteen minutes ago.”

“It’s a trick, Sergei!” Sofia hissed, stepping toward the Russian kingpin. “He hacked the clearinghouse! Carter, kill him! Put a bullet in his head right now! He’s a fugitive resisting arrest!”

Special Agent Carter took a slow step forward, a smug, contemptuous smirk playing across his thin lips. “Mr. Moretti. You’re under arrest for interstate racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and the murder of Marcus Vance. Drop your weapon, or my men will tear you in half.”

“You’re out of your jurisdiction, Carter,” a weak, steady voice called out from the elevator.

Everyone looked past Dante.

Elena was dragging herself to her feet, holding onto the brass elevator handrail with both arms, her shattered leg dangling uselessly above the floor. Her face was pale as chalk, covered in sweat and dried blood, but her eyes burned with an icy, ferocious brilliance.

“Agent Carter,” Elena said, her voice carrying clearly through the silent hall. “Badge number 4492-Bravo. Assigned to the Chicago Anti-Racketeering Strike Force.”

She held up the glowing screen of her secondary tactical smartphone.

“I didn't just freeze Sofia’s bank accounts,” Elena said, a bloody smile touching her lips. “I had fourteen hours in that bunker, Carter. I followed the digital breadcrumbs of Marcus’s burner phones. Do you know where Marcus sent five hundred thousand dollars yesterday morning at six AM? To an offshore educational trust in Geneva, registered in the names of your twin daughters, Chloe and Emma.”

Carter’s smug smile instantly evaporated. The color drained from his face as if a plug had been pulled from his veins.

“What… what did you do?” Carter stammered, his fingers tightening nervously on his service weapon.

“I forwarded the entire transaction manifest, along with the audio logs of Marcus’s encrypted phone calls to your personal cellular device, to the Internal Affairs Division of the Department of Justice, the Director of the FBI, and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois,” Elena stated with absolute, mathematical precision. “Three minutes ago, the FBI tactical squad from the Chicago Field Office breached your suburban home in Naperville. You aren't executing a mafia kingpin tonight, Carter. You’re a corrupt federal rat whose life is officially over.”

The concourse descended into absolute, suffocating terror.

The tactical contractors behind Carter looked at each other, their discipline fracturing. Kozlov looked at Sofia, his hand slowly reaching beneath his heavy shearling coat toward his own customized Tokarev pistol.

Sofia realized the ground had opened up beneath her feet.

“You ruined everything!” Sofia shrieked, her voice cracking into madness. She pulled a pearl-handled pistol from her velvet evening bag and pointed it straight at Elena. “YOU STUPID LITTLE ACCOUNTANT WHORE!”
