Chapter 8 - The Dominoes Fall

For the next seventy-two hours, the Vault became the operational hub of the largest counter-espionage purge in the history of the United States military.

With General Vance’s terminal unlocked and Harold’s confession corroborated by the digital trail on the recovered drive, the scope of the conspiracy became clear. It wasn't just a rogue logistics scheme; it was an entrenched syndicate of corrupt officers, private military contractors, and compromised defense officials who had turned Fort Bragg’s advanced weapons labs into their personal black-market warehouse.

I didn't sleep. Fueled by black coffee and cold fury, I directed teams of federal agents across the eastern seaboard.

At 0600 on Thursday, the Chief of Staff for the 18th Airborne Corps was arrested in his office, his hands cuffed behind his back in full view of his junior officers.

At 1100, federal agents raided the headquarters of Aegis Vanguard in Northern Virginia, seizing terabytes of classified data and freezing over two hundred million dollars in foreign assets.

At 1600, two defense contractor liaisons were intercepted at Dulles International Airport attempting to board a flight to Dubai.

Every single arrest was signed, authorized, and overseen by the "glorified secretary" from Room 404.

By Friday morning, the purge was complete. Seventeen officers, twelve private contractors, and two high-ranking civilian bureaucrats were in federal custody.

In the corridors of Fort Bragg, rumors spread like wildfire. The officers who had sat in that auditorium—the ones who had laughed when General Vance pushed me into that chair—now walked the halls in terrified silence. Nobody knew who the quiet woman in the administrative office really was. Nobody knew who was next on the list.

Colonel Brody walked into my temporary command post on Friday afternoon, holding an envelope bearing the embossed gold seal of the Pentagon.

"From the Chief of Staff of the Army, Director," Brody said, snapping a crisp, genuine salute.

I took the envelope, broke the wax seal, and read the single page inside.

The President had signed off on the investigation. General Richard Vance and Brigadier General Harold Vance were to be stripped of their ranks, dishonorably discharged, and transferred to the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth to await trial for high treason and espionage under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

And at the bottom of the page was an addendum.

A mandatory all-hands formation had been called at the main auditorium for 1700 hours. Every officer who had been present at Monday’s briefing was required to attend.

"Are you ready for this, Morgan?" Brody asked, a rare, genuine smile playing on his face.

I stood up, adjusting the collar of my uniform. "I've been ready for seven years, Marcus."
