Chapter 17 - HARPER’S SACRIFICE

"He’s blockading the lane," Liam said, his hand dropping to the door handle. "He has no legal right to block a public access road before the writ execution."

"He doesn't care about legal rights, Liam," Harper said, grabbing his arm. "He knows all he has to do is delay us until noon. If the bank closes today, the vault stays locked until nine o’clock Monday morning. And the court hearing is at eight-thirty."

Liam’s eyes flashed with fury. "I'll ram his car with my truck."

"And end up in a holding cell for vehicular assault while the judge signs the eviction?" Harper shot back. "Think, Liam! Stop reacting like a victim! We don't play his game. We play our game."

Harper looked at Evelyn. "Evelyn, does the old orchard road behind the carriage house still connect to the Miller farm?"

Evelyn blinked. "The gate has been rusted shut for fifteen years. It’s overgrown with briars."

"Liam’s truck has four-wheel drive and a winch," Harper said, her mind working with razor-sharp speed. "Liam, take your mother through the orchard. Cut through Miller’s hayfield and take the back route to Greendale. You can bypass the main road entirely."

Liam looked at his wife. "What about you?"

"I’m going to walk down that driveway," Harper said, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of her mouth. "And I’m going to make Julian Ross wish he had never heard the name Harper Vance."

"Harper, no," Liam said, panic rising in his chest. "That security guard is armed. Ross is ruthless."

"Ross is a predator who feeds on people who are afraid of his legal paper," Harper replied, pulling her tailored coat over her shoulders and checking her reflection in the hall mirror. "He thinks I’m the spoiled, shallow socialite who threw a steak on the floor last New Year’s Eve. He thinks I’m Beatrice’s daughter—a woman who sells out her family for a hundred-thousand-dollar settlement. He’s going to spend the next forty-five minutes trying to negotiate with me while you and Evelyn get into that vault."

Liam caught Harper by the waist, pulling her into him. He kissed her hard, a fierce, desperate kiss of true partnership.

"Be careful," Liam whispered.

"Get that rescission note," Harper whispered back. "Save our home."

Harper turned on her heel and strode out the front door, slamming it behind her. She walked down the gravel driveway with absolute poise, her heels clicking against the stones like the cocking of a rifle.

Julian Ross watched her approach, a smug, victorious grin spreading across his face. He pushed himself off the hood of his sedan, buttoning his coat.

"Mrs. Vance," Ross called out smoothly. "I assume your mother-in-law has finally come to her senses? Have you brought the signed quitclaim?"

Harper stopped five feet from him, crossing her arms against the biting wind.

"Let’s talk numbers, Julian," Harper said, her voice dripping with calculated arrogance. "My mother mentioned a hundred thousand relocation fee. That’s an insult. My silence, and Liam’s signature, will cost you half a million."

Ross’s eyes lit up with predatory amusement. To him, the world was entirely predictable: every person had a price, and Harper Vance had just named hers.
