Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Poisoner

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The words *“your daughter”* hit him like a physical blow, a sudden, blinding flash of light amidst the suffocating darkness of the hospital corridor.
"My daughter..." Julian whispered, his fingers trembling against the surgeon's sleeve. "Is she... is she alive?"
The surgeon, Dr. David Campbell, the head of trauma obstetrics at Greenwich Hospital, glanced warily at Eleanor and the two men in tailored suits hovering like vultures behind Julian. He stepped closer, deliberately positioning his body to block Eleanor’s view.
"Your daughter is alive, Mr. Sterling," Dr. Campbell said, his voice low and measured. "She weighs barely three pounds. She suffered severe intrauterine hypoxia due to a massive, near-total placental abruption. We had to perform an emergency vertical C-section to extract her in under four minutes. She is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on high-frequency mechanical ventilation."
"And Clara?" Julian choked out, tears finally breaking through his stony composure, rolling down his unshaven cheeks. "Tell me my wife is alive. Please."
Dr. Campbell hesitated, his jaw clenching. "Your wife lost over three liters of blood before she reached our doors. We’ve given her six units of packed red blood cells, four units of plasma, and platelets. We had to perform an emergency surgical embolization to stop the hemorrhage. She is in a medically induced coma in the Surgical ICU."
Julian staggered backward, his hand catching the edge of the nurses’ station counter. A deep, agonizing sob tore through his chest.
"Can she survive this?" Julian begged.
"Her heart is holding on, but barely," Dr. Campbell said. Then, his eyes narrowed, his tone dropping into something far darker, far more dangerous. "Mr. Sterling, when we drew Clara’s blood for the baseline cross-match, we ran an automated comprehensive toxicology screen. The state automated alert triggered immediately."
Behind Julian, Dr. Bradley cleared his throat with nervous, aggressive authority. "Doctor, I am the family’s personal physician. Any medical findings must be handed directly to me under private medical confidentiality—"
"Shut up, Bradley," Dr. Campbell snapped, not even turning his head. "I know who you are, Robert. And I know your license in Stamford was under review three years ago before the Sterling foundation made an eight-figure donation to their research wing. You have zero authority in this hospital."
Dr. Campbell turned his full attention back to Julian.
"Your wife’s blood is saturated with synthetic ergotamine alkaloids and high concentrations of digitalis. That wasn't a natural placental abruption, Julian. Someone has been feeding your wife lethal doses of labor-inducing toxins for at least three to four weeks. If she had ingested one more dose tonight, her uterus would have completely ruptured, and both she and your daughter would have died before dawn."
Eleanor stepped forward, her voice perfectly pitched to project righteous indignation. "Doctor Campbell, how dare you cast such vile insinuations in front of my grieving son! Clara was from an unstable background! She was seeing alternative wellness practitioners in New Haven! She was taking unregulated herbal supplements behind our backs—"
"Clara didn't buy those herbs, Mother," Julian interrupted.
His voice was dead. Flat. Cold as the grave.
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper he had snatched from Eleanor’s bureau while the paramedics were loading Clara into the ambulance.
"What is that?" Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, a flash of genuine fear flickering beneath her immaculate makeup.
"It’s an invoice from an artisanal botanical apothecary in Vermont," Julian said softly, unfolding the receipt. "Billed to the Sterling Family Trust, credit card ending in 4091. Your personal black card, Eleanor. Two shipments of concentrated Foxglove extract and organic Ergot tincture. Delivered to the Sterling estate’s private gardener’s cottage under your name."
Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
"You thought you were so meticulous," Julian whispered, stepping so close that his breath stirred the silver hairs of her fringe. "You thought that because you controlled the family money, because you bought the local judges and the local doctors, you could murder anyone who threatened your kingdom. You killed Madeline because she found the offshore accounts you embezzled from my father. And you tried to kill Clara because she found out that you murdered Madeline."
"Julian, control yourself!" Arthur Vance, the family attorney, grabbed Julian’s forearm with sharp force. "You are making public statements that constitute severe defamation! Eleanor is your mother! She built this empire for you!"
Julian didn't look at the lawyer. With a sudden, explosive motion, Julian ripped his arm from the lawyer’s grasp, grabbed Vance by the lapels of his $5,000 cashmere coat, and slammed him violently against the wall of the waiting room.
The glass display case beside them shattered, sending shards of safety glass raining onto the floor.
"Get your hands off me, you soulless parasite!" Julian roared into the lawyer’s face. "If you say one more word to defend this monster, I swear on my daughter’s life I will use every dollar of my father’s trust to ensure you spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary!"
"Security! 4th floor ICU, code gray!" a nurse screamed into her intercom.
Four burly hospital security guards rounded the corner at a dead sprint.
Julian released the terrified lawyer, who collapsed against the nurses' station gasping for breath. Julian turned slowly toward his mother.
Eleanor stood frozen. The diamond willow brooch on her lapel rose and fell with her rapid, shallow breaths. For the first time in her life, the great Eleanor Sterling looked small.
"Julian..." she whispered, her voice finally cracking into an authentic, desperate plea. "You are my son. You are my only blood. Everything I did... I did to protect the family from being torn apart by women who didn't understand what it takes to survive at this level!"
"You're right, Eleanor," Julian whispered, his eyes hollow, dead to any remaining drop of filial love. "You protected the family. But Clara and that baby fighting for their lives in the NICU? *They* are my family. You are nothing to me now but a ghost."
The security guards arrived, sliding to a stop on the slick linoleum.
"Sir, step away from the woman!" the lead guard commanded.
"I don't need to step away," Julian said calmly, never taking his eyes off Eleanor. "Because the Greenwich Police and the State Bureau of Investigation are already in the lobby. I called them from the ambulance."
The heavy elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed.
Ding.
Three detectives in plain clothes, accompanied by two armed state troopers, walked out into the corridor. The lead detective, a woman with tired, sharp gray eyes and an FBI task force badge clipped to her belt, locked her gaze onto Eleanor Sterling.
"Eleanor Sterling?" Detective Miller announced, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. "We have an active arrest warrant for attempted murder in the first degree, assault with a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence."
Eleanor’s face drained of every last atom of blood.
She turned to look at Julian, her lips trembling, waiting for her son to intervene. Waiting for the Sterling power to assert itself.

Julian simply turned his back on her and walked through the doors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
