Chapter 9 - 9:58 PM: The Siege

“NO!” I screamed.
*BANG.*
The shot echoed through the enclosed concrete bay like an artillery strike.
Julianna gasped.
The chrome pistol slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the oil-stained concrete.
She looked down at her own chest. A single red circle bloomed through the delicate lace of her Vera Wang bodice, right above the antique diamond pendant.
Behind her, emerging from the shadows of the secondary utility vehicle with an FBI Glock held in a double-handed combat grip, was a woman in a tactical windbreaker with the letters *SDNY - SPECIAL AGENT* stenciled in gold across her chest.
Agent Miller. Clara’s lead federal partner.
“Target down!” Miller yelled, moving forward with her weapon leveled. “Step away from the vehicle! Federal agents, secure the perimeter!”
Julianna staggered backward two steps, her knees buckling. She collapsed against the side of her father’s wheelchair, her fingers clawing at the leather upholstery before she slid to the floor, her blood pooling around the hem of her destroyed gown.
“Julianna...” Marcus whispered, his face frozen in a paralysis far worse than his medical condition. “Julianna, get up...”
Julianna didn't get up. Her eyes, wide and glassy, stared blankly up at the harsh halogen lights of the ceiling. The great Sterling dynasty’s chosen heir was gone.
“MEDIC!” I roared, dropping to my knees beside Clara. “I NEED A MEDIC HERE RIGHT NOW!”
Two tactical paramedics in gray trauma gear sprinted toward us, dropping their heavy jump-kits beside Clara’s motionless body.
“Bilateral pupil dilation,” the lead medic barked into his headset as he sliced open Clara’s blood-soaked blouse. “BP is 60 over 40 and dropping. Intracranial pressure critical. We need an immediate burr hole or she’s herniating! Get the Lucas device! Prep the oxygen!”
I checked my watch.
The gold hands read 9:58 PM.
Two minutes.
Agent Miller stepped up beside me, her gun still warm, her eyes hard as granite. She looked down at Clara, then reached down and pulled the tiny titanium USB drive from Lily’s trembling fingers.
“Is this the unredacted master file?” Miller asked me.
“Yes,” I choked out, tears finally breaking through my defenses, blinding my vision. “Everything. The 1994 shares. The Dubai shell companies. Marcus Sterling’s real medical records. Everything Clara found.”
Miller pulled a ruggedized military tablet from her tactical vest and slotted the USB drive into the side port.
A digital progress bar flashed on the screen:
**VERIFYING CRYPTOGRAPHIC SIGNATURE... SDNY CLOUD SERVER CONNECTED.**
Marcus Sterling watched from his wheelchair, his chest heaving, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple as his nasal cannula slipped from his nostrils.
“Kane...” Marcus wheezed, blood spitting from his lips. “Kane... stop the upload... the statute... ten o'clock...”
Kane didn't answer.
Kane was already face-down on the concrete, his hands zip-tied behind his back, an FBI agent’s knee buried deep between his shoulder blades.
The tablet screen flashed bright green:
**TIMESTAMP: 9:59:42 PM.**
**AFFIDAVIT VERIFIED AND LODGED WITH THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.**
**EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE EXECUTED.**
**ARREST WARRANTS ACTIVE: STERLING, MARCUS; STERLING, ELEANOR; KANE, GABRIEL.**
The clock on the wall clicked to 10:00 PM.
Marcus Sterling let out a strangled, hollow gasp. His head fell backward against the headrest of his motorized chair. The monitors on his portable medical kit flatlined into a long, continuous, mocking tone.
The patriarch’s heart had given out at the exact second his empire died.
“We’ve got a pulse!” the medic yelled, slamming an epinephrine auto-injector into Clara’s femoral artery. “Pupils responding! She’s breathing on her own! MOVE, MOVE, MOVE! GET HER TO THE TRACTOR RIG!”

They hoisted Clara onto the wheeled stretcher, pumping oxygen into her lungs as they sprinted toward the open ambulance bay.
