Chapter 3 - The Iron Door Blows Open

The blistering heat had already turned the skin across my knuckles a violent shade of crimson.

I felt the agonizing prickle of impending combustion, my hand trembling violently as I fought against the crushing weight of her arms.

“Say goodbye to your pretty little fingers, Emily!”

Vanessa’s shriek reached a fever pitch of manic triumph, her platinum hair falling loose around her twisted, sweating face.

Brandon took another slow step forward, lifting his phone to take a photograph of my imminent mutilation.

“Smile for the camera, little sis, this one is going straight to your college group chat!”

Before the first coal could touch my flesh, the heavy silence of the estate’s outer perimeter was torn apart by a deafening roar.

The screech of burning rubber on wet asphalt echoed from the circular front driveway with the force of an explosion.

Twin beams of blinding high-intensity LED headlights sliced through the floor-to-ceiling salon windows like twin searchlights.

A three-ton armored Mercedes Maybach plowed through the ornamental courtyard fountain, sending water and stone spraying into the night.

Vanessa froze for a fraction of a second, her hands loosening their grip on my wrist just enough for me to pull back half an inch.

“What the hell was that?”

Brandon muttered, turning his head toward the grand entrance foyer with an annoyed frown.

“Did one of the delivery drivers hit the security gate again?”

He did not even have the chance to lower his scotch glass before the massive, hand-carved mahogany double doors exploded inward.

BANG!

The reinforced steel deadbolts sheared right off their frames with a sound like a high-caliber gunshot.

Both ten-foot-tall wooden doors flew off their hinges, crashing violently into the foyer walls and shattering the ornamental sconces.

A wave of freezing rain and cold autumn wind swept into the warm salon, extinguishing the scent of burning charcoal in an instant.

Standing in the center of the splintered doorway stood the towering, imposing silhouette of my father, Richard Harrison.

He was not in Chicago.

He was not hundreds of miles away sitting in an insulated boardroom signing endless piles of corporate contracts.

He was right here, drenched in rain, his tailored black Italian wool coat hanging open to reveal his dark silk tie.

His breathing was heavy, ragged, and dangerous, his chest heaving like a wounded predator that had scented blood.

His salt-and-pepper hair was plastered to his forehead by the storm, and his steel-gray eyes were locked directly onto us.

For one horrifying heartbeat, the entire room was frozen in absolute, suffocating terror.

Richard Harrison’s gaze dropped instantly from the overturned furniture to the shattered crystal on the floor.

Then his eyes moved to Brandon, who was standing frozen with his scotch glass hovering halfway to his mouth.

And finally, my father’s eyes landed on Vanessa’s hands, which were still wrapped tightly around my bruised, bleeding right wrist.

He saw the glowing red coals of the brazier barely two inches beneath my fingers.

He saw the dark orange stain on her emerald gown, and he saw my tear-streaked face covered in terror and fresh bruises.

The sheer, unadulterated paternal fury that ignited in my father’s eyes was something I had never witnessed in my entire life.

It was not the cold anger he used to destroy rival corporations or bankrupt his enemies in court.

It was the primal, lethal rage of a father who had just witnessed someone attempting to slaughter his only child.

“GET YOUR DAMN HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!”

His roar shook the very foundation of the estate, rattling the massive crystal chandeliers suspended fifty feet above us.

My father crossed the sixty-foot grand salon in four massive, terrifying strides, his heavy dress shoes pounding like thunder.

Vanessa barely had time to blink before Richard’s massive hand clamped down over her wrist with bone-crushing force.

With a single, effortless jerk of his powerful arm, he tore Vanessa away from me as if she weighed nothing more than a rag doll.

I lost my balance and tumbled backward onto the soft carpet, clutching my throbbing, reddened wrist against my chest.

“Emily!”

My father’s voice cracked with raw, suffocating panic as he stepped directly over me, forming an impenetrable human shield.

“Dad...”

I sobbed out the single syllable, my entire body convulsing in uncontrollable waves of shock and relief.

He did not look back at me yet; his terrifying, lethal focus remained locked squarely on his wife.

Vanessa stumbled several feet across the marble floor, gasping for breath as she cradled her bruised wrist against her chest.

The orange juice stain on her emerald dress looked like a badge of shame beneath the glaring light of the chandeliers.

She blinked rapidly, trying desperately to summon the sweet, innocent persona that had manipulated my father for thirty-six months.

“Richard! Richard, darling, oh thank God you are home, you don't understand what just happened!”

She stammered, smoothing down her soaked gown while trying to force a trembling, fragile smile onto her pale lips.

“Emily went completely out of control, Richard! She attacked me with a drink tray and tried to push me into the fireplace!”

Brandon quickly set his scotch glass down on a side table, nodding vigorously as he stepped toward his mother’s side.

“It's true, Richard! The girl lost her mind over nothing! My mother was only trying to restrain her until security arrived!”

My father stood completely motionless between them and me, his massive hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides.

The rain dripped steadily from the hem of his dark coat, pooling silently on the pristine marble floor.

He tilted his head slightly, his gray eyes narrowing into two icy slits of pure, venomous contempt.

“Do you think I am blind, Vanessa?”

His voice was no longer a roar; it was a low, terrifying whisper that promised complete and utter annihilation.

“I saw the live video feed twenty minutes ago when I was boarding my jet at the private terminal.”

Vanessa’s fragile smile vanished instantly from her face, her skin turning the color of wet chalk.

“What... what live feed?”

She whispered, her vocal cords tightening as a cold realization settled into the pit of her stomach.

May you like

Richard took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his towering frame casting a massive shadow across her shivering form.

“The live feed showing you dragging my daughter by the arm to burn her flesh over a glass of spilled juice.”
