Chapter 7 - A Mother's Vicious Treason

While Christian was escorted to Marcus’s secure downtown office to give his preliminary deposition under federal protective custody, Marcus and I drove directly to the Manhattan Detention Complex on White Street.

It was 4:15 AM.

Because Marcus was officially the court-appointed special executor for the Sterling estate and held high-level federal clearance, we bypassed the standard visiting hours. The fluorescent lights of the underground interrogation wing were harsh and buzzing, casting a sickly yellow hue over the concrete walls.

We sat on cold metal chairs on one side of a reinforced partition. Two minutes later, a heavy steel door buzzed open.

Evelyn Vance was led into the room.

The transformation was shocking. The impeccably styled matriarch had been stripped of her designer cardigan, her diamond jewelry, and her pristine dignity. She wore an oversized orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on her frail frame. Her silver hair was tangled and greasy, clinging to her sunken cheeks. But her eyes—those cold, reptilian eyes—still burned with an unquenchable, bitter arrogance.

She sat down heavily on the metal stool, glaring at me through the mesh glass.

“Did you come to gloat, Elena?” Evelyn spat, her voice raspy from hours of screaming at federal agents. “Did you come to see the great Evelyn Vance in chains? Enjoy it while you can. My legal team will have this entire sham dismissed by noon. A few forged receipts from Zurich won't survive a preliminary hearing in the Southern District.”

I didn't flinch. I folded my hands calmly on the table.

“Your legal team resigned thirty minutes ago, Evelyn,” Marcus said smoothly, placing a stack of termination notices against the glass. “When the Department of Justice froze all seventy-two bank accounts associated with the Vance Family Trust, your retainers bounced. Not a single top-tier litigation firm in New York is willing to represent a woman facing federal charges of corporate fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and premeditated homicide.”

Evelyn’s lip curled, but her eyes twitched nervously. “Julian will pay them. Julian’s personal accounts—”

“Julian is singing like a canary in the federal holding facility three floors below us, Evelyn,” I interrupted, leaning closer to the partition. “He told them everything. He gave them the safe combination to your country estate in Bedford. He gave them the offshore account numbers in Belize. And he told them about the private meeting you had with Dr. Sterling last Thursday to finalize the dosage of Haloperidol to keep me sedated.”

Evelyn laughed—a dry, rattling cackle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

“Julian?” she mocked, shaking her head with utter contempt. “That spineless little worm. I always knew he was weak. From the day he was born, he was terrified of his own shadow. He clung to my skirts like a frightened dog. I gave him a seat at the table! I gave him an empire! And at the first sign of pressure, he folds like wet paper!”

“You used your own son as bait, Evelyn,” Marcus said, his voice laced with profound disgust. “You were ready to send him to federal prison just to take Elena’s shares.”

“Of course I was!” Evelyn slammed her shackled hands onto the steel table with a deafening crash of metal against iron. The two guards behind her stepped forward, but she ignored them, leaning her twisted face against the mesh, her eyes bulging with manic fury. “Julian wasn't my son! Not really! He was the son of my husband’s pathetic mistress, whom I was forced to adopt to maintain the family’s public standing thirty years ago! I despised every breath he took! I despised changing his diapers! I despised watching him parade around my house like an heir!”

The confession hung in the cold, sterilized air like a toxic vapor.

Marcus froze, his eyes widening in genuine shock. Even Marcus, who had spent a decade investigating his family’s darkest secrets, hadn't known the truth about Julian’s parentage.

“So you see, Elena,” Evelyn sneered, her yellowed teeth bared in a feral grin. “I didn't betray my blood. Julian was never my blood. Christian was the only one who mattered. Christian is the rightful Sterling heir, and Christian will inherit everything Arthur built. And there is nothing you, Marcus, or the United States government can do to stop him!”

I looked at the woman before me—a creature so consumed by greed, hatred, and megalomania that she had destroyed every life she had ever touched, all for the illusion of total control.

I slowly pulled my phone from my pocket and pressed play on the voice memo screen.

Christian’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, steady, and filled with cold, absolute condemnation:

*“Evelyn. I’m standing in Marcus Vance’s office right now, looking at the forged letters you used to steal twelve years of my life. I have signed a full confession and a comprehensive federal cooperation agreement. Everything you told me was a lie. You are not my mother. You are not my family. You are a monster, and I will personally testify against you until you die in a prison cell.”*

The cackle died instantly in Evelyn’s throat.

The manic grin froze, then shattered into an expression of raw, unmitigated horror. Her jaw hung slack. Her eyes rolled slightly, as if her brain was refusing to process the words echoing from the tiny speaker.

“No...” she whispered, her voice failing her. “No... Christian wouldn't... Christian loves me... I gave him everything...”

“Christian knows you murdered our father, Evelyn,” I said, rising from my chair and looking down at her through the glass. “And today, at seven o’clock, the board of Vance & Sterling will vote to remove every trace of your name from the corporate charter. You will die alone, penniless, and forgotten, behind the concrete walls of a federal penitentiary.”

I turned toward the exit, my coat trailing behind me.

Behind me, Evelyn lunged at the glass, screaming like a wounded banshee, her fingernails clawing at the reinforced mesh as the two federal guards tackled her to the concrete floor.

“ELENA! ELENAAA! YOU CAN’T TAKE IT FROM ME! IT’S MINE! IT’S ALL MINE!”

May you like

The heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off her dying screams forever.
