Chapter 8 - The Chain of Custody

Across the Hudson River, nestled in a sterile, corporate office park in Fort Lee, New Jersey, the glass-and-steel facade of **Vanguard Bioscience Laboratories** loomed dark against the rain-swept night.
Inside the third-floor administrative suite, Dr. Aris Thorne, Director of Molecular Diagnostics, was furiously packing files into a heavy leather briefcase.
Thorne was a middle-aged geneticist whose career had been derailed a decade ago by an academic grant fraud scandal at Johns Hopkins. When Eleanor Sterling’s representatives had approached him eighteen months ago with an offer to head a private, highly lucrative genetic testing facility with a guaranteed seven-figure salary and zero oversight, Thorne had asked no questions. He had understood the unspoken bargain: he was not being hired to conduct peer-reviewed science; he was being hired to provide institutional legitimacy to the private directives of the Vance-Sterling Family Trust.
His hands were trembling violently as he stuffed paper records into the briefcase.
An hour ago, Thorne had received an encrypted priority message from Marcus Crane: *The cathedral operation went sideways. The wife noticed the NICU collection date. The mother-in-law dropped an invoice. Purge all internal server records for the Sterling comparative analysis immediately and evacuate the facility.*
"Damn her," Thorne muttered under his breath, wiping cold sweat from his balding forehead. "Damn that arrogant old witch."
He reached for his computer mouse, preparing to execute a remote wipe of the local database servers, when the heavy glass doors of the laboratory suite suddenly rattled with the sharp, rhythmic buzz of the emergency intercom.
Thorne froze. His heart slammed against his ribs.
He walked quietly to the reception desk and peered through the one-way glass into the waiting room.
Standing in the vestibule, soaked by the relentless rain but standing with the posture of an executioner, was Clara Sterling. Flanking her on either side were two uniformed Fort Lee police officers and an older, distinguished-looking man in a dripping trench coat carrying a red legal portfolio.
The man in the trench coat was Arthur Vance—Eleanor’s estranged brother, the black sheep of the Sterling-Vance family, and one of the most ruthless federal criminal defense attorneys in the state of New York.
Clara raised her eyes directly toward the one-way glass, as if she could see Thorne cowering in the dark.
Arthur Vance pressed the intercom button. His deep, gravelly voice crackled through the administrative speakers:
"Dr. Aris Thorne. We know you're in there. Open this door immediately, or Officer Miller will breach the lock under an emergency exigent-circumstances warrant for criminal tampering with medical records and biological evidence."
Thorne’s knees went weak. The game was up.
With shaking hands, Thorne keyed the electronic lock. The glass doors swung open with a pneumatic hiss.
Clara stepped into the sterile lobby. She hadn't changed her clothes. The dried blood on her hand was visible; the ruined ivory lace of her baptismal dress brushed against the clinical linoleum floor. But her eyes were terrifying in their absolute, crystalline focus.
"Dr. Thorne," Clara said, her voice quiet and deadly. "I believe you have some scientific paperwork to explain to me."
Thorne backed away toward his desk, his hands raised in a defensive posture. "Mrs. Sterling... please. I am a licensed professional. I have client-confidentiality obligations. If this is regarding the paternity analysis from this morning, all records are legally protected under—"
"Shut your mouth, Aris," Arthur Vance interrupted, slamming his heavy leather portfolio onto the reception desk with a force that rattled the acrylic sign. "I drafted the original articles of incorporation for the Vance-Sterling Trust twenty years ago. I know every shell corporation, every offshore holding, and every illegal kickback channel my sister operates. You are not protected by client confidentiality. You are an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal scheme involving medical fraud, unauthorized harvesting of biological specimens from premature infants, and interstate conspiracy to defraud."
Arthur leaned across the desk, his gray eyes narrowing like razor blades. "I have already spoken with the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. In precisely twenty minutes, a federal search team will be here to seize your servers, your hard drives, and every drop of biological material in that cold storage freezer. You have exactly one chance to save yourself from spending the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."
Thorne looked between the towering federal attorney and the two armed police officers standing by the door. His gaze finally settled on Clara.
In Clara’s hand was the chilled transport case containing the three fresh, tamper-evident vials of venous blood drawn by Dr. Harrison at St. Jude’s Hospital.
"What do you want?" Thorne whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whimper.
"The truth," Clara said, setting the transport case down before him. "I want the real chain-of-custody log for July 14th. I want to know whose biological samples Marcus Crane brought into this building. And I want the raw, uncorrupted genetic profiles of my children run through this sequencer right now."
Thorne sank into his executive leather chair, burying his face in his trembling hands.
"Crane brought mouth swabs from three anonymous donors," Thorne confessed, the words spilling out of him in a desperate, panicked purge. "He brought them in sterile transport tubes two days before the hospital visit. They were saliva samples taken from unrelated infants at a private clinic in Newark. I was instructed to enter them into the system under the names *Sterling, Infant A, B, and C*."
Clara felt a profound shudder pass through her body. The sheer, calculating depravity of it took the breath from her lungs. Eleanor hadn't even tested her babies' DNA. She had submitted the DNA of completely unrelated strangers, paid Thorne to stamp it with certified seals, and handed the exclusion reports to Julian like a loaded gun.
"And the hospital visit?" Clara asked, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Why did Crane go into Pod 4 on July 14th?"
"To create the paper trail," Thorne admitted, tears of self-pity leaking from his eyes. "If Julian’s lawyers ever audited the hospital logs, there had to be a timestamped record of an authorized courier entering the NICU on the alleged collection date. Crane didn't collect anything of scientific value. He just used hospital swabs to wipe spit-up cloths so that if anyone questioned the chain, we could present contaminated hospital-grade cotton as proof of physical presence."
"You monster," Clara whispered.
"I didn't have a choice!" Thorne cried out, clutching his head. "Mrs. Sterling threatened to expose my previous licensing violations! She promised me three million dollars in an offshore escrow account once the divorce was finalized and Julian took over the board completely!"
"Get up," Arthur Vance commanded, pointing toward the heavy double doors leading to the clinical sequencing laboratory. "Key the locks. Fire up the thermal cyclers. You are going to run a 24-locus comparative analysis using the legitimate blood samples Mrs. Sterling just brought from St. Jude’s. And you are going to compare them against Julian Sterling’s biological profile, which I know you still have stored in your reference database."
Thorne looked up, his eyes widening. "Julian’s profile is in the system. When he did his initial carrier screening for the IVF treatments three years ago, his full genetic map was uploaded to our clinical network."
May you like
"Then do it," Clara ordered, her voice brooking no argument. "Run the test. And if you attempt to falsify a single allele, Dr. Thorne... I will ensure that the rest of your natural life is spent in a federal cage."
