Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Trophy Wife

The federal marshals didn't waste time. Within five minutes of Arthur’s presentation, Marcus Vance was escorted from the executive suite in handcuffs, not for the corporate dispute, but on an outstanding federal warrant for interstate wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. As he was marched past the boardroom doors, his venomous glare promised murder, but the steel around his wrists told an entirely different story.
The remaining board members scrambled to vacate the room, stammering apologies and offering hollow pledges of loyalty as they practically tripped over each other to reach the elevators.
Only four people remained in the cavernous, cedar-paneled room: myself, Arthur, Julian—still weeping on the floor—and Chloe, who stood frozen like a mannequin whose strings had been abruptly severed.
"Arthur," I said, not taking my eyes off the couple before me. "Give us the room."
Arthur gave a brief, respectful nod, collected his leather files, and pulled the heavy double doors shut behind him.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Julian pulled himself up using the edge of the table, his designer shirt drenched in sweat, his hair plastered to his forehead. He looked fifty years old.
"Mom... Eleanor," he begged, his voice a hoarse, ragged rasp. "We can fix this. You can withdraw the federal referral! You can tell the US Attorney that this was an internal corporate misunderstanding! You have the connections. Judge Vance-Reynolds owes you her appointment! Call her!"
"I don't make calls to obstruct justice, Julian," I said, resting my hands calmly on the back of the executive chair. "I leave that to criminals."
"I am your SON!" Julian screamed, the sudden explosion of rage cracking his voice into pieces. "I am your flesh and blood! How could you do this to me? How could you orchestrate a federal sting against your own child?"
"You orchestrated your own downfall, Julian," I said, my voice maintaining its chilling, maternal equilibrium. "I merely stepped out of the way of the avalanche you started."
Chloe stepped forward, her hands clenched into tight, trembling fists. The terrified girl from ten minutes ago was gone; in her place was a cornered animal baring its teeth.
"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Chloe spat, her eyes wild with malice. "You think you're going to send Julian to prison and leave me with nothing? I am his legal wife! We have a prenuptial agreement under New York state law that guarantees me twenty-five percent of his net worth upon separation! If he goes to prison, I get the penthouse! I get the summer estate in the Hamptons! I get his corporate share allocations!"
I looked at Chloe and, for the first time that day, I smiled.
It was a cold, sharp smile that froze the words right in her throat.
"You really should have let Arthur review your prenuptial agreement before you signed it, Chloe," I said smoothly.
Chloe’s jaw clenched. "What are you talking about? My father’s attorneys drafted that agreement!"
"Your father's attorneys were disbarred three years ago for tax fraud in Miami," I replied, opening my own slim leather folder on the desk. "And when Julian brought that prenuptial contract to me before your lavish, three-million-dollar wedding in Saint-Tropez—a wedding that I paid for down to the last imported peony—I made one minor amendment to the addendum."
Chloe’s chest heaved. "What amendment?"
"The 'Origin of Assets' clause," I said, turning the page toward her. "Under Section 8, any asset acquired by Julian Carter through funds derived directly or indirectly from the Vance-Carter Freight Operating Company or its subsidiaries remains the sole, irrevocable property of the founding matriarch in the event of an uncertified transfer. Translation, Chloe: Julian never owned the penthouse in Manhattan. Vance-Carter Real Estate Holdings owns it. Julian never owned the Hamptons estate. The Vance Family Trust owns it. Even the Maybach he drove to the restaurant last night? A corporate lease under my central transport account."
Chloe’s face drained of every drop of color. Her eyes darted from the legal text to Julian, whose mouth was hanging open in absolute disbelief.
"No..." Chloe breathed, her voice barely a squeak. "No, that's impossible. Julian told me—"
"Julian told you what you wanted to hear so you would stay on his arm and stroke his fragile, pathetic ego," I interrupted. "And you stayed because you thought you were attaching yourself to a hundred-million-dollar empire. But the truth, Chloe, is far worse than that."
I pulled a third document from my folder. A background dossier with a glossy eight-by-ten photograph stapled to the upper left corner.
Chloe looked down at the photograph, and her entire body began to shake violently.
"You didn't meet Julian by accident at that charity gala in Geneva five years ago, did you, Chloe?" I asked, my voice dropping to a deadly, quiet whisper.
Julian looked up, his brow furrowing through his tears. "What? What are you talking about, Mom? Chloe was working for the Red Cross foundation!"
"Chloe’s real name is Chloe Jenkins," I said, reading directly from the dossier. "Born in Tampa, Florida. Prior to meeting you, Julian, she worked as an independent executive hostess for an offshore hospitality firm owned by none other than... Marcus Vance."
Julian froze. He turned his head slowly, looking at his wife as if she were an alien creature who had just shed her human skin.
"What?" Julian gasped. "Chloe... is that true?"
Chloe didn't answer. She backed away toward the door, her breathing shallow, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit.
"Marcus Vance paid off her two-hundred-thousand-dollar credit card debt in 2018," I continued, closing the dossier with a sharp slap. "In exchange, she was given a specific assignment: find the insecure, entitled heir to Vance-Carter Freight, inflate his ego, isolate him from his mother, and guide him directly into Blackthorn Capital’s financial trap. Every vacation she demanded, every luxury purchase she forced him into, was designed to drain his liquid assets until he had no choice but to borrow from Marcus."
"You... you were working for my uncle?" Julian’s voice broke into a sickening, pathetic whimper. He stumbled toward her, grabbing her arm. "CHLOE! DID YOU WORK FOR MARCUS?"
Chloe yanked her arm out of his grasp with such violence that Julian tumbled back against the conference chairs. The mask was completely off now.
"Get your filthy hands off me, you weak little boy!" Chloe snarled, her face contorted in pure, unadulterated disgust. "You think I could ever love a pathetic, sniveling mama’s boy like you? You couldn't even stand up to your mother without crying! Marcus offered me five million dollars to deliver Vance-Carter's freight corridors! Five million! And you were so desperate for a pretty girl to look at you that you handed over your entire life on a silver platter!"
Julian stared at her, his eyes wide and completely vacant, as if his entire reality had just dissolved beneath his feet.
"You used me," Julian whispered. "You told me you loved me."
"I loved the black card, Julian!" Chloe laughed, a shrill, hysterical sound that echoed off the high ceiling. "I loved the private jets and the penthouse! But sleeping with you made my skin crawl every single night!"
She turned toward me, her eyes burning with hatred. "So what, Eleanor? Marcus is arrested, Julian is going to prison, and I don't get the money! But you're still an old, lonely hag who has to spend the rest of her miserable life knowing her only son despised her so much he let another woman destroy him!"
I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice.
I picked up the intercom receiver on the desk and pressed line one.
"Agent Torres," I said calmly. "You can come in now."
The boardroom doors opened immediately. Agent Torres and two female marshals stepped into the room, handcuffs already drawn.
"Chloe Jenkins, also known as Chloe Carter," Torres said, reading from a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate extortion, and acting as an unregistered co-conspirator in an organized racketeering enterprise."
Chloe’s hysterical laugh cut off into a sharp, choking gasp as the female marshals seized her arms, twisting them behind her back.
"Wait! No! You can't arrest me! I was just his wife! I didn't sign the corporate papers!" Chloe shrieked, kicking her heels against the carpet as the cold steel ratcheted tightly around her wrists. "Julian! Tell them! Julian, help me!"
Julian didn't look at her. He sat on the floor with his knees pulled to his chest, staring blankly at the puddle of spilled water.

"Eleanor! Eleanor, please! Don't let them do this!" Chloe screamed as she was dragged backward toward the door. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry about the restaurant! I'm sorry about the chair!"
"The chair had nothing to do with it, Chloe," I said softly, as the heavy doors began to swing shut. "It was the company you kept. And the debt you forgot to pay."
