Chapter 8 - The Hidden Wire

The screen didn't display divorce documents.
It displayed a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed.
The audio crackled through the conference room’s surround-sound speakers:
*"Mark disciplined an insubordinate, disrespectful girl who forgot her place... And frankly, he showed remarkable restraint... If you refuse, my dear, the warrant for your arrest for felony assault on Julian will be executed by noon tomorrow."*
Eleanor’s face drained of every drop of color. Her hand jerked, knocking her glass of sparkling water across the mahogany table, soaking the legal documents in front of her. "What... what is that?"
"That, Eleanor," Brenda said with surgical precision, "is an illegal recording of you attempting to extort a domestic violence victim and tamper with a state witness. Admissible under state criminal code section 42-B because it documents the commission of a felony."
Mark shot to his feet, his chair screeching backward. "You recorded my mother? You think this saves you? This doesn't change what you did to Julian! You attacked him!"
"Did she, Julian?" I asked, turning my gaze directly to the younger brother.
Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously above his foam collar. "You... you kicked me! You threw me against the wall!"
"Funny," Brenda said, tapping the tablet again. "Because twelve hours ago, our private investigator obtained the security footage from the Urgent Care clinic you visited on Sunday night."
The screen switched.
A video played showing Julian walking into the clinic lobby at 11:30 PM on Sunday night. He was laughing, texting on his phone, and performing full arm circles without an ounce of pain. When the nurse called his name, the video showed him deliberately wincing, slumping his shoulders, and asking the doctor for a neck brace specifically for 'insurance documentation.'
"Fraudulent medical reporting to support a false police report," Brenda noted aloud. "A Class 3 felony, Julian. That carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence in this state."
Julian ripped the neck brace off his throat, his face turning an apoplectic shade of scarlet. "Mark! You said she had nothing! You said she was alone!"
"Shut up, Julian!" Mark roared, turning on his brother with sudden, wild panic in his eyes.
"Don't yell at him, Mark," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table, fixing my husband with an unblinking stare. "You need your brother. After all, who else is going to take the blame when the Securities and Exchange Commission finds out about *Vanguard Crest Holdings*?"
The entire room seemed to collapse into absolute, dead silence.
The name hit Mark like a sledgehammer to the chest. He literally stumbled backward, hitting the frosted glass wall behind him. His eyes dilated, filled with raw, unadulterated terror.
"How... how do you..." Mark stammered, his polished, arrogant veneer peeling away to reveal the frightened, cornered animal underneath.
"You forged my signature on twelve million dollars' worth of toxic liabilities," I said, every word hitting him like a physical blow. "You transferred corporate assets to hide them from the upcoming federal audit. And you thought that by beating me, smearing me on social media, and framing me as a violent lunatic, you could throw me to the federal wolves while you walked away clean."
Richard Vance, the Sterling family lawyer, immediately slammed his briefcase shut. He pushed his chair back, stood up, and held up both hands.
"I am withdrawing as counsel for Mark Sterling effective immediately," Richard said, his voice flat, professional, and completely devoid of loyalty. "I was not informed of active federal securities fraud. Do not contact my office again."
"Richard! You can't leave!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical rage. "We pay you millions!"
Richard didn't even look back as he walked out the door, the heavy latch clicking behind him.
"You think you’re smart, Clara?" Mark snarled, his voice trembling as he stepped back toward the table, his fists clenched, the violent predator surfacing once more. "You have no proof! You have digital scans! Scans don't hold up in court! My word against yours! My firm has fifty lawyers who will bury you in paperwork until you are bankrupt and living on the street!"
"He's right!" Eleanor chimed in, grasping at straws, her pearls trembling against her throat. "Who will believe you? You’re a nobody! A housewife!"
I slowly reached into my jacket pocket.
I didn't pull out a phone. I didn't pull out a flash drive.
I pulled out a small, metallic silver badge and laid it flat in the center of the table.
Beside Brenda, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open once more.
Four men in dark suits, wearing federal credentials around their necks, stepped into the room. At their head was Marcus Hayes, Chief Investigator for the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division.
"Mark Sterling?" Hayes announced, his voice reverberating through the vast room. "We have an active federal warrant for your arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forgery, and grand larceny."
Mark stared at the federal agents. His jaw hung slack. "No... no, wait! This is a domestic dispute! This is my wife trying to—"

"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Sterling," Hayes interrupted, gesturing to the two agents behind him. "Cuff him."
