Chapter 18 - THE MATRIARCH FALLS

The grandfather clock in Evelyn Vance's living room had stopped ticking.

It was four o'clock in the morning when four marked squad cars pulled up the circular gravel driveway of Vance Manor.

Ryan and I sat in the back of an unmarked detective's car, watching through the tinted windshield.

Lucas and Sophie were safe at the precinct's family liaison office under the gentle care of social services.

The front double doors of the mansion swung open before the lead detective could even knock.

Evelyn stood in the marble entryway, dressed in a pristine silk dressing gown, her posture immaculate.

"What is the meaning of this circus?" Evelyn demanded, looking past the officers with haughty disdain.

Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with twenty years on the force, stepped up the stone stairs.

"Evelyn Vance, I have a warrant for your arrest," Miller said, pulling a folded document from his trench coat.

Evelyn scoffed, an amused, dismissive laugh escaping her painted lips.

"Don't be ridiculous," she sneered. "My daughter stole my car and fled. I am the victim here."

"Your daughter is currently in surgery at County General delivering her child," Miller replied coldly.

Evelyn's eyes flickered with a brief spark of irritation, but not a single hint of maternal concern.

"And she told us everything before they put her under," Miller continued, stepping closer.

"Brianna is a convicted felon and an addict; her word means nothing," Evelyn said, her voice turning sharp as ice.

"Her word meant very little," Miller agreed, unhooking a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Until we pulled the surveillance footage from your estate's private server twenty minutes ago."

Evelyn's breath hitched, the aristocratic mask finally cracking around her eyes.

"We have you on camera cutting Brianna's ankle monitor in your private study," Miller said with devastating calm.

"You can't prove that," Evelyn stammered, taking a half-step back into the foyer.

"And we have you handing her the bolt cutters and the spare key to my son’s back gate," Ryan’s voice cut through the darkness.

Ryan stepped out of the unmarked car, his voice steady, powerful, and utterly devoid of mercy.

Evelyn stared at her son, her hands trembling slightly against the lapels of her silk robe.

"Ryan," Evelyn whispered, her composure crumbling into desperate pieces. "I did it for the family name. If she was institutionalized, the scandal—"

"You sacrificed my children for your pride," Ryan said, standing tall beside the lead detective.

"I am your mother!" Evelyn cried out, a pathetic, desperate plea echoing through the grand hall.

"Not anymore," Ryan said softly, his voice final and absolute.

Detective Miller stepped forward, grabbing Evelyn's wrists and pulling them behind her back.

The metal cuffs clicked shut with a harsh, metallic snap that shattered three generations of untouchable wealth.

As they led the crying, disheveled matriarch down the stone steps, she looked at me sitting in the car.

I didn't gloat, and I didn't look away.

I held her gaze until the squad car door slammed shut, sealing her fate behind tinted bulletproof glass.
