Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice

The courtroom was vast, sterile, and cold. High above the wooden bench sat Judge Evelyn Higgins, her sharp silver hair pulled into a tight bun, her dark eyes scanning the paperwork before her with the clinical precision of a surgeon.
In the prisoner’s box to the left, Chloe was led in by two corrections officers. She was wearing an orange institutional jumpsuit, her wrists shackled to a chain around her waist. Her high-end blowout from yesterday was a tangled rat’s nest; her mascara was smeared across her cheeks; her designer swagger was completely gone, replaced by the wild, terrified look of a trapped animal.
When she saw Julian standing near the defense table, she let out a broken sob. “Julian! Tell them! Tell this judge that your mother is crazy! Show her the medical papers!”
“Quiet in the gallery!” the bailiff snapped, banging his gavel once.
Judge Higgins adjusted her glasses and looked down at the prosecutor. “We are here for an initial bond hearing on the felony charges against Chloe Vance, as well as an emergency petition filed yesterday by Julian Vance regarding the conservatorship of Eleanor Vance. Mr. Sterling, you represent the respondent?”
“I do, Your Honor,” David Sterling stepped to the podium with the calm, terrifying elegance of a master chess player about to deliver checkmate. “And before we address the matter of bond, we have several threshold motions that must be entered into the record.”
David’s junior associate stepped forward, placing three heavy black binders on the judge’s bench.
“First, Your Honor, we present a sworn affidavit of recantation executed last night by Dr. Robert Mercer, withdrawing in its entirety the fraudulent Form 4B declaration of incapacity. Dr. Mercer admits under oath that he fabricated the diagnosis under financial inducement promised by Chloe Jenkins Vance.”
Chloe let out a sharp, choked gasp in the prisoner’s box. Her knees buckled, and she had to be held up by the two female corrections officers.
“Second,” David continued, his voice ringing through the high-ceilinged room, “we submit the comprehensive neurological evaluation conducted at two-fifteen this morning by Dr. Alan Vance-Morris, Chief of Neurology at the University of Miami, certifying Eleanor Vance to be in the ninety-ninth percentile of cognitive health for her age group.”
Judge Higgins flipped through the pages, her expression hardening with every passing second. Her eyes drifted to Julian, who was cowering behind his public defender, sweating through his shirt.
“Third, Your Honor,” David’s voice grew even colder, “we submit the forensic digital audit of corporate communications from Vance Logistics, proving that Chloe Jenkins, with the knowledge of Harold Jenkins, orchestrated this fraudulent guardianship to liquidate Eleanor Vance’s thirty-five-million-dollar living trust to fund an offshore flight to Panama. We have attached the registered corporate filings of 'CJ Horizon Holdings' in Panama City, which was established exclusively to receive the stolen funds.”
Harold and Beatrice Jenkins, sitting in the front row of the gallery, suddenly scrambled to their feet, attempting to quietly slip out the back doors.
“Bailiff!” Judge Higgins barked, her voice cutting through the room like thunder. “Detain those two individuals immediately!”
Two armed deputies stepped in front of the exit doors, blocking Harold and Beatrice. Harold began to shout, his face purple with rage, but within seconds, both he and Beatrice were handcuffed and pushed into the gallery chairs.
“This court has seen some vile, despicable attempts at elder exploitation in thirty years on the bench,” Judge Higgins said, her voice shaking with righteous fury as she stared down at Chloe. “But the premeditated cruelty demonstrated in these exhibits is sickening. You attempted to weaponize the probate system to bury an innocent woman alive in her own twilight years.”
“Your Honor, please!” Chloe wept, thrashing against her waist chains. “I was doing it for my husband! Julian forced me! Julian was in debt! He told me to find a doctor! It was all Julian’s idea!”
Julian gasped, staring at his wife in pure, unadulterated horror. “Chloe? What are you saying? You set up the Panama account! You told me my mother was too old to care!”
“You spineless coward!” Chloe screamed across the courtroom, her face contorting into pure hatred. “You couldn't run a company if your life depended on it! You lost four million dollars on internet tokens! You’re nothing without your mommy’s money, and now you’ve dragged me down with you!”
“SILENCE!” Judge Higgins slammed her gavel down three times, the wood cracking against the sounding block like gunshots.
The courtroom fell dead silent.
“Regarding the emergency petition for conservatorship,” Judge Higgins announced, her voice icy, “it is dismissed with prejudice. Eleanor Vance is declared fully competent, fully sovereign, and the court issues an immediate, permanent restraining order prohibiting Julian Vance, Chloe Vance, Harold Jenkins, and Beatrice Jenkins from coming within one thousand feet of Eleanor Vance or any property she owns.”
Chloe let out a hopeless wail.
“Regarding the criminal charges against Chloe Vance,” Judge Higgins continued ruthlessly, “in light of the evidence of active flight planning to Panama, she represents an extreme flight risk. Bond is revoked. She will be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections pending trial on felony elder abuse, conspiracy to commit grand theft, and forgery.”
Judge Higgins then turned her blazing gaze upon Julian Vance.

“And as for you, Mr. Julian Vance... based on the evidence of corporate embezzlement and sworn perjury submitted to this court today, I am referring this matter immediately to the State Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division and the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida for the issuance of federal arrest warrants. Bailiff, take Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins into custody for conspiracy under Florida Statute 777.04. Court is adjourned.”
