Chapter 8 - The Cornered Predator

The private VIP reception lounge off the main gallery of the Palacio de Cibeles was lined with heavy velvet drapes that muffled the chaotic roar of the scandalized gala outside.
Javier stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails drew blood from his palms.
Inspector Ramos and two plainclothes officers stood by the exits, their arms folded, ensuring that this private family reckoning remained contained within the soundproofed walls.
Sofia sat in a velvet armchair, sipping tea from a porcelain cup, refusing to look at her brother. Clara stood beside the fireplace, watching Javier with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing a dying specimen under a lens.
"You... you lied to me," Javier choked out, pointing a trembling, accusing finger at Clara. "You staged this! You found an actress! Sofia is dead! My mother showed me the death certificate! She showed me the urn!"
"Shut up, Javier," Sofia said quietly.
The sound of his sister’s voice hit Javier like a physical blow. He stumbled back two steps, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled out of water.
"Sofia... no... it’s not possible," he stammered, his eyes darting frantically between her face and Clara’s. "Mother told me you had an embolism in Zurich. She brought your ashes back. We buried you in the family vault at San Isidro!"
"You buried an empty marble box, Javier," Sofia said, looking up at him with eyes that held no anger, only an infinite, sorrowful contempt. "Mother didn't want you to ask questions about why my share of grandfather’s stock disappeared from the balance sheet. She told you I died so you wouldn't realize she had already stolen half of your inheritance before you even graduated from university."
"No... no, Mother loved me," Javier whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whine. "Mother did everything for me! Everything we did was for the family! For the name!"
"Your mother used you as a shield, Javier," Clara said, stepping away from the fireplace. She pulled a blue judicial folder from her bag and tossed it onto the glass coffee table between them. "Read it."
"What is that?"
"It’s your mother’s formal confession," Clara said. "She signed it two hours ago in exchange for the prosecutor dropping the kidnapping charges regarding Sofia’s illegal confinement."
Javier dropped to his knees before the table, his trembling hands snatching up the papers. He scanned the pages, his eyes darting across his mother’s elegant, unmistakable cursive—the same cursive she had used to forge Clara’s signature.
*I, Mercedes Vega y Mendoza, hereby declare that the debt acquired through Vance Capital was executed without the knowledge or lawful authorization of Clara Navarro... I further declare that all sub-accounts under 'Project Argos' were established solely for the purpose of transferring the remaining assets of Navarro Engineering to my personal foundation in Vaduz, leaving my son, Javier Vega, as the sole liable administrator of the insolvent operating company...*
Javier’s eyes widened until the whites were completely ringed with red veins.
"She... she left me as the sole administrator?" he whispered, his voice shaking with absolute horror. "She made me personally liable for the bankruptcy?"
"If Victor Vance had executed the default at midnight," Clara explained coldly, "you were the one scheduled to be arrested for fraudulent insolvency this morning. Mercedes had a chartered flight to Casablanca booked for three a.m. from Torrejón Air Base. She wasn't saving the family dynasty, Javier. She was saving herself. She was going to leave you to rot in Soto del Real while she lived off Sofia’s trust in Morocco."
Javier dropped the papers. They fluttered across the carpet like dying white birds.
He looked up at Clara, his face completely broken, the arrogant scion of the Vega family reduced to a weeping, ruined boy on his knees on a hotel floor.
"Clara..." he sobbed, reaching out toward the hem of her velvet gown. "Clara, please... I didn't know. I swear on my life, I didn't know about Sofia! I thought Mother was trying to save our marriage! She told me you were trying to leave me, that you were hiding your father's money to humiliate us!"
"You threw a glass of wine in my face, Javier," Clara said, stepping back so that his reaching fingers touched only empty air. "You stood in front of half of Madrid and told me to pay for your insults or we were done."
"I was angry! I was scared!" he cried, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks, mixing with the sweat on his neck. "Please... you bought the Vance debt! You own the company! You can forgive the note! We can start over! We can leave Madrid, we can go to Costa Rica, anywhere you want! I’ll do anything, Clara. I’ll be whatever you want me to be!"
Clara looked down at him. There was no hatred in her heart. Hatred required respect, and she had none left to give.
May you like
"We *are* done, Javier," Clara said softly. "Just as you asked."
