Chapter 21 - Isolation Bay B

I climbed down the iron rungs of the upper cellar wall, my boots splashing into three inches of rancid standing water. The air was thick, suffocating.

I approached the open hatch. The edges of the steel plate were shiny, rubbed raw by recent friction. Fresh yellow grease glistened on the hinges.

"Is someone down there?" my voice echoed, unnatural and metallic, bouncing down into the vertical shaft.

Silence answered me.

I clipped the lantern to my chest strap, drew my Glock, and took hold of the climbing rope. My boots slid against cold, slimy bedrock as I lowered myself down into the hidden chamber.

Ten feet. Twenty feet.

My boots touched solid, poured concrete.

I unclipped the lantern and swung the beam in an arc. My breath hitched.

This wasn't an abandoned ruin.

It was a subterranean medical bunker, straight out of a Cold War nightmare. The walls were lined with glazed white subway tile, stained with rust trails. Thick copper conduits ran across the ceiling, humming faintly.

Along the far wall sat an array of humming electrical batteries connected to solar relays on the park's surface. On a stainless steel counter sat unopened bottles of medical-grade saline, boxes of sedatives, and a row of vintage reel-to-reel magnetic tape recorders.

In the center of the room sat a single hospital bed, framed by rusted leather restraints.

Above the bed, pinned to a cork notice board, were dozens of photographs.

I stepped closer, my heart slamming against my ribs like a sledgehammer.

Every single photo was of me.

Me as a toddler on my father’s yacht. Me on my high school graduation day. Me holding baby Noah in the maternity ward. Me kissing Celeste at the wedding that ruined our lives. And photographs of Elena—taken from long-range surveillance lenses over the last eight months.

Beneath the photographs, carved into the stainless steel tray of an operating cart, were words scratched with a scalpel:

*“DAVID GETS THE SUN. EVELYN GETS THE HOLE. BUT EVELYN HAS A SON NOW TOO.”*
